I'd say the future is safe and solid, if stagnant. PHP is definitely not the first choice of developers these days, and it's hard to ignore the mind share Node has cornered. PHP will definitely remain popular, but mostly due to established systems like WordPress, Magento, etc. This will have a positive side effect of these developers branching out into MVC frameworks, but I doubt new developers will want to take up PHP as a career choice.
That said, as time goes on and good PHP developers become rare (they already are), it'd be a good chance to make good money. 🤯
