In this article, we will walk you through some speed tests we conducted to determine if Shopify works in China or not. Our staff conducted the tests in Shanghai (China Mainland) and Hong Kong (outside Mainland China) and we used 3rd party testing tools to ensure our tests weren’t biased.

What is Shopify?

Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce store creation platform. Individuals without a technical background can easily create e-commerce websites through the visual interface provided by Shopify. In addition, Shopify also provides a rich rental library for store owners to use to make their Shopify store better. For example, make it support multi-language, multi-currency support.

How Fast is Shopify in China?

We picked 10 different high-traffic stores for this case study.
Below are the speed tests results:

Case 1: Fashion Accessories Company: Steve Madden

Website: www.stevemadden.com
Global ranking Worldwide: 20,446
Estimated traffic per month: 2.9 Million

If you visit Steve Madden’s website outside of China, you may not notice slow access or even opening issues, because Shopify’s access speed outside China is generally great. However, in China, it is impossible to open the site.

We can look at the following screen record our team put together.
When recorded this screen record, it's under the normal 4G network speed and is in the center of Shanghai, China, here is what we see on Steve Madden:

As a result, we waited over 60 seconds on this blank screen, and Steve Madden's website wasn't loading at all in Shanghai. If it's not for this experiment, I would just exit the site in a few seconds without seeing things on the screen.

Is it just people in Shanghai that can't open Steve Madden's website?

We did another test to check the access speed of all the provinces to Steve Madden's website. Here is the result:

The color represents the speed at which users open the website. The green areas represent the faster the user can open the website. Yellow to dark red show areas that take a long time for users to open.

The test results show that people from China (not just Shanghai) cannot visit Steve Madden's store. Even first and second-tier major cities in China cannot open Steve Madden's website.

To wrap up, as you can see the speed tests above, if people in China can’t open these high-traffic Shopify sites, we can probably conclude that other websites powered by Shopify are likely not openable in China unless you configure custom CDNs for China or use an acceleration service like what we discuss in this article

Does Vimeo Work in China?

Many of our clients that create and publish video content have been asking us the following question:

Does Vimeo work in China?

The short answer is NO. Vimeo is completely blocked in China. This means any content that is hosted or streamed on Vimeo, regardless of its content, both embedded or via a direct link, both Vimeo videos and Vimeo live streaming, is unable to be delivered to visitors in China.

For those who are not familiar, Vimeo is an ad-free video streaming and live streaming platform. It is also the first video-sharing platform to offer high-definition video. After Vimeo went live in 2004, it was blocked by China in October 2009.

Not just Vimeo, the majority of video platforms including YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook are banned too so aren't able to stream content to Chinese audiences from within mainland China.

Why is Vimeo blocked in China?

The main reason is due to content restrictions. You should have heard of the Great Firewall, which is controlled by the Chinese government's censorship system so that people in China can only stream approved content. All external video content platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and Vimeo are blocked in China because their content is user-generated.

The regulations with live streaming are even more stringent in China, for example, foreign users inside China are simply blocked from live streaming completely. So Vimeo live streaming is blocked in China as well.

Additionally, any website legally operated in China need to have an ICP license—which is short for an "Internet Content Provider" license — a special permit issued by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Only websites with an ICP license can legally operate in China and can be accessed by Chinese visitors. This ensures that the website content complies with China's strict rules.

Websites like Vimeo do not have a business presence in mainland China, thus it does not have an ICP license to legally operate in China.

How to Make Vimeo Work in China?

In conclusion, Vimeo is blocked in China.

What is Firebase?

Cloud Firestore: Build serverless, secure apps at global scale. Store app data in the cloud, sync data across online and offline devices, and retrieve it with expressive queries.
Firebase Hosting: Deploy fast-loading, secure websites that are backed by a global CDN without all of the hassle. 
Realtime Database: Build serverless apps by storing and syncing JSON data between your users in near-realtime, on or offline, with strong user-based security.

Does Firebase work in China?

The short answer is no.

According to Google Beijing, Firebase is blocked and can’t be accessed in China along with other Google services.

Don’t just take our word. Lets take a look at a few test to see how Firebase core services work in China.

Does Firebase Realtime Database work in China?

We used the ping command (-c) to test if the database is accessible (ping-able) from our servers in Shanghai and US.

