How to Start a WooCommerce Store in 2026: Hosting, Costs, and Mistakes to Avoid

WooCommerce itself is free. Hosting is not — and for a store, hosting is the decision that quietly controls speed, uptime, and how much time you spend fixing things instead of selling.

This is the companion to my earlier platform comparison (Shopify vs WooCommerce vs Wix). If you already decided on WooCommerce, this is the next decision: where to run it.

What actually matters for store hosting

Performance: Time to first byte and caching matter more than headline specs. A slow store loses checkouts.

Support quality: When checkout breaks at midnight, support response time is the product.

Backups and staging: One-click backups and a staging site turn a bad update into a five-minute rollback instead of a lost weekend.

Scalability: Traffic spikes from a post or a sale should not take the store down.

Total cost: Intro pricing is not the price. Check renewal pricing, and what costs extra: email, CDN, backups, malware cleanup.

 Option A: Managed WooCommerce hosting

Managed hosting means the host handles updates, caching, security patching, and usually staging and backups. You pay more, you touch servers less.

Two managed options worth comparing for WooCommerce stores:

Cloudways — managed cloud hosting where you pick the underlying cloud provider and Cloudways manages the stack. Good fit if you want control without becoming a sysadmin.

Kinsta — premium managed WordPress/WooCommerce hosting, known for performance tooling and support. Good fit if you want the most hands-off option and your budget allows it.

Compare them on: renewal price (not just intro price), included backups and staging, support hours, and whether email hosting is included or separate.

 Option B: Unmanaged cloud VPS

A raw VPS is cheaper on paper and fully yours — and fully your job. Updates, firewall, backups, and outages are on you. It fits developers and tinkerers. It does not fit someone whose main job is selling products.

If you go this route, budget time, not just money: setup, hardening, monitoring, and a tested restore procedure.

 Cost reality, honestly

Shared hosting looks cheapest until a traffic spike or a neighbor's problem becomes your problem.

Managed hosting looks expensive until you price your own time spent on maintenance.

Always check: renewal price after the first term, backup retention, staging availability, and migration help. These four items cause most regret.

Setup checklist (before your first real order)

Domain + SSL working, forced HTTPS.

Automated daily backups, and one tested restore.

Staging site for plugin/theme updates.

Caching configured, then speed-test a product page and the checkout page.

Payment gateway in test mode, then one real test order, then refund it.

Contact/returns/shipping pages live before you announce the store.

 Mistakes to avoid

Picking the cheapest shared plan for a store that needs to check out reliably.

No staging site: testing updates on the live store.

No tested backups: discovering restore is broken during an incident.

Ignoring renewal pricing and add-on costs.

Launching without a test order.

 FAQ

WooCommerce or Shopify?
See my earlier comparison of Shopify vs WooCommerce vs Wix — WooCommerce wins on control and cost flexibility, Shopify wins on hands-off simplicity. Hosting is the price of WooCommerce's control.

Can I start cheap and migrate later?
Yes, but budget a migration weekend and test checkout after moving. Starting on a plan you will outgrow in a month is fine; starting on one that cannot handle checkout is not.
