One of my favorite things for engaging in a new-to-me project is multi-fold:
Find code and refactor it or write a test of uncovered code. This is the small orienting win. Then keep doing that. Maybe patch a bug. Acclimate to the ecosystem and how the small wins can be folded into the main branch; which makes way for larger/grander contributions.