First, to show you what a working Firebase ping test looks like, we ran one in the United States.

As expected, "0% packet loss", Firebase works in the U.S.

Now, lets look at 🇨🇳 China 🇨🇳.

This time the ping test show's "100% packet loss". Meaning that Firebase Realtime database is NOT accessible in mainland China.

Does Firebase Hosting work in China?

Using a third-party speed testing tool, we ran a China speed test on a small media asset hosted on Firebase to see how it would load across China.

How to make Firebase work in China?

At the beginning of this article, we promised to provide you with a solution to make Firebase work in China. Now lets run some tests and provide proof that our Yammo acceleration technology can deliver what we promise.

We ran a China speed test on a Firebase Database. The results below show us that the Firebase database was difficult to access across most of China.

How to Make Your E-Commerce Site Compliant with China's GDPR

On November 1, 2021, the Cybersecurity Administration of China (CAC) implemented the Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL).

Similar to the European Union's GDPR, the PIPL's Article 1 describes its purpose to:

"...protect personal information rights and interests, standardize personal information handling activities, and **promote the rational use of personal information."

What if My E-commerce site is out of Compliance with China's GDPR?

Since implementing the PIPL, 21YunBox has received several inquiries from international e-commerce agencies looking to help keep their clients compliant with the new law. We keep hearing consistent questions regarding PIPL's Chapter III compliance, which requires personal data to be localized in mainland China.

On the surface, localization of sensitive data on servers in mainland China may seem simple. However, many international businesses operating an e-commerce store in China find it challenging to stay compliant due to their favorite e-commerce platform's architecture.

For example, several of the popular platforms (ie. Salesforce Commerce, Shopify, etc) don't work out-of-the-box in China. To validate this, we ran hundreds of case studies on international companies using these platforms in China. The results showed that they don't work in China because they utilize servers outside of mainland China to host their platforms and store the backend data.

How to make your E-commerce site Compliant with China's GDPR?

If you find your company in the situation described above, let's look at a few of the options to get your e-commerce site working compliantly in China.

Option 1: Migrate to a New E-commerce Platform

Sure, migrating to a new platform might be a viable option.

If you have ever set up an e-commerce store, you may know the level of effort and overhead required. If not, you can expect to pay at least $100k+ just to set up the new storefront. And for a site customized for China, plan to pay a premium.

In addition to the upfront capital costs, you should budget for the overhead to fully retrain your staff, which can be painful and take years.

Option 2: Utilize Near China Servers to host your Platform

In the early days of the ICP licenses, people were looking for ways to avoid the new law. You may have received recommendations from "experts" or read articles online saying that you should host your site on "near China servers", in places like Hong Kong or Singapore to avoid the ICP.

Avoiding regulations might be okay for small businesses and personal projects, but if you are operating a legitimate business, breaking the laws brings a risk that most reputable companies are NOT willing to accept.

The risk of being out of compliance with the ICP, can permanently get your site blocked in China. The risk for being non-compliant with the PIPL caries an even stiffer penalty.

A breach of the PIPL would put a company at risk of losing its business license and significant financial penalties of up to 50 million RMB or 5% of its yearly turnover. So if you are working for a legitimate business, your shareholders may not be willing to accept this risk.

Option 3: Fill Out Some Paperwork and Continue using your Favorite Platform

If you are operating a legitimate business in China and have an ICP, China will work with you to succeed.

Remember, the PIPL's Article 1 says that the Chinese government actively promotes the rational use of personal information. CAC had the foresight and knew that many international businesses operating in China would need an option to move data across borders, legally.

To provide businesses like yours the ability to succeed in China, the Chapter III of the PIPL gives you a compliant avenue to move personal data out of mainland China.

If you want to ensure your e-commerce platform and architecture are compliant, the security assessment mentioned above provides you with a clean and legal avenue.

You can think of a security assessment, like getting a business or ICP license. If you are operating an honest business and the data is for legitimate business purposes, the security assessment should be straightforward.

Once approved, you will have the ability to legally transfer business-critical information to your favorite e-commerce platform’s backend services located outside of mainland China.

We recommend this option because it provides your business with the least invasive way to ensure compliance with the PIPL. Yes, it may take some effort up front to get the paperwork approved. Still, it avoids the pain and cost of platform migration and sets up your business to operate legally in China for the foreseeable future.
