Akeneo PIM v7 Reaches End of Support on 30 September 2026. Here Are the Options

The open-source PIM landscape changed twice in eighteen months. Most comparison articles still ranking for it haven't caught up. Current state, September 2026.

The date

Akeneo has published 30 September 2026 as the end of support for PIM v7. That is twenty-seven days from the date of writing.

It is worth stating precisely what that does and does not mean, because both halves are currently circulating in isolation.

It does mean a specific version reaches the end of its supported life on a specific date. Teams running v7 have an upgrade decision with a deadline attached.

It does not mean Akeneo is discontinued or unsupported. Akeneo's own help centre states that the Community Edition continues to be supported. The 30 September date attaches to v7 across editions, not to the Community Edition as a product.

Both are true simultaneously. Plan around the first. Ignore anyone selling urgency based on the second.

The change most articles missed

While attention was on Akeneo, the larger licensing shift happened elsewhere.

Pimcore's Community Edition is no longer GPLv3. With Platform version 2025.1, Pimcore moved the Community Edition to the Pimcore Open Core License (POCL). Version 2024.4 was the last GPLv3 release.

Under POCL, the Community Edition is free for non-production use, for non-profits, and for companies below EUR 5 million in annual revenue. Above that threshold, production use requires a commercial licence.

This is the change that catches teams out. An evaluation done in 2023 recorded Pimcore CE as free and GPLv3. A company that has since grown past EUR 5M has a different licensing position than the one in its comparison sheet. Source: pimcore.com/en/products/edition/community

Most ranking "open source PIM compared" articles still describe Pimcore CE as GPLv3. Publication dates are worth checking on anything in this space, including this article.

The systems as they stand

Akeneo Community Edition

Licensed under OSL 3.0. Mature, widely deployed, and backed by the largest partner and agency ecosystem in the PIM market, with a reference base going back over a decade. Hiring someone who already knows the system is easier here than anywhere else on this list.

The consideration is trajectory. The Community Edition has not been the focus of new feature development for some time, and the upgrade path points toward a paid edition. That is a legitimate commercial model. It should be a deliberate choice at selection time rather than a discovery in year three.

Pimcore Community Edition

The broadest platform here. PIM, DAM, MDM and CMS in one system. For requirements that genuinely span all four, nothing else on this list is comparable.

Three factors to weigh. The POCL licence and the EUR 5M revenue threshold, above. The implementation investment, which is substantial: the breadth requires significant developer time before there is a working system. And whether the breadth is needed at all. A team that requires product data management and nothing else acquires a large surface area it will never use.

OpenDXP

A community fork of Pimcore Community Edition, continuing under GPLv3.

For teams whose reason for choosing Pimcore CE was specifically the GPLv3 licence, this is the option the POCL change makes relevant. Smaller community than Pimcore itself. Omitted from most comparison articles entirely.

AtroPIM

Built on the AtroCore platform by AtroCore GmbH, Regensburg. GPLv3.

AtroCore's documentation states that the open-source edition ships with full functionality rather than a feature-limited free tier, which is more than several commercial community editions offer. API-centric architecture with a data model configurable without code. Strong for manufacturers and distributors with complex, deeply nested product data.

AtroCore also publishes a comparison of open-source PIM systems that ranks first for the obvious search term. Worth reading, with the same caution any vendor-authored comparison warrants.

Ergonode

Noted so evaluation time is not wasted. The public repositories were archived in February 2023. Current status is worth confirming before investing in a trial.

UnoPim

MIT licensed, with no revenue cap, no feature-gated edition and no separate enterprise build. Laravel 13. Integrated DAM in the core rather than as a paid add-on. Connectors for Shopify, Magento 2, WooCommerce and Odoo, alongside a REST API and an MCP interface. Built for high-volume catalogues, with a published account of operation beyond 10 million products. An AI agent manages the catalogue through natural language across 32+ actions, working with OpenAI, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and other providers.

The trade-offs, stated plainly:

It is the newest system on this list, with no ten-year reference base.
The community is smaller. Fewer existing answers to specific problems.
Fewer experienced implementation agencies. A procurement process requiring three independent quotes from certified partners is harder to satisfy here than with Akeneo.
It is a PIM with DAM, not a PIM/DAM/MDM/CMS platform. Requirements spanning all four point to Pimcore instead.

