Email Enrichment API: Six Checks You Can Run Free Before You Pay Per Email

Every enrichment vendor sells the same promise: upload a list of names, get back verified work emails. The pricing is per email, usually a few cents, and it is easy to burn a hundred dollars learning that "verified" means different things to different vendors.

Before you pay, run these six checks. The first four are free, deterministic, and take about twenty minutes. The last two are where the free layer genuinely ends, and knowing exactly why is the difference between a sane vendor bill and a mystery one. All the code below was executed while writing this post; the outputs are real.

  1. Syntax: the check nobody gets right

Email syntax is not a simple regex. The local part can be quoted (
"john doe"@example.com
), may contain plus-addressing (
john+tag@example.com
), and internationalised domains need IDNA encoding. A naive
^[\w.+-]+@[\w-]+\.[a-z]{2,}$
rejects valid addresses and accepts garbage like
a..b@example.com
.

The pragmatic version: reject what is structurally impossible, accept the rest, and let the mail server decide.

import re

LOCAL = re.compile(r'^[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&\'*+/=?^_`{|}~.-]+$')

def syntax_ok(addr: str) -> tuple[bool, str]:
    if addr.count("@") != 1:
        return False, "not exactly one @"
    local, domain = addr.rsplit("@", 1)
    if len(local) >= 2 and local[0] == local[-1] == '"':   # quoted local part
        local = "quoted"
    if not local or len(local) > 64:
        return False, "bad local part length"
    if local != "quoted" and (not LOCAL.match(local) or local.startswith(".") or local.endswith(".") or ".." in local):
        return False, "bad local part characters"
    if len(addr) > 254:
        return False, "too long"
    if "." not in domain or domain.startswith("-") or domain.endswith("-"):
        return False, "bad domain"
    return True, "ok"

Run against a few cases:

john@example.com             (True, 'ok')
john+tag@example.com         (True, 'ok')
a..b@example.com (False, 'bad local part characters')
.john@example.com (False, 'bad local part characters')
john@localhost               (False, 'bad domain')
"john doe"@example.com       (True, 'ok')
john@-bad.com                (False, 'bad domain')

This is a filter, not a verdict. Every address it passes still needs a DNS check.

  2. MX: does the domain accept mail at all

You do not need
dig
installed. DNS-over-HTTPS answers MX queries with one HTTP call, which is handy inside containers and serverless functions where you have no resolver tooling.

import json, urllib.request

def mx(domain: str):
    url = f"https://dns.google/resolve?name={domain}&type=MX"
    d = json.loads(urllib.request.urlopen(url, timeout=20).read())
    return d.get("Status"), [a.get("data") for a in d.get("Answer", [])]

Real output from the run (DNS returns MX records in a rotating order, so the sequence differs between queries):

gmail.com                            status=0  ['5 gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.', '20 alt2.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.', '10 alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.']
stripe.com                           status=0  ['20 alt1.aspmx.l.google.com.', '30 aspmx2.googlemail.com.', '10 aspmx.l.google.com.']
proton.me                            status=0  ['10 mail.protonmail.ch.', '20 mailsec.protonmail.ch.']
thisdomaindoesnotexist-9d8f7.com     status=3  []

Status 3
is NXDOMAIN: the domain does not exist, so the address cannot work. Anything with MX records passes this check.

The trap: MX says the domain accepts mail, not that the person exists.

mailinator.com        status=0  ['1 mail2.mailinator.com.', '1 mail.mailinator.com.']
guerrillamail.com     status=0  ['0 mail.guerrillamail.com.']

Both are disposable-mail providers. Both have valid MX. A list with MX-only validation is full of throwaway addresses that will bounce or never be read.

  3. Classification: role, disposable, and domain reputation

This is data work, not protocol work, and it is where free tooling is weakest. Three cheap layers:

Role addresses:
info@
,
sales@
,
support@
,
noreply@
,
admin@
,
postmaster@
. They deliver, but they are shared inboxes: your reply rate collapses and GDPR consent is murkier.

