I don't think it is as cut and dry as you say. There is a whole spectrum of people with different levels of work ethic and capability. I know people who are driven and work hard, but checkout at 38-40 hours each week and conversely people who spend a bunch of extra hours but don't seem to get as much done.
I guess all I am saying is that people can be well invested into their job without going crazy.
