I have learned to do both.
First, and most important, is to set clear goals. That helps to give a proper focus, reduce cognitive load, and prime the brain for getting into Flow.
On the second part of the question, my life is an entire journey of exploration. Pursuing interests, curiosities, and new discoveries. Even if that gets in conflict with traditional structures and customs.
For me most of my life has been about going trough life one step at a time, and taking opportunities that present themselves to me, while having a picture of what I like and don't like, based on that I was making choices, and it mostly good how things turned out, just maybe I would say that things don't happen as fast as I would like them to.
Lately I started setting goals, bit its not very strict that I hold myself accountable, but for every goal I set a deadline, and I review it each month to see if its reasonable and then adjust if needed. I think that gives me a way to maybe visualize the goals and how and when I would achieve them better.
But would like to know how other people are able to achieve, or what is their take on this.
Usually, I prefer going with the flow and figuring things out as they present, when it comes to work or life both :)
