Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass

NatureLens — An AI Companion for the Outdoors

I wanted to build something where AI doesn't ask people to spend more time looking at a screen.

We already use our phones for almost everything. Even when we go for a walk, hiking, or simply sit in a garden, it is easy to end up looking at the phone instead of looking around us.

So I thought: what if AI could do the opposite?

That idea led me to NatureLens.

NatureLens is a simple AI tool that helps people understand what they see outdoors. For the first version, I focused on something simple and practical: identifying birds from photos.

Imagine you're walking through a park and see a bird you've never seen before. You take a photo with NatureLens, and the local AI analyzes it and tells you what it might be, along with a few useful facts.

For example:

This looks like an Indian Roller.
Now look around and see if you can spot it.

And that's where I want the interaction to end.

I don't want the user to keep scrolling through an AI-generated page.

Get the information. Put the phone down. And Just Look at the bird.

 Why offline?

While thinking about the project, one thing felt important to me: nature doesn't always have an internet connection.

You might be on a hiking trail, in a forest, in a village, or simply somewhere with poor network coverage.

So instead of building another application that sends everything to a cloud AI service, I wanted the AI to be able to come with you.

The first version uses an open-weight AI model that runs locally. This means the basic identification can happen on the device without depending on an internet connection.

That also means the user's photo doesn't have to leave the device just to get an answer.

Who is it for?

I built the idea for anyone who is curious about the world around them:

Someone who notices a bird during their morning walk.

A family exploring a park with their children.

Someone hiking without a reliable network.

A student trying to learn about nature.

Or simply someone who sees something interesting and wants to know, "What is that?"

Where I want to take it?

Bird identification is only the beginning.

The same idea could eventually help identify plants, insects, trees, and other things people encounter outdoors.

But I don't want to turn it into an application full of features just for the sake of having features.

The basic principle should stay the same:

AI should help us understand the world around us, not replace the experience of being in it.

That's what I wanted to explore with NatureLens.

Just Using AI for a moment. Then put the phone away and go touch grass.

It was my first time to contribute the projects. Got a good experience from hacktoberfest2023. Thank you for providing the opportunity. And also thanks for planted a tree for me with tree-nation.
