Most text-to-speech (TTS) models today can generate impressive speech in English, French, and Modern Standard Arabic. But what happens when you try generating speech in Algerian Darija?

The results often sound unnatural, especially when the text contains French words mixed with Arabic, something extremely common in everyday Algerian conversations.

This is one of the problems we've been working on at Natiq Studio.

Today, I'd like to share Natiq-dz-ARG, an open-weight text-to-speech model developed specifically for Algerian Darija, along with some of the technical challenges we encountered while building it.

The Challenge: Algerian Darija Is Not Standard Arabic

Algerian Darija has unique vocabulary, pronunciation patterns, and linguistic influences from Arabic, French, and Amazigh.

One particularly interesting challenge is code-switching.

Consider a sentence like:

سلام خويا، حبيت نسقسيك على la livraison تاع هاد produit.

An Arabic TTS model might pronounce the French words incorrectly, while a French model will struggle with the Arabic parts.

For a natural result, the model needs to handle both languages while maintaining a consistent Algerian accent, rhythm, and speaking style.

This makes Algerian speech synthesis an interesting problem from a machine-learning perspective.

  Introducing Natiq-dz-ARG (ناطق)

Natiq-dz-ARG is an open-weight speech synthesis model trained specifically for Algerian Darija.

It was developed and is maintained by Natiq Studio.

Here are some of its main characteristics:

300+ hours of Algerian speech used for fine-tuning.

100+ speakers to capture different voices, accents, and speaking styles.

French code-switching within Algerian Arabic sentences.

Zero-shot voice cloning using short reference audio recordings.

24 kHz audio generation.

LoRA fine-tuning of the Higgs TTS 3.4B foundation model.

The aim was not simply to generate Arabic speech, but to produce speech that better reflects how Algerians communicate in everyday life.

  How We Trained It

One of the biggest challenges was getting the model to generalize across different speakers.

Our earlier experiments with single-speaker data struggled with overfitting. The resulting speech tended to reproduce characteristics of the training speaker rather than generalizing well to new voices and unfamiliar sentences.

To address this, we moved toward a much larger and more diverse dataset.

The training corpus eventually grew to over 300 hours of recordings from more than 100 speakers, helping the model learn Algerian pronunciation across different voices.

Another major challenge was transcript quality.

For example, French expressions in Algerian conversations are sometimes transcribed phonetically using Arabic letters.

A word like physicien might be represented as فيزيسيان.

During data preparation, we worked on cleaning and correcting these mixed-language transcripts to preserve French words where appropriate.

This was particularly important for improving code-switching.

  Why LoRA?

Instead of training a large speech model from scratch, we used Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) to fine-tune the existing
bosonai/higgs-tts-3-4b
model.

LoRA allows us to adapt a pretrained model by training a smaller number of additional parameters rather than updating every parameter in the original model.

This makes fine-tuning more computationally manageable while retaining useful knowledge from the foundation model.

The resulting adapter is available on Hugging Face.

  Zero-Shot Voice Cloning

Another interesting capability of Natiq-dz-ARG is zero-shot voice cloning.

Instead of training a separate model for every voice, the model can use a short reference audio recording to guide speech generation.

The inference process accepts:

A reference audio recording from a speaker.

The transcript of that recording.

The new Algerian Darija text to synthesize.

The model then generates speech conditioned on the reference voice.

This feature is useful for experimenting with speaker adaptation and studying how different voices affect speech synthesis.

Of course, reference voices should only be used with appropriate consent and permission.

Try the Model on Hugging Face

Natiq-dz-ARG is available for developers and researchers who want to experiment with Algerian speech generation.

Model weights and documentation:

https://huggingface.co/Natiq-Studio/Natiq-dz-ARG

Interactive demo:

https://huggingface.co/spaces/abdelhak-k/Natiq-dz-ARG

The Hugging Face repository includes Python inference instructions, reference audio examples, and information about the model's architecture.

Developers can run the model locally using a compatible CUDA GPU. The published instructions recommend at least 16 GB of VRAM.

The adapter is distributed under CC BY-NC 4.0, allowing non-commercial use under the license terms. Commercial use requires appropriate licensing, including compliance with the underlying foundation model's license.

From Research to Real-World Applications: Natiq Studio

Alongside the open-weight model, we're also developing Natiq Studio, a platform for generating Algerian Darija voiceovers without needing to configure or host a machine-learning model.

The platform is designed for creators, businesses, and developers who need Algerian speech generation for practical applications.

It currently offers:

Multiple Algerian male and female AI voices.

Text-to-speech generation in Algerian Darija.

Support for common French expressions mixed with Darija.

Downloadable WAV audio.

A REST API for integrating speech generation into applications.

100 free tokens for new accounts to experiment with the service.

The hosted platform is a separate service from the downloadable Natiq-dz-ARG model and does not currently offer user-uploaded voice cloning.

Integrating Natiq Studio into an Application

For developers who don't want to manage GPU inference themselves, Natiq Studio provides a REST API.

For example, you can request speech generation using a simple HTTP request:

curl -X POST https://natiq.studio/api/v1/speech \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $NATIQ_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
"text": "سلام عليكم خاوتي، واش راكم اليوم؟",
    "voice": "leila"
  }'

The API returns a speech job that can be retrieved when processing is complete.

Available voices can be retrieved through the
/voices
endpoint.

API keys should be stored securely on the server rather than exposed in frontend JavaScript.

The full documentation is available here:

https://natiq.studio/api/docs/

This makes it possible to integrate Algerian Darija speech generation into websites, mobile applications, content-production workflows, and other services.

  Why We're Sharing This

Algerian Darija is still underrepresented in speech AI.

We hope that making models like Natiq-dz-ARG accessible to researchers and developers will encourage more work on Algerian speech technology.

There's still plenty of room for improvement, particularly in regional accent coverage, pronunciation consistency, and mixed-language text handling.

For anyone interested in the project:

Try the platform: https://natiq.studio/

Explore the open-weight model: https://huggingface.co/Natiq-Studio/Natiq-dz-ARG

Read more about our training approach: https://natiq.studio/en/articles/natiq-v1-algerian-ai-speech-model-en/

I'd love to hear feedback from other developers working on speech synthesis, Arabic NLP, or low-resource languages.

Have you experimented with text-to-speech for dialects or languages that aren't well supported by mainstream AI models? What challenges did you encounter?
