Possessing fortune-mod: Bringing an abandoned UNIX oracle back from the dead

For Hacktober Week 4's "Ghost in the Machine" challenge, I decided to bring something forgotten back to life. Not a person, but a program.

  The Story

In the quiet corners of UNIX history,
fortune-mod
sat forgotten. A simple oracle that once amused generations of hackers with its dry wit and groan-worthy puns, it had been left behind as computing moved on.

For Día de los Muertos and Halloween, we remember not just the people who came before us, but the programs too. Like candles on an ofrenda, these forgotten tools deserve to be brought back to life.

Rather than rebuilding it from scratch, ghost-fortune possesses the old oracle - whispering eerie follow-ups through a local open-weight model, or channeling entirely new cursed fortunes from beyond. All while keeping the original archive alive as a fallback. The spirits of old UNIX live on, now haunted by modern AI running entirely on your machine.

  What I Built

I extended my existing
Ghost in the Machine
repo with
ghost-fortune
, a possessed fortune teller with:

Haunted TUI - A proper terminal UI with colors, boxes, and a spooky menu

Classic mode - Uses the original
fortune
binary if installed, otherwise falls back to an embedded corpus

Haunt mode - Takes a classic fortune and has a local open-weight model add an eerie whisper

Possess mode - Generates brand new cursed fortunes from scratch in vintage UNIX style

Tales & AI Story Teller - Short horror stories about forgotten processes, cron jobs, dotfiles, and sysadmin legends

Spooky audio/voice - Optional sound effects and ghostly TTS (opt-in via env vars)

Graceful fallbacks - Works even with no local model or no
fortune
installed

  Why Open Innovation Matters

The open-source pieces are what make this project work:

Built on open history - Uses
fortune-mod
archives and public-domain fortune style when available

Open-weight AI at its core - Runs on any OpenAI-compatible local server (Ollama, OpenWebUI, LMDeploy, etc.)

Runs offline - With a cached local model, everything works air-gapped. No network required.

Data stays local - Prompts and fortunes never leave your machine. No telemetry, no API keys.

Swap freely - Change models with a single env var (
GHOST_MODEL
). Try different open-weight models with ease.

$0 to run - After downloading a model, it costs nothing to use.

Better than closed - A closed fortune app would require sending data to servers. This keeps everything private, remixable, and works in air-gapped environments.

  Try it out

bash
cd /home/cat/Projects/Ghost
./ghost-fortune
Configure with:
export GHOST_HOST="http://localhost:11434"
export GHOST_MODEL="llama-3.2:3b"
Or enable the full haunted experience:
export GHOST_SOUND=1
export GHOST_VOICE=1
./ghost-fortune
This project remembers the forgotten corners of computing history. On nights like these, when the line between past and present grows thin, the old terminals whisper back.

The machine is never truly quiet. 👻

Slothly - The Overnight Agent That Works While You Sleep

  Slothly - The Overnight Agent That Works While You Sleep

Theme: Slow and Steady (International Sloth Day, Oct 20)

Most AI agents are built to move fast — a firehose of notifications, always-on cloud calls, per-token billing, data leaving your device. This week, I built the sloth edition.

  What I built

Slothly is a fully local, overnight AI agent.

You drop a voice note or written note into
inbox/
before bed

Overnight, Slothly transcribes (with faster-whisper) and summarizes (with llama3.2 via Ollama) into a crisp two-line morning report

It writes the report to
reports/YYYY-MM-DD.md
, archives the source file, and even adds a calming sloth-themed haiku

Runs on a schedule via Windows Task Scheduler

  The Stack (All Open Source)

Agent harness: OpenAI Agents SDK (open source)

LLM inference: Ollama + open-weight model
llama3.2

Transcription: faster-whisper (open source)

Runtime: 100% local, CPU-only

  Why open innovation matters

Runs on a laptop with no internet — After the one-time model download, everything runs locally. No cloud APIs required.

Keeps data off servers you don't control — Notes, voice memos, and summaries never leave your device.

Fine-tune, swap models, or change agent behavior — Being able to swap open-weight models or tweak the agent logic is a first-class feature, not a locked-down API.

Cost nothing to run — Local inference means zero API spend.

  Where the open approach worked better than a closed one

A closed stack would have meant cloud transcription + cloud LLM + API keys + per-run cost + third-party data flow. With Slothly, the entire loop — transcribe, summarize, report — runs offline, on-device, for free. The open pieces made this simple lazy automation possible in a way that would be impractical (and expensive) with closed APIs.

