One of my favorite things for engaging in a new-to-me project is multi-fold:

  1. Review recent git logs and see the recent changes
  2. Look at chunky files (those that are larger than others)
  3. Generate the inline documentation and do a cursory overview
  4. Run the specs and see where code is not covered.

Find code and refactor it or write a test of uncovered code. This is the small orienting win. Then keep doing that. Maybe patch a bug. Acclimate to the ecosystem and how the small wins can be folded into the main branch; which makes way for larger/grander contributions.