Disposable domains: maintain a blocklist of the few thousand throwaway providers.
mailinator.com
and
guerrillamail.com
above are two that pass an MX check.

Domain age and reputation: a domain registered three weeks ago with MX pointing at a cheap host is a weak signal, not a disqualifier.

You can run layer one and two offline in a few lines. Layer three needs a domain-age API, which is usually a paid call.

  4. SMTP RCPT: the check that actually answers "does this mailbox exist"

The only way to know whether
john@example.com
exists is to open an SMTP conversation and ask the receiving server for that recipient:

EHLO my-checker.example
MAIL FROM:<you@yourdomain.com>
RCPT TO:<john@example.com>

A
250
means the mailbox exists. A
550
usually means it does not. This is what most "email verification" vendors are doing, at scale, with warmed IPs.

Here is the same test run from a normal cloud container:

gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com port25 FAIL: OSError [Errno 101] Network is unreachable
mail.mailinator.com port25 FAIL: TimeoutError timed out

This is the whole story of the paid layer. Port 25 outbound is blocked on essentially every major cloud and PaaS. Your Lambda, your Cloud Run service, your Docker container on a managed host cannot open that connection. So you cannot verify mailboxes yourself, no matter how good your code is. You need either a host that will unblock port 25 on request for you (increasingly rare, and you have to warm the IP and handle greylisting), or a vendor who already did that.

  5. Catch-all detection: same wall, one step further

Many business domains accept any address at their domain:
anything@company.com
returns
250
. For those domains, RCPT tells you nothing about whether a specific person works there. The workaround is a domain-level probe: send RCPT for a random unlikely address, and if it returns
250
, mark the whole domain as catch-all and treat its results as "unknown".

That probe is also port 25. Same wall, same vendor.

A useful habit: store the catch-all verdict as a third state next to valid and invalid. A list that pretends every catch-all is valid will report a 5% bounce rate and look fine; the truth is you know nothing about those addresses.

  6. Consent and provenance: the check that survives an audit

Verification is not permission. An address that returns
250
is deliverable; it is not consented. Keep the source of every record, the timestamp, and the lawful basis, because the bounce rate is the small problem. The complaint rate and the regulator are the large ones. If you cannot say where a row came from, delete the row.

  Where the paid layer starts, and how to buy it without guessing

Once you accept that port 25 and catch-all probing are not things you will run yourself, the question becomes which provider. That is a real decision with published data behind it now. Firecrawl's Alexandria catalogue runs a public benchmark for people-search tools measured on real agent calls. Numbers below were pulled from it at 22:52Z on 2026-11-07 and change hourly, so check the live page before you commit:

14 people-search providers, 8 of them with enough calls to rank, 34.1K calls in the previous 24 hours.

Highest-quality entries on the leaderboard: QuickEnrich at 100% and 457 ms on its contact-finder tool (624 calls, 0–10 credits), LeadOcean at 100% and 6.0 s (480 calls), People Data Labs at 100% and 876 ms (145 calls, 50–60 credits per call), and MoltSets at 100% — but at 111.9 seconds per call, which no interactive agent can wait for.

The busiest tools are not the best ones. Apollo's person search handled 11.3K calls at 99.9% quality and 558 ms, while Data Legion's base person enrichment handled 12.6K calls at 72.9% quality — roughly a quarter of its calls come back as a tool error, and it is the second-busiest tool in the table.

Cost is per call in Firecrawl credits and varies by an order of magnitude across providers for the same capability: 0–10 credits at QuickEnrich and LeadOcean versus 50–60 at People Data Labs.

The provider-level row can hide the tool you actually call. Apollo ranks at 99.4% overall and at 99.9% on person search, but its person match tool is 95.4% at 71.3 seconds. Read the tool row, not the provider row.

