I can't agree more with the post.
Even though I'm not a designer, I had my fare share of things that I needed to implement and a lot of end-user feedback on said designs.
I would say that in general KISS is a sane principle in the design world as well.
What I think is lacking overall in the design world are more articles focused on UX that explain clearly with examples why certain patterns are just confusing for the end user.
To be honest, the new gmail / reddit designs are such examples of much fluff without function.