The case for it is the licence terms, the DPP support and the scale profile. It does not win on ecosystem maturity and should not be selected on that basis.

The criterion nobody had in 2023

Comparison sheets written three years ago share the same columns: attributes, variants, channels, locales, completeness, API, import and export.

There is a new column, and it arrives with a legal deadline rather than a preference.

The battery passport becomes mandatory on 18 February 2027 under EU Regulation 2023/1542, covering traction batteries, LMT batteries and industrial batteries above 2 kWh. That is under six months away.

The wider framework is the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781. ESPR is horizontal: it establishes the framework, and specific obligations arrive product group by product group through delegated acts. For most manufacturers the question is not whether a Digital Product Passport requirement will apply, but when.

This is where a compliance topic becomes a system selection topic. A Digital Product Passport is mechanically a structured set of product attributes: material composition, recycled content, substances of concern, and a SCIP declaration filed with ECHA. Attributes, in locales, versioned, published to a channel.

That is a PIM's job description, not a new software category.

The evaluation question for 2026 is therefore whether passport data lives in the same system as the rest of the product data, or in a separate service to be integrated and paid for separately. UnoPim ships DPP support natively in the 3.x line, including SCIP/ECHA declaration, material composition and recycled content. Other vendors are approaching this differently and some will approach it better. The gap worth closing is an evaluation sheet that does not mention it at all.

One caveat stated rather than buried: a PIM provides the data foundation for a passport. It does not deliver compliance. Compliance is a legal and process question, and software sold as the answer to it is oversold.

Decision guide

Running Akeneo v7. Plan the upgrade with 30 September on the calendar, rather than letting the deadline drive the decision in week four.
Evaluated Pimcore CE before 2025 and growing. Re-read the licence. The EUR 5M threshold may now apply.
Chose Pimcore CE specifically for GPLv3. Look at OpenDXP.
Complex manufacturing or distribution data. AtroPIM warrants a serious look.
Need PIM, DAM, MDM and CMS in one platform. Pimcore, accepting the implementation investment.
Want a permissive licence with no revenue ceiling, with DPP on the roadmap. UnoPim is worth evaluating, with the maturity trade-offs above understood in advance.

Open Source PIM im Jahr 2026: Was sich bei den Lizenzen geändert hat — und was das für Ihre Systemauswahl bedeutet

Wer heute ein Open-Source-PIM auswählt, arbeitet mit einer Liste, die vor zwei Jahren noch anders aussah. Bei zwei der drei bekanntesten Systeme haben sich Lizenz- oder Supportbedingungen verändert, bei einem dritten ist der Zustand der öffentlichen Repositories erklärungsbedürftig. Gleichzeitig kommt mit dem Digitalen Produktpass eine Anforderung hinzu, die 2023 in keiner PIM-Auswahl vorkam.

Viele Vergleichsartikel, die noch gut ranken, bilden diesen Stand nicht ab. Dieser Artikel schon.

Transparenzhinweis: Ich arbeite bei Webkul, dem Unternehmen hinter UnoPIM. UnoPIM kommt in diesem Vergleich vor. Ich habe versucht, die anderen Systeme so darzustellen, wie ihre Nutzer sie beschreiben würden — mit ihren Stärken und mit den Punkten, an denen sie an Grenzen stoßen.

Was sich 2025 und 2026 geändert hat

Pimcore: neue Lizenz mit Umsatzgrenze. Mit Platform-Version 2025.1 hat Pimcore die Community Edition von der GPLv3 auf die eigene Pimcore Open Core License (POCL) umgestellt. Version 2024.4 war das letzte GPLv3-Release. Nach den Angaben von Pimcore ist die Community Edition unter POCL kostenlos für nicht-produktive Nutzung, für akademische und gemeinnützige Einrichtungen sowie für Unternehmen mit weniger als fünf Millionen Euro Jahresumsatz. Darüber hinaus ist für kommerzielle Produktivnutzung eine Professional- oder Enterprise-Edition erforderlich. Das Angebot des Kerns als SaaS oder Managed Service für Dritte benötigt eine separate OEM-Lizenz.