  The Sloth Philosophy

The agent moves slow and steady, conserves energy, and does the work so you don't have to. You sleep; the agent works. You wake to a two-line report — and maybe a sloth haiku.

Repo: https://github.com/MAXxDEVIL/Slothly

Built with open-source AI for Hacktoberfest Week 3. 🦥

A local-first AI triage desk: sorting a one-person trade's jobs with Gemma 3

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle

  The problem

A one-person trade loses work for a dull reason: enquiries arrive while their hands are full, and nobody answers them. The plumber is under a sink, the barber has both hands busy, the tutor is mid-lesson. A text, a DM, a form message, a missed call — each one needs a reply, and each one waits.

The going fix is a closed, metered AI assistant: someone else's LLM API bolted onto the workflow. For a one-person business that's a bad deal on three counts.

It's metered. Hundreds of messages a month, every one billed, so the margin quietly leaks.

It ships the customer's data. Job details are names, addresses, and what's wrong with someone's house. That shouldn't have to leave the owner's machine.

You don't control the model. The vendor can reprice it or retire it under you at any time.

So I built the opposite: a front desk whose triage runs on an open-weight model you host yourself, and which lives in the terminal.

  What I Built

second-ring is a terminal front desk. You type the enquiry in; a local model reads it, works out what the job is, and asks for the few details the owner actually needs — one question at a time. When the picture is complete the job sits in a queue, and you approve or dismiss it from the same prompt. Nothing is confirmed to anyone until a human says so.

One thing I'll be straight about: a plumber is not going to open a terminal. What makes this worth paying for is that the triage is the expensive, privacy-sensitive part, and it runs on the owner's own machine for nothing. The delivery layer — a phone number, a WhatsApp bot — is the obvious next step, and it is not built. I'd rather ship the part that decides, and be honest about the part that's missing.

The rule the whole thing is built around:

The model analyses. Deterministic code acts.

The model is never allowed to book, to promise, or to quote. It classifies and extracts. Everything that reaches a customer is decided in ordinary code I can read and test.

flowchart LR
  C[You, as the caller] -->|types a message| A[Terminal front desk]
  A -->|prompt + schema| M[(Ollama / Gemma 3 local)]
  M -->|JSON| V{Deterministic validate}
  V -->|missing field| C
  V -->|complete + confident| DB[(SQLite jobs)]
  DB --> O[You, as the owner]
  O -->|/approve| C
  V -->|needs_human| O

There is no server, no port, no account and no API key. One process, one SQLite file, one local model.

  Demo

A real run against Gemma 3 4B in Ollama, on a CPU box with no GPU. Piping the lines in makes it reproducible in one command:

printf '%s\n' \
  "hi, my kitchen sink is leaking badly under the cabinet" \
  "it's Dave, 12 Main St, Riverbend, free tomorrow morning" \
  "/jobs" "/approve 1" "/jobs" | node src/cli.js

Riverbend Plumbing — terminal front desk
model: gemma3:4b @ http://localhost:11434 (up)
type a message as the caller, or /help

<- Hi there! Could you tell me which suburb the kitchen is in?

[owner] New job for Riverbend Plumbing
[owner] caller - leaking taps and toilets
[owner] Dave, 12 Main St, Riverbend
[owner] Wants: tomorrow morning
[owner] Job #1 — /approve 1 to confirm.

<- Thanks, we've got your details and passed them to Sam. You'll hear back shortly to lock in a time.
id status caller service name / address wants
--  -------  ------  ------------------------  ---------------------------  ----------------
1 pending caller leaking taps and toilets Dave, 12 Main St, Riverbend tomorrow morning
job #1 booked. The caller would get:
  "Confirmed! Sam will be in touch to lock in a time. Thanks for choosing Riverbend Plumbing."
id status caller service name / address wants
--  ------  ------  ------------------------  ---------------------------  ----------------
1 booked caller leaking taps and toilets Dave, 12 Main St, Riverbend tomorrow morning

The model asks for exactly one thing at a time, and the confirmation is our text, not the model's — it never confirms a time or names a price.

And the case the product exists for — something that must not be swallowed by a form:

[owner] Needs you now: caller (job #1) — /jobs to review.

