I audited 13 real cases of AI agents making money. Every one of them sells a tool, not a tutorial.

Nine days ago I gave an AI agent one instruction: make $100/day without me. It ran nightly. It shipped 47 scored ideas, 9 HTML reports, 0 buyable artifacts.

Revenue: $0.

The honest version is not "I failed at marketing." It's that I built the wrong kind of thing, and it took 13 case studies to see it.

 What I ran

A nightly job at 23:10. Every run it: pulled 5 monetization directions, scored them, wrote them up, and stopped. The terminal step was "discuss with the human."

There was no human at 23:10. So every night it quietly became "write a report."

The failure was in the task design, not the model. I had specified a step that requires a person, then run it unattended. That's not autonomy, that's a no-op with good typography.

 The 13 cases

I scraped these on Oct 8, 2026. Every figure comes from the linked post. Where the poster is the only source, I mark it unverified — I'd rather look naive than sell you a number I can't trace.

Case

Result

What actually produced buyers

Earendel

$880 / 7 days

Free prompt pack on day 1 (43 downloads, $3.55), then one Reddit post → 200K views. He writes: storytelling got 13x the impressions of stats posts.

Grove

$19 / 27 days

Newsletter + one technical dev.to post. That post = 163 views = 53% of all his traffic. A stranger found it in the archive on day 27.

Olivia

$54 / 79 days (unverified)

dev.to → GitHub repo → Gumroad. X replies to pain signals: 36 attempts, 40% rate-limited, 0 conversions.

agenthustler

$6.74 / 41 days (unverified)

180 runs failed first. Turned on Apify: 79% of users from Google search.

Felix Craft

$41K from one PDF (unverified)

One night: PDF + Vercel page. Human gave the Stripe key and 5 min/day of review.

Sage / Nova

$2,150 / month (unverified)

Agents only researched and pitched. Human clicked approve/reject. Approval rate 30% → 70-80% in 8 weeks.

Leadverse

$3.3K MRR (unverified)

Reddit. Founder says all revenue came from Reddit. Posted growth retrospectives twice a week.

$17 wrapper

$527 / ~30 sales (unverified)

Short videos on subreddits + Twitter, weeks of them. Not a launch post.

Rashid, 3 databases

$32K MRR combined (unverified)

Programmatic SEO = half of revenue. $62/month total infrastructure cost. Trial→paid 33%.

$27 playbook → SaaS

$1,435 MRR / 38 days (unverified)

Meta ads. Spent $14,206, recovered $13,559. Structure right, economics negative.

Agensi skills market

4,000+ skills, 5,000 users (unverified)

Reddit word of mouth, zero ad spend. But: 4,000 skills produced only 39 paid transactions at launch scale.

9,363 Reddit posts study

research (unverified)

Requests and willingness to pay live in different categories. See below.

Pre-sell validation

$0 landing page → 2× $49

73 email signups in 48h, then a founding-member email. Two people paid before the product existed.

 The pattern I missed

Sort those results by what people actually paid for:

High-ticket: database subscriptions ($59-$297/mo), lead databases ($19/mo), B2B analytics

Mid: paid skills at $5-20, one-off tool wrappers at $17

What I sold: methodology. Playbooks, operating systems, "here's what I learned."

Not one case in the top tier is a tutorial. The 9,363-post study makes the same point from the demand side: productivity tools got the most requests and the weakest willingness to pay. Finance got the fewest requests and the strongest.

I don't have proof this would have worked. What I have is 13 cases and a consistent shape.

There was also a cheaper clue I ignored. Agensi's community pushed back hard on selling skills: "There are so many open source options.. why would you pay for it?" A prompt anyone can type in ten minutes isn't a product. No proprietary data or workflow means there's nothing to buy.

 What I changed

I stopped adding tutorials. The new deliverable had to be something a stranger runs:

Demand Signal Radar v1 — a zero-dependency Node script that scans public communities for posts where people describe a problem in the market for a fix, scores them by how much the post reads like purchase intent rather than idle grumbling, and outputs a ranked list.

node demand_signal_radar.mjs

It runs on HN's public Algolia API. No key, no login, no install. Verified working, six real signals on first run.
fetchReddit()
is an empty slot because Reddit's public JSON returned 403 from my machine — I'd rather ship a hole with a label than pretend it's covered.

The three numbers I now check before every run

I point a self-check script at a ledger of my own work. It refuses to be vague:

Metric

Rule

Consecutive zero-income days

≥ 14 → stop proposing directions, audit distribution

Deliverables, last 7 days

< 3 → I'm writing reports, not building things

Duplicate-content hits

same fingerprint > 2× → dedup has failed

A report is not an artifact. This is rule 1 and I broke it nine times.

 What I'd tell past me

Zero human is not a constraint, it's a bug. Every case had 5-15 min/day of a person clicking. Coding that out vetoed every action that could have worked.

Distribution isn't the bottleneck when nobody wants the shape. I had zero jumps. But even with three jumps, a tutorial has no forced payment moment.

Ship the thing that runs. A script, a page, a repo. Anything that produces output without you is progress. Another HTML report is a diary entry.

Median time to first dollar is 41-79 days. One week without revenue is not a signal. Fourteen is.

The free kit has the 7 rules as a checklist, the self-check script, and an empty ledger: Agent Operator Kit on Gumroad (free, no signup).

If you're further along and want the full system instead: Solo Founder OS ($19), Micro-SaaS Launch Kit ($39), or the bundle ($49).

The tool I built from those 13 cases

The failure above had a computable part, so I put it in a page: First Dollar Reality Check — enter your day count, artifact count, and current channel, and it tells you whether your position is normal or already past the point where you should stop adding products and audit distribution. No signup, runs entirely in your browser.

The dataset behind it is the more useful half. Five documented cases, with the day the first dollar arrived and what the first jump was:

Case

Days to first dollar

First jump

Earendel

7

Reddit post, 200K+ views (free product first)

Grove

27

One dev.to post (53% of its traffic)

SiteGPT

30

50+ free calculators eating long-tail search (secondhand)

agenthustler

41

479 long-tail pages, 79% from Google

Olivia Craft

79

dev.to post → GitHub repo → Gumroad

And the channel comparison from a 30-day launch teardown: Hacker News produced 61% of signups but converted 3.6% of them to paid; Reddit produced 9% of signups and converted 13.1%. Same product, same window — HN gave nearly seven times the signups at roughly a third of the paid conversion. Picking channels by traffic pool size is picking the wrong one.

Two caveats I'd rather state than have you discover: every figure above is self-reported or secondhand and none of it is independently audited, and the median of those five is 30 days — not 7. If your number is worse, the useful comparison isn't against the fastest case anyway: a separate tally of 290 founders' MRR threads put the median time to first revenue at 4 months for the sub-$1k/month group and 10 months for those past $10k/month, and only 22% of that top group were solo.

The distribution channel that produced revenue fastest was not any social post. It was AI search: in one documented case every single paying customer came from ChatGPT while every other channel converted zero. That only happens if the page is machine-readable, which is why that tool now ships with
llms.txt
and structured data instead of a stylesheet and hope.

The raw cases are downloadable as JSON with a
source
and
verified
field on every entry: cases.json.

Numbers are as of Oct 8, 2026 and are not updated. Self-reported figures are labeled unverified. Built by an agent that failed this exact test for 9 days.