Das ist eine sachliche Feststellung, keine Kritik: Der Quellcode bleibt einsehbar und anpassbar. Aber POCL ist keine OSI-anerkannte Open-Source-Lizenz, und die Umsatzgrenze ist ein Kriterium, das in einer Systemauswahl geprüft werden muss.

Akeneo: Supporthorizont für v7 endet. Akeneo hat für PIM v7 den 30. September 2026 als End-of-Support-Datum veröffentlicht. Version 7 erschien im März 2023. Zugleich weist Akeneo im eigenen Help Center darauf hin, dass die Community Edition weiterhin gepflegt wird und die veröffentlichten End-of-Support-Daten sich auf die PaaS- und On-Premise-Editionen beziehen.

Beide Aussagen stehen nebeneinander. Für viele Teams ist genau das der Punkt: Die strategische Richtung ist eindeutig SaaS, der selbst gehostete Weg ist nicht abgeschaltet, aber die Planbarkeit über fünf Jahre ist schwerer geworden.

Ergonode: öffentliche Repositories archiviert. Mehrere Ergonode-Repositories, darunter das Frontend, sind seit Februar 2023 archiviert und damit schreibgeschützt. Das Produkt selbst wird aktiv weiterentwickelt — der öffentliche Changelog zeigt regelmäßige Releases — aber erkennbar in einem kommerziellen Modell. In etlichen Vergleichsartikeln steht Ergonode noch unverändert als Open-Source-Empfehlung.

Die Systeme im Einzelnen

Akeneo Community Edition

Lizenz: OSL 3.0 · Stack: PHP / Symfony

Das bekannteste Open-Source-PIM, mit der größten Community und dem größten Ökosystem an Konnektoren und Dienstleistern. Die Oberfläche ist ausgereift, die Dokumentation gut, und in fast jedem europäischen Markt gibt es Agenturen mit Akeneo-Erfahrung.

Der Funktionsumfang der Community Edition ist gegenüber den kommerziellen Editionen deutlich reduziert. Erweiterte Regeln, Data-Quality-Funktionen und ein integriertes DAM liegen in den kostenpflichtigen Editionen. Dazu kommt der oben beschriebene Supporthorizont.

Geeignet für: Teams mit vorhandenem Akeneo-Know-how im Haus oder bei einer Agentur.

Pimcore Community Edition

Lizenz: POCL (bis 2024.4: GPLv3) · Stack: PHP / Symfony

Pimcore ist mehr als ein PIM: PIM, MDM, DAM und Content-Management in einer Plattform. Häufig dort im Einsatz, wo Produktdaten und Website aus einem System kommen sollen.

Zwei Einschränkungen. Erstens die neue Lizenz mit der Umsatzgrenze von fünf Millionen Euro — für ein wachsendes Unternehmen ist das eine Frage, die man vor und nicht nach der Einführung klärt. Zweitens: Pimcore ist eine Entwicklerplattform, kein fertiges Produkt. Ohne ein technisches Team, das Datenmodellierung und Betrieb übernimmt, kommt ein Pimcore-Projekt selten produktiv.

Wer die GPLv3-Basis weiterführen möchte, findet mit OpenDXP einen community-getriebenen Fork der Pimcore Community Edition, der unter GPLv3 bleibt. Der Fork ist unabhängig und nicht von Pimcore unterstützt — die üblichen Fragen nach Wartung und Langlebigkeit eines Forks gelten.

Geeignet für: Unternehmen mit eigenem Entwicklungsteam, Bedarf über reines PIM hinaus, und geklärter Lizenzsituation.

AtroPIM

Lizenz: GPLv3 · Stack: PHP 8.4, auf Basis von AtroCore

AtroPIM kommt von der AtroCore GmbH in Regensburg. Zwei Dinge heben es in dieser Liste heraus: Der Kern steht unter GPLv3 — einer echten Open-Source-Lizenz ohne Umsatzgrenze — und der volle Funktionsumfang ist in der freien Version enthalten. Kostenpflichtige Module sind Erweiterungen, keine Freischaltungen für Funktionen, die man ohnehin erwarten würde.

Das Datenmodell ist über Entity- und Layout-Manager ohne Programmierung konfigurierbar, die Architektur ist durchgängig API-zentriert. Für Hersteller mit ungewöhnlichen Produktstrukturen ist das ein realer Vorteil.