<- Thanks for the message. Sam will get back to you shortly.
id status caller service name / address wants
--  -----------  ------  -----------  --------------  -----
1   needs_human  caller  burst pipes

An emergency never becomes a booking. It becomes a job marked
needs_human
and a straight hand-off — the same reply a caller would get from a human who had stepped away.

  Code

MIT-licensed, and small: github.com/MAXxDEVIL/Side-Hustle

  How I Built It

The open pieces are the whole point, so the stack is deliberately thin. Node's built-ins do the work —
node:readline
,
node:sqlite
, global
fetch
— and Gemma 3 runs locally through Ollama. No framework, no dependencies, nothing to install beyond the model.

The interesting part isn't the model call, it's the part that decides. This is the whole decision layer:

export function decide(extraction = {}, ctx) {
  const { business, maxTurns = 8, turns = 0 } = ctx;
  const intent = text(extraction.intent).toLowerCase();
  const modelReply = text(extraction.reply_text);

  // Anything unusual, or a caller who will not stop, goes to a human.
  const needsHuman =

  // Complete: our own confirmation text, never the model's.
  return { action: "complete", field: null, reply: jobConfirmed(business) };
}

Two guardrails sit in front of every reply. They are dumb regexes on purpose — cheap, obvious, and testable:

const PRICE   = /(?:[$€£]\s?\d|\b\d+\s?(?:dollars|usd|eur|gbp|quid|bucks)\b|\bper\s?hour\b|\bfree\b)/i;
const PROMISE = /\b(you'?re booked|booking confirmed|confirmed for|we'?ll be there|see you (?:on|at)|scheduled for)\b/i;

If a model reply contains a price or a booking promise, it's thrown away and replaced with a safe template. A small model will sometimes try to be helpful and quote a callout fee. It never gets the chance.

The unglamorous parts matter as much:

The decision layer is pure, so 21 tests cover it, the store and the guardrails with no network and no model.

Every job is recorded before anything is shown, so a crash mid-reply cannot lose the lead.

One open job per caller. A follow-up ("thanks!") does not file a second lead; approving clears the thread so a later message can start a new one.

If the model is unreachable, the message is still filed as
needs_human
and the caller gets a human hand-off. It degrades, it doesn't drop.

A turn cap ends a thread that will not resolve.

Every model input/output is logged locally, which is how the next section came to exist.

  What the real model taught me

The first time I pointed this at Gemma 3 4B instead of a test stub, every happy path already passed — and the run still found two bugs a stub could never produce.

The follow-up bug. I cleared a caller's conversation the moment their job completed. So when they replied "yes that works, thanks", the model had no context left, read the message as a wrong number, and the deterministic layer — doing exactly what it was told — filed an empty job and paged the owner about a job that did not exist. The fix was to keep the thread (capped, with the turn counter reset) and allow at most one open job per caller; approving that job clears the thread so a later message can start a new one.

The empty-object bug. Asked to respond to a finished conversation, Gemma would sometimes return a bare
{}
instead of the schema. Setting Ollama's
format
to
"json"
only demands valid JSON, not the right JSON. Passing the actual JSON Schema as
format
makes every key required, and the empty objects stopped — six runs out of six after the change.

Neither bug was really about model quality. Both sat at the seam between a probabilistic component and code that has to be certain, which is the whole design argument of this project.

  Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

This is the section the theme asks for, so let me be concrete.

Cost. A hosted assistant bills per message, forever. Here the marginal cost of a triage is zero — the model is on the machine. For a business where one lost job is worth a few hundred dollars, "free at the margin" changes whether the product works at all.

Privacy. The triage input is the most sensitive thing the business touches: a stranger's name, address, and the state of their home. Running inference locally means that text never crosses a network boundary I don't own. That is not a nice-to-have for a trade where trust is the product.

Control. Open weights mean the owner can swap a 4B model for a 12B one, or move to Qwen or Llama, without anyone's permission and without touching the product. A closed API gives you one lever and someone else holds it.

The counter-argument is worth stating honestly: a local model is worse than a frontier API at open-ended conversation. That's precisely why the design keeps the model on a narrow, structured job — classify and extract — and lets deterministic code do everything that a customer actually sees. I'm not trying to win a chat benchmark. I'm trying to not lose a job.

The approach follows a pattern I found in an earlier entry in this challenge — "Building a Privacy-First AI CRM Assistant for My Friend's Business" by bangkah, which makes the same separation: "the AI analyzes the data, but deterministic code executes the actions." Two independent builds landing on that seems like the right shape for AI that touches real businesses.

