Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming increasingly capable, but working with a general-purpose model in a specialized domain is still challenging.

Whether it's healthcare, finance, legal, agriculture, or education, every domain has its own terminology, context, requirements, and expectations.

A general-purpose model may understand the question but still struggle to provide accurate, domain-specific answers.

This is where Domain Alignment becomes important.
What is Domain Alignment?
Domain alignment is the process of adapting a pretrained language model to understand and respond effectively within a specific domain while retaining its general language capabilities.

The goal isn't simply to teach a model new information. It's to help the model understand domain-specific context, terminology, instructions, and expected response patterns.
How Can We Achieve Domain Alignment?
There are several approaches developers can explore:

1. Domain-specific data preparation

Preparing high-quality datasets from domain documents, question-answer pairs, technical resources, and real-world use cases.

2. Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT)

Training the model on domain-specific examples to improve its ability to follow instructions and generate relevant responses.

3. Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT)

Techniques such as LoRA and QLoRA can adapt models without updating all their parameters.

4. Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)

Connecting a model to external domain knowledge so it can retrieve relevant information when generating responses.

5. Evaluation and Benchmarking

Evaluating domain knowledge, answer correctness, relevance, consistency, and performance on unseen questions.
The Challenges I Find Interesting
There are a few questions worth exploring:

How much domain-specific data is actually needed?
How can we improve domain knowledge without losing general capabilities?
When should we use fine-tuning, RAG, or a combination of both?
How do we measure whether a model is genuinely aligned with a domain?
How can we prevent hallucinations when answering specialized questions?
Let's Discuss
I'm interested in learning from developers and researchers who have worked on domain-specific LLMs.

If you have adapted an open-weight model such as Qwen, Llama, Gemma, or Mistral to a specialized domain, I'd like to hear about your experience.

What approach did you use, what challenges did you face, and how did you evaluate the final model?

Let's share practical experiences, experiments, and lessons learned around domain alignment.
