A clear, high-resolution recording is not necessarily useful training data for a robot.

The deciding question is whether the dataset contains the observations, actions, metadata, and evaluation evidence needed by the intended learning pipeline.

For teams assessing egocentric video, robot demonstrations, and multimodal capture, these six checks provide a practical starting point.

Verify what was actually recorded

Human egocentric video, robot teleoperation, and instrumented human demonstrations are not interchangeable.

A head-mounted RGB recording may capture hand-object interactions without recording robot actions. Teleoperation systems may record commanded actions, measured robot states, or both.

Before accepting a dataset, establish:

Which observations and actions are recorded?

How are action values represented?

Are actions measured, commanded, or inferred?

What is missing for the intended training method?

For example, the "Universal Manipulation Interface (UMI)" (https://umi-gripper.github.io/) uses a purpose-designed manipulation data collection approach. Ordinary head-mounted phone footage should not be assumed to contain equivalent action trajectories.

Validate timestamps and synchronization

When a dataset combines camera streams, robot state, or inertial measurements, timing errors can make otherwise useful signals difficult to interpret.

Ask for the timestamp definitions, clock relationships, dropped-frame records, and measured sensor alignment.

Check offset and drift at multiple points within recordings. A single synchronized event does not establish alignment over an entire session.

There is no universal synchronization tolerance suitable for every learning task. Define acceptance thresholds against the motion, sensors, and downstream method.

Inspect geometry and action semantics

Camera calibration and coordinate conventions matter when a learning pipeline needs geometric interpretation.

Review camera intrinsics, extrinsics, mounting configurations, calibration versions, and relevant reference frames.

For robot-action data, document units and distinguish position targets from position changes, commanded values from observed states, and joint-space from Cartesian representations.

The "Open X-Embodiment project" (https://arxiv.org/html/2310.08864v9) demonstrates why interpreting and standardizing action representations is essential when combining data from different robotic systems.

Measure task diversity, not just total hours

Total recording duration tells only part of the story.

A useful coverage report identifies how accepted demonstrations are distributed across tasks, environments, objects, operators, conditions, and outcomes.

The "DROID dataset" (https://arxiv.org/html/2403.12945v2) illustrates how robotics data can be described using distinct measures such as trajectories, scenes, tasks, and interaction hours.

Those dimensions should not be treated as interchangeable.

When evaluating generalization to unseen locations, use an appropriate location-held-out evaluation rather than relying solely on random frame splits.

Make quality assurance measurable

Agree on acceptance criteria before collection begins.

A practical dataset acceptance review can use this matrix:

Quality area| Evidence to request
Task coverage| Episode manifest by task, location, object, operator, and outcome
Geometry| Camera identifiers, calibration, coordinate conventions
Timing| Timestamp definitions, synchronization, drift, missing-frame report
Action semantics| Command/state distinctions, units, sampling policy
Labels and outcomes| Annotation guidelines, reviewer checks, success definitions
Delivery integrity| Stable IDs, checksums, exclusion records, permissions

Every rejected or reworked episode should have a traceable reason.

Example: Suppose a pilot submits 100 hours. Twelve hours fall outside the task specification, and eight hours have missing required views. If those groups do not overlap, 80 hours remain accepted.

That is an 80% acceptance yield. It does not establish sufficient task diversity or improved model performance.

Test whether the delivery is usable

The handoff should contain more than the media files.

A technically useful delivery includes an accepted episode manifest, metadata definitions, quality findings, exclusions, applicable rights documentation, and a repeatable procedure for loading representative samples.

Where possible, evaluate the candidate data against the existing training baseline under a controlled protocol.

If no model evaluation is available, report technical acceptance separately from model-performance claims.

Before scaling collection

The central question is not simply how many hours can be collected.

It is whether the receiving team can interpret, validate, and use the accepted dataset for its intended learning objective.

A small pilot with meaningful coverage and reproducible QA may provide better procurement evidence than a much larger collection whose action semantics or quality conditions remain unclear.
