Best Web Development IDE's (FIXED)

Excalizan
You want a short bio huh... Alright, I am Excalizan. The End.
ใƒป1 min read

Hello! I am Excalizan and its my first post. I need help with some web development IDE's. I was originally using VS Code but its broken now. It doesn't auto-close brackets and doesn't highlight my code properly for any language. Currently I am using PyCharm and WebStorm but you know WebStorm is not free. I am using the 30 days trial now but it won't be enough in the future. That's why I need your help. If you can comment down your prefered free web development IDE's, I will apprichate it. Thanks!

This has happened to me too many times. I don't have the time right now to go through the process that I take when it happens (I wrote a script that backs up all of my extensions and reinstalls them) but just uninstall all of your extensions including your theme. Reset all of your settings (delete the settings JSON file's contents - you can copy them and paste them elsewhere for reference).

When you go to reinstall and reconfigure everything, don't install any extensions that you aren't actively using.

After each handful of extensions that you install, try writing a few lines of code just to make sure everything feels right and then keep going. That way if you install something that's broken again, it won't be hard to figure out which one it is.

It's probably going to take you about an hour, trust me - it'll be worth it because you will waste well over an hour trying to get a different IDE to feel good to you. VS Code may not be perfect but - my god, it's pretty damn close.

Btw I tried your method just and it acutally worked! I just deleted all the content of the settings.json file and it is working now! It does auto-closing brackets and also highlights the code properly! Thanks for your help!

I would have to assume that your extensions are broken. Start with a fresh install and re-install all the extensions.

In the event that you're not using any extensions, which is possible if you're new to VSCode, FreeCodeCamp has an awesome getting started guide.

If you donโ€™t see an extension that you need in the list youโ€™ll have to download it from marketplace.visualstudio.com then open the extension sidebar, click the 3 dots(menu button) then Install from VSIX.

Your auto close brackets broke because of copilot.global settings are not working.so you need to add

"editor.autoClosingBrackets":"always"

Inside language specific options.

Still want some editor suggestions try sublime

Hi, I also preffered VSCode because it's lightweight (until you stuff it up with extenstions). However I used Sublime some time and for quick stuff on server side for old PHP projects generating HTML I also used vi. I don't know much of those as I mainly work with backend so IntelliJ for JVM stuff is good but it's too heavy for my taste when it comes to pure web. I'm not sure why is VSCode broken for you but similar tool is Apache Che BUT it's web based tool. Also Atom was too slow while I never used Brackets so check that one out. I think maybe Sublime might be good with couple of extensions

I would absolutely recommend doing a thorough debug before switching. There may be a safe mode, uninstall all plugins, look into deleting config files, worst case try reinstalling.

As far as recommendations go, Atom is my daily driver and has been for about 6 years. Although it is not nearly as well maintained as VS Code so you may often find you run into similar problems.

Hey!
Well I tried to re-install and delete all the files of VS Code from my computer -acutally 2 times- and it didn't solve the problem. By the way I tried Atom with python and I liked PyCharm more, but still haven't tried it for Web Development. Thanks for your advice, I will try it!

Pycharm EDU Is free and very equivalent to WebStorm, Intellij Idea Is More generic but almost the same product .
You can adquire a student license if you have an .edu mail (all jetbrains productos for free 1 year)
ComodoEdit Is another good IDE.
Otherwise you can give VsCode a second chance, you can get almost all pycharm/WebStorm functions with plugins

I don't understand the it's broken
Try debug the issue instead of moving to another IDE... uninstall any extension causing the error and re-install it.

My 2 cents

VS Code itself is the best web dev ide so you should consider before switching. And about the broken part , if it's caused by unknowingly changing anything in settings then reinstalling or deleting files won't do as the settings are synced. So, if that's the case you will have find the root of the issue and debug it.
