As you are aware I have hated my Intro to Ruby lessons. To the point where I told my GF and friends that I was doubting being enrolled in school. I kept pushing through, and I am happy to say I'm done with Intro - but not looking forward to Procedural or OO Ruby. Have already complained to many people about how I'll be screaming and kicking while doing those sections.
I began HTML & CSS section last week while my GF and I were in a small beach town on Long Island called Montauk. It was a dreary day and I thought I better get to studying. I had no idea if I would like it, and as my previous blog post suggests I didn't know if I was going to hate it as much as Ruby. I began it and I was floored. This makes sense I kept saying in my head. Finally, I was understanding coding. I was impressed by how well I understood what I was learning and how little I needed help vs. Intro to Ruby when I was asking almost everyone for help and needed hand holding. I actually spent that entire day with my laptop, near the pool, in the room, anywhere with wifi doing my school work. On vacation! That's how I knew I loved it.
I tried to explain to my mom why I was loving HTML & CSS in a simple way. For example, when you want to do a paragraph you type in
I'm halfway into HTML & CSS and I could see myself doing this for a living. I got excited and looked up front end web developer jobs and that made me happy. I know I'll have to learn more languages to do front end and keep up with it, but I am ready! I know, I know, I have to finish school before I can and I promise I will!
It seems like there are two groups of people - back end and front end. At the beginning of the course I didn't know if I belonged in either. I now see I belong in front end. I'll laugh if I love Procedural and OO Ruby and want to do both. Mark my word. It might happen as I've heard it makes more sense.
Waking up early every day and spending all my day doing school work and feeling amazed by how well I understand the labs makes me realize that it was all worth it to push through Intro to Ruby! Of course, I struggle and I've found help and looked at other people's labs to see what I am messing up. Also, these labs are so cute and fun! I loved the Kitten Wheelbarrow one, which I did on the train back to NYC from Montauk, I loved it that much. It was so much fun figuring out how to move the kitties to the wheelbarrow. I think that's another reason why I've loved this portion, the labs are engaging and while you can see your TTT Board, I found it more rewarding looking at my Exceptional Realty page than that.
A quick blog post, but wanted to share my excitement for HTML & CSS.
Thanks for reading!
