      <title>26% of my Claude Code tokens came from subagents I never looked at</title>

&lt;p&gt;I run Claude Code with a pile of custom subagents. I had no idea what any of them cost me, because the number you get shown is one number.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So I counted every assistant record on this machine: &lt;strong&gt;63,749 API calls, 17,054,267,530 tokens.&lt;/strong&gt; The split:&lt;/p&gt;

  Three things I did not expect
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;1. Delegation is not free, it is relocation.&lt;/strong&gt; I reach for &lt;code&gt;general-purpose&lt;/code&gt; to keep the main context clean. That habit is 14.6% of my entire token footprint. The context stays clean; the bill does not care.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;2. One custom agent ate more than all my other custom agents combined.&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;code&gt;zip-lander&lt;/code&gt; is a project-specific agent I wrote for exactly one workflow. 1.83B tokens. &lt;code&gt;spec-planner&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;ui-scan&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;cash-scout&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;cash-checker&lt;/code&gt; and the rest add up to about 7% of that. I would never have guessed the ratio, and I wrote all of them.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;3. 97.7% of every token is a cache read&lt;/strong&gt; — 16.66B out of 17.05B. If your mental cost model is "input + output", it is wrong by roughly an order of magnitude in &lt;em&gt;volume&lt;/em&gt;, and wrong in the other direction on &lt;em&gt;price&lt;/em&gt;, because cache reads are the cheap ones. Either way you are not modelling what is happening.&lt;/p&gt;

  Where the data actually is
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;code&gt;~/.claude/projects/&amp;lt;project-slug&amp;gt;/&amp;lt;session-id&amp;gt;.jsonl&lt;/code&gt;. One JSON object per line. Assistant records carry &lt;code&gt;message.usage&lt;/code&gt;. Two fields do the work:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;strong&gt;&lt;code&gt;isSidechain: true&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; — this record was produced inside a subagent, not the main loop.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;&lt;code&gt;attributionAgent&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; — the &lt;em&gt;type&lt;/em&gt; of that subagent (&lt;code&gt;general-purpose&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;Explore&lt;/code&gt;, or whatever you named your own in &lt;code&gt;.claude/agents/&lt;/code&gt;).&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Group on &lt;code&gt;attributionAgent&lt;/code&gt;, not on &lt;code&gt;agentId&lt;/code&gt;. &lt;code&gt;agentId&lt;/code&gt; is unique per invocation, so grouping on it gives you thousands of rows of one call each.&lt;/p&gt;

  The gotcha that made my first pass ~30% too high
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Resumed and forked sessions replay earlier lines verbatim into a new file.&lt;/strong&gt; The same API response legitimately appears in two or three &lt;code&gt;.jsonl&lt;/code&gt; files. Sum naively and you bill yourself several times for the same call.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Dedup on &lt;code&gt;message.id&lt;/code&gt; before you add anything up. It is stable per API response. &lt;code&gt;requestId&lt;/code&gt; and &lt;code&gt;uuid&lt;/code&gt; are weaker fallbacks for old records.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Two smaller ones, since I hit both:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;

&lt;code&gt;model&lt;/code&gt; values starting with &lt;code&gt;&amp;lt;&lt;/code&gt; (e.g. &lt;code&gt;&amp;lt;synthetic&amp;gt;&lt;/code&gt;) are locally generated, never billed. Drop them.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Newer records nest cache writes under &lt;code&gt;usage.cache_creation&lt;/code&gt; as a dict split by TTL (&lt;code&gt;ephemeral_5m_input_tokens&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;ephemeral_1h_input_tokens&lt;/code&gt;); older ones use the flat &lt;code&gt;cache_creation_input_tokens&lt;/code&gt;. Handle both or you silently lose the 1h writes.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
