I personally try to vary between both, prefer working on a stable table but sometimes, for example when I don't have to write too much (listen or talk), it is more relaxing to work on the sofa. then it really depends on the back pain you have, so on the chair you work on, on how you sit on the sofa...
Maybe while studying on the sofa, but the table is way better when programming.
