Building a Pet Services Directory: Lessons from Launching PetOS

I recently launched PetOS Directory, a local search platform for pet care services across all 50 US states.

Here are a few things I learned along the way:

 Start with real data

The biggest mistake I see in directory projects is launching with placeholder content. Pet owners searching for a vet or groomer need real addresses, real phone numbers, and real hours. We indexed thousands of businesses before going live.

Build for trust first, features second

People searching for pet care are often anxious. They are choosing someone to care for an animal they love. Every design decision should reduce friction and increase confidence. Clean layouts, verified data, and clear contact info matter more than fancy filters.

 Local SEO compounds over time

A directory lives and dies by local search. Getting city and category pages indexed takes time on a new domain, but the payoff is compounding. Each indexed page is a potential entry point.

The stack matters less than the data

We use Next.js and Vercel. Works great. But the real moat is data quality and coverage, not the tech choices.

Check it out at petosdirectory.com and let me know what you think.