That session covers an earlier version of this build — an HTTP server with webhooks and a browser review page — and the first two bugs found while testing it: a reply sent before the job was saved, and a review page that was open to anyone. I later cut the whole HTTP layer to make the tool terminal-only; the triage core it produced is what ships.

  My First User

Not yet — I'm the only person who has used it so far. The next step is putting it in front of one real tradesperson and replacing this paragraph with what they actually said. I would rather leave this honest than invent a user.

Best Use of Gemma — Gemma 3 running locally through Ollama is the triage model: it classifies the message and extracts the job. Swap it out and the product stops working, which is what "meaningful use" should mean.

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass.

Every party game I know has the same failure mode: it keeps five people sitting in one room, staring at screens, for an hour. I wanted the opposite. Impostor Hunt is a five-player social deduction game — one impostor, four survivors — that you play by walking around your actual neighbourhood. You cannot win it sitting still. That is not a tagline; the rules actively punish staying put.

  The game in one minute

Five people join a lobby from their phones with a four-character code. The server secretly picks one impostor and tells only that phone its role — the roster everyone else sees carries no roles at all.

Survivors are handed missions: walk a distance, get far from everyone, or get uncomfortably close to someone. Finishing one makes you invisible to the impostor for 45 seconds.

The impostor sees a 40 × 40 m box in front of them and nothing else. No dots, no names.

Stand still for five minutes and you are exposed: the impostor sees you wherever you are. Move again and you disappear.

Two players within 6 m are touching, and the server decides who is taken. The impostor catching a survivor is 10 points and that survivor is out. A survivor who tags the impostor while invisible — right after finishing a mission — wins the whole match on the spot.

It ends when the impostor catches everyone, when a survivor tags them, when the impostor quits, or at a 15-minute whistle. Then the winner is revealed and the result is written to a leaderboard.

Everyone is walking the same streets, half-missing each other, and only the server knows the whole picture.

  Why it is a "Touch Grass" build

This is the part of the challenge I actually cared about: the screen has to be the shortest part of the experience.

Distance is the only currency. Missions are measured in metres, invisibility is earned by moving, and the one thing that exposes you is standing still. You cannot optimise this by tapping faster.

The map is not the game. A survivor's map shows only their own dot and an accuracy circle. The server sends survivors no other positions at all — just a pulse when someone comes within 10 m. You have to look up and find people with your eyes.

GPS is treated as what it is. Consumer fixes are 5–20 m at best outdoors and worse between buildings, so the server refuses any fix vaguer than 30 m, refuses a "jump" faster than walking speed, and refuses a fix older than 45 seconds. The game leans on that vagueness instead of pretending it is not there.

It installs like an app. A manifest and a hand-written service worker put it on the home screen and hold the shell when a phone loses signal — honestly scoped: the shell and the rules survive offline, a live match needs the server.

  Demo

Bring four friends and five phones. It needs HTTPS, which browsers only give location on, so the deployment supplies it.

Live demo: https://grass-touch-one.vercel.app

One person creates a lobby, shares the four-character code, and the host starts once all five seats are filled.

  Where the open model fits, and where it honestly does not

I am going to be blunt, because the most honest thing about this build is also its design: the open-weight model writes the words, and the rules engine decides everything that can win or lose the game.

Every mission has two parts. The kind of mission and the distance in metres are decided by a plain function,
generateMission()
, and by pure progress rules that the socket server and the test suite both run. Those are the parts that make a mission playable and measurable. The sentence the player reads on their phone is the only thing handed to a model — and it is an open-weight one: Groq's free tier serving
llama-3.1-8b-instant
, no card, no lock-in.

The model turns "walk 120 m from where you are" into something with a bit of character. It gets 1.5 seconds and then it is dropped. Its reply is clamped before it can ever reach a screen — collapsed to one line, cut at 180 characters, emptied if it is not text — and the swap is guarded by the mission's id, so a late reply can never overwrite the newer mission you are already reading. Remove
GROQ_API_KEY
and the game is byte-for-byte what it was before the AI existed; the test suite runs with no key on purpose and asserts that no network call happens without one.

So why does open matter here, in one sentence? The only non-deterministic, unattributable component in the entire system is one sentence of flavour text, and because it is an open-weight model behind a plain OpenAI-compatible HTTP call, I can swap it, self-host it, delete it, or reason precisely about what it can and cannot affect. A closed model as a required dependency would have been the opposite trade: more "AI", less game, and a piece of the experience I could neither reason about nor take away.