Two reading notes that matter more than the ranking. First, "quality" here means calls answered without a tool error: it measures whether the provider responded, not whether the email address will bounce. Those are different questions, and only your own send test answers the second. Second, capability names matter: "person match", "person lookup", "contact finder" and "person enrichment" are different tools with different prices and different error profiles, so decide which one your pipeline actually needs before comparing vendors.

The useful pattern is the one the code above already suggests: do the four free checks locally, spend vendor calls only on records that survived them, and keep the catch-all verdict separate from the validity verdict. Pricing per call is published on the catalogue page so you can model the bill before you commit. If you want to skip integrating several of these providers separately, Firecrawl's Alexandria (affiliate link: a9n9 earns a commission if you buy) exposes the catalogue through the same SDK call you use for scraping, and the benchmark page above records the per-provider quality, latency and credit cost. Firecrawl's free plan is 1,000 credits a month with no card, which is enough to compare two or three providers on your own list before paying for anything.

  The checklist

Validate syntax with a parser, not a pretty regex.

Resolve MX over DoH; treat NXDOMAIN and no-MX as dead, everything else as "unknown".

Blocklist disposable domains and tag role addresses; both pass MX.

Accept that SMTP RCPT needs port 25, and that your cloud host does not give it to you.

Store catch-all as its own state, never as valid.

Buy calls per capability, not per vendor, and compare the published per-call cost.

Keep provenance and consent next to every address, or delete the record.

None of this is exotic. It is the difference between a list you can defend and a pile of addresses that costs you money twice: once to buy, once to bounce.

  Web Scraping into LLM-Ready Datasets: A Five-Stage Pipeline with Working Code

If you're fine-tuning a language model or building a RAG pipeline, the quality of your training data matters more than the model architecture. The web is the largest source of text data available, but turning raw web pages into clean, structured datasets ready for LLM training is a non-trivial engineering problem. This guide walks through the five stages of that pipeline, plus the code you need at each one.

  Why Web Data Matters

Modern LLMs are trained on trillions of tokens, much of it scraped from the web. For teams building domain-specific models — legal, financial, technical documentation, or niche verticals — the general web corpus isn't enough. You need targeted, high-quality data from specific sources. The challenge is doing this at scale without spending weeks writing custom scrapers for every site.

  The Pipeline: Five Stages

A robust web-to-LLM data pipeline has five stages:

  1. Source Discovery

Before you scrape anything, you need to know what's out there. For a documentation site, this means finding all the pages. For a news site, it means identifying article URLs and filtering out navigation, ads, and user-generated content.

The key decision here is depth vs. breadth. A shallow crawl of many sites gives you diverse data; a deep crawl of one site gives you coherent, domain-specific data. Most fine-tuning projects benefit from the latter.

  2. Content Extraction

Once you have URLs, you fetch the pages and extract the meaningful content. This is harder than it sounds. Modern websites are JavaScript-heavy, hide content behind logins, use infinite scroll, or serve different content to bots. A good extraction tool handles:

JavaScript rendering for dynamic sites

Boilerplate removal (headers, footers, ads, navigation)

Metadata extraction (author, date, title, language)

Selection of main content vs. sidebars and comments

  3. Data Cleaning

Raw extracted text is rarely ready for training. You need to:

Remove duplicate content (same article syndicated across sites)

Filter by language if you're building a monolingual model

Strip or normalize HTML remnants, URLs, and formatting artifacts

Remove low-quality content (short pages, pages with too many non-text elements)