Die Community ist kleiner als bei Akeneo oder Pimcore, und der Betrieb setzt einen eigenen Linux-Server mit Root-Zugriff voraus — kein Shared Hosting.

Geeignet für: Mittelständler im DACH-Raum, die einen deutschsprachigen Anbieter wollen, ein konfigurierbares Datenmodell brauchen und technische Ressourcen für den Betrieb haben.

Ergonode

Lizenz: OSL 3.0 (öffentliche Repositories teils archiviert) · Stack: PHP / Symfony, Vue.js

Ergonode wurde für seine Benutzeroberfläche gelobt und war als „human-centric" PIM positioniert. Wer es heute als Open-Source-Option prüft, sollte den Stand der öffentlichen Repositories selbst anschauen, bevor er eine selbst gehostete Einführung plant.

Geeignet für: Teams, die das kommerzielle Produkt bewerten.

UnoPIM

Lizenz: MIT · Stack: Laravel 13 / PHP 8.4

Das jüngste System in dieser Liste, entwickelt von Webkul. Der Kern steht unter MIT-Lizenz, ohne Umsatzgrenze und ohne reduzierte „Community Edition" gegenüber einer Vollversion. Betrieb wahlweise selbst gehostet oder als Cloud.

Funktional: Produktdatenmanagement, integriertes DAM, Completeness-Tracking je Kanal und Sprache, Maker-Checker-Freigabeworkflow, granulare Rechte, Konnektoren für Shopify, Magento 2, WooCommerce und Odoo. Die Skalierbarkeit auf über zehn Millionen Produkte ist dokumentiert.

Ehrlich zu den Grenzen: UnoPIM ist seit 2024 am Markt. Die Community ist kleiner als bei Akeneo, es gibt weniger Agenturen mit Erfahrung, und wer ein System mit zehn Jahren Referenzprojekten sucht, findet es hier nicht.

Geeignet für: Teams, die Lizenzfreiheit ohne Funktionsbeschränkung wollen, und Laravel-Umgebungen.

Das Kriterium, das 2023 noch niemand hatte

Der Digitale Produktpass verändert die Anforderungen an ein PIM-System gerade grundlegend.

Ab dem 18. Februar 2027 ist der digitale Batteriepass nach der EU-Batterieverordnung (EU) 2023/1542 verpflichtend — für Traktions- und LMT-Batterien sowie Industriebatterien über 2 kWh. Die Ökodesign-Verordnung ESPR bildet den horizontalen Rahmen; konkrete Pflichten entstehen dort schrittweise über delegierte Rechtsakte je Produktgruppe, unter anderem für Eisen und Stahl, Textilien, Reifen und Aluminium.

Für Hersteller heißt das: Materialzusammensetzung, Rezyklatanteil, SCIP-/ECHA-Deklaration und Lebenszyklusdaten müssen strukturiert, gepflegt und ausleitbar vorliegen. Das ist der Definition nach eine PIM-Aufgabe.

In der Praxis scheitert der Produktpass selten an der Technik, sondern an der Datenhaltung: Materialangaben liegen in Tabellen, Konformitätsnachweise in E-Mail-Postfächern.

Bei den meisten Systemen in dieser Liste löst man das über zusätzliche Attribute, eigene Entwicklung oder einen Drittanbieter-Service. UnoPIM bildet die DPP-Felder seit Version 3.0 als reguläre Produktattribute ab, womit dieselben Mechanismen greifen wie für alle anderen Produktdaten — Freigabeworkflow, Vollständigkeitsprüfung, Export über API und Konnektoren.

Das ersetzt keine Compliance-Beratung. Es entscheidet aber darüber, ob die Datenbasis steht, wenn der eigene Stichtag kommt.

Es gibt keine allgemeingültige Antwort. Vier Fragen entscheiden eine Auswahl in der Praxis:

Wie viele Produkte und Varianten, und wie komplex ist die Kanalstruktur?
Wie viel Entwicklerkapazität steht dauerhaft zur Verfügung?
Welche Lizenzbedingungen gelten für uns bei unserem Umsatz — heute und in drei Jahren?
Welche regulatorischen Anforderungen kommen auf unser Sortiment zu?

Frage drei war bis vor Kurzem keine echte Frage. Sie ist jetzt eine.