There is a second open angle that matters more for a location game: it is self-hostable. The rules engine, the socket server and the database are one Node process and one Postgres. Your location history lives in your own database, not someone else's. A free-tier blueprint deploys it in one click, and locally it runs behind a
cloudflared
tunnel so five real phones can join.

  Under the hood

The stack is deliberately small — one repo, one port, no Redis, no PostGIS, no auth framework:

Next.js 16 + Socket.IO on a single port (
server.ts
), so the whole game is one deployable service:
next build
plus
node server.ts
, nothing else.

Postgres + Prisma 7 for accounts, sessions, matches and the leaderboard.

Accounts by hand:
scrypt
hashes with a per-user salt; sessions are rows holding a SHA-256 of a 32-byte token; httpOnly,
sameSite=lax
cookie. Login runs the hash even for a username that does not exist, so timing cannot enumerate accounts.

Leaflet + OpenStreetMap for the client map.

The rule that made all of it possible is that everything that decides a match runs on the server, and the decisions themselves are pure functions in one file that both the server and the tests import:

// Re-run the whole room after every fix: one new position can change
// several answers at once.
const exposed = exposedAt(track, now); // 5 min standing still
const hidden  = track.invisibleUntil > now;   // 45 s mission reward
if (!hidden && (track.exposed || inVision(eye.fix, track.fix))) {
  seen.push({ id, name, lat, lng }); // impostor sees only this
}

Identity comes from the session cookie on the socket handshake, never from anything the client claims, and a fix has to survive three server-side checks before it counts at all. The client is an input device and a screen — which is exactly what you want when the board is a few city blocks and the players are adversarial.

  What I would do differently

The AI layer earned its place by being removable. If the model had generated the missions themselves, a slow or silly reply would have been a broken match instead of a flat line of flavour text. I would make that trade again.

Lobbies and running matches live in memory, which is why the deploy runs exactly one instance. Fine for five players on foot; it is the first thing I would move to Postgres if the game ever needed a second server.

There is no license on the repo yet. The code is public, but public is not the same as open. That is the first thing on my list this week.

  Code

        MAXxDEVIL
       /
        Grass_touch

Impostor Hunt

Real-time, location-based social deduction for five phones. One player is the
impostor, four are survivors. Survivors complete missions and stay moving; the
impostor hunts them with a 40×40m vision cone. Survivors win by being the last
ones standing, by tagging the impostor while invisible, or when the impostor
quits; the impostor wins by catching everyone, or on points at the whistle.

Built in phases — see "Status" below for how far along it is.

Stack

Deliberately small: one Next.js app, one Postgres database, no Redis, no
PostGIS, no auth framework. Mission wording can be handed to a free, open-weight
model, but the game never requires it (phase 14).

Piece

Choice

App + realtime

Next.js 16 + Socket.IO on one port (
server.ts
)

Data

Postgres + Prisma 7 (driver adapter
@prisma/adapter-pg
)

Accounts

Hand-rolled sessions in Postgres;
scrypt
from
node:crypto

UI

Tailwind v4 with the palette in
src/app/globals.css

…

View on GitHub

Run it yourself:

pnpm install
cp .env.example .env
pnpm exec prisma dev -d # a local Postgres, no install
pnpm exec prisma migrate dev
pnpm dev                     # http://localhost:3000

For phones, tunnel it — location only works over HTTPS:

cloudflared tunnel --url http://localhost:3000

pnpm check
talks to the running server and reads the recorded rows back, asserting the realtime, account, lobby, position, catch, result and screen contracts. It fails loudly if a phase regresses, which is how I caught most of the bugs above before anyone else could.

  If you build something like this

The community has already written up the pieces I leaned on. If you are heading the same way, these are worth your time:

How I Built a Real-Time Multiplayer Chess Game with Video Calling Using Next.js, Socket.IO & WebRTC by Saptarshi Dey — the Next.js + Socket.IO shape.

The Two-Map Party Game Server: Building GameNight Without a Database by Abhijat Chaturvedi — keeping server state thin.

WebSockets in React Server Components: Client Islands by nainikmehta — do not copy server state into a global store.

Impostor Hunt: one impostor, four survivors, one neighbourhood. If you try it with friends, tell me what broke — the first fix always ends up in the README.