Deduplicate at the document and paragraph level

The dedupe step is the one people skip. Near-duplicate boilerplate (license text, cookie banners, "Related articles") inflates your token count and teaches the model nothing. A cheap 30-line pass catches most of it:

import hashlib, re

def shingles(text, n=5):
    """Word n-grams, lowercased and punctuation-stripped."""
    words = re.findall(r"\w+", text.lower())
    return {" ".join(words[i:i+n]) for i in range(len(words) - n + 1)}

def dedupe(texts, n=5, threshold=0.8):
    seen_hashes, seen_sh, kept = set(), [], []
    for t in texts:
        exact = hashlib.blake2b(t.encode(), digest_size=16).hexdigest()
        if exact in seen_hashes:          # bit-identical copy
            continue
        seen_hashes.add(exact)
        sh = shingles(t, n)
        # near-duplicate: Jaccard overlap with anything already kept
        if any(len(sh & prev) / max(1, len(sh | prev)) >= threshold
               for prev in seen_sh):
            continue
        seen_sh.append(sh)
        kept.append(t)
    return kept

It is O(n²) on the shingle comparisons, which is fine for a few thousand documents and hopeless for a few hundred thousand — swap in MinHash/LSH (or
datasketch
) once the corpus outgrows a laptop.

Tune
n
and
threshold
on a labelled sample. On documentation sites
n=5, threshold=0.8
collapses syndicated copies while keeping genuinely distinct pages; for forum or chat data you'll want a lower threshold, because two threads often share a long quoted preamble.

  4. Quality Validation

Not all text is equally useful for training. Quality signals include:

Content length (very short pages rarely teach much)

Readability scores

Presence of structured elements (headings, lists, code blocks)

Language confidence scores

Domain relevance (is this actually about your topic?)

  5. Storage and Export

The final stage converts cleaned data into the format your training pipeline expects — JSONL with text fields, Parquet for large datasets, or direct integration with tools like LangChain's document loaders. Maintain version control and documentation so you can reproduce your dataset.

  Using Firecrawl in the Pipeline

To keep this concrete I'll use Firecrawl (affiliate link: a9n9 earns a commission if you buy) as the example crawler — a web scraping API built for exactly this job. Everything below also works with other tools; the code samples use Firecrawl's current Python SDK.

  Mapping a Site

map
discovers all pages on a site — sitemaps plus link following — which is your source discovery stage:

from firecrawl import Firecrawl

firecrawl = Firecrawl(api_key="fc-YOUR_API_KEY")

res = firecrawl.map(url="https://docs.example.com", limit=500)
for link in res.links:
    print(link.url, link.title)

Run this first, look at the list, and hand-prune the obvious junk (login pages, tag archives, paginated duplicates) before you spend credits crawling it.

  Crawling and Extraction

crawl
walks the site, renders JavaScript, and returns clean markdown or HTML. You can cap the page count and ask for main content only, which drops navigation and footers before you ever see them:
)
print(job.status, job.completed, "/", job.total)
for page in job.data:
    print(page.metadata.title, len(page.markdown))

If you don't want navigation and footers in the output,
scrape
accepts
only_main_content=True
; the same option goes inside
scrape_options
on a crawl. It is not magic — it's a heuristic over the DOM — so spot-check twenty pages before trusting it.

For a one-off page,
firecrawl.scrape(url, formats=["markdown"])
is the single-page version.

  Batch Scraping

When you already have a URL list, batch endpoints handle hundreds or thousands of pages in parallel instead of one at a time. This is the workhorse of the extraction stage: feed it your pruned
map
output and it returns one document per URL.

  LangChain Integration

If you're building a RAG pipeline, the
langchain-firecrawl
package wraps the v2 SDK as a LangChain document loader:

from langchain_firecrawl import FirecrawlLoader

loader = FirecrawlLoader(url="https://docs.example.com", mode="crawl")
docs = loader.load()
print(len(docs), docs[0].page_content[:200])

Note the package name: the older
FireCrawlLoader
in
langchain_community
still calls v1 SDK methods and now fails against the current API, so don't copy it from older tutorials.

This skips the manual cleaning and formatting steps for RAG use cases — it does not skip deduplication, so run the pass above on
docs
before you embed.

  Practical Tips

Start small. Crawl 10-20 pages first and inspect the output quality before scaling up.

Respect robots.txt and rate limits. Firecrawl handles this, but be aware of what you're crawling.

Filter aggressively. It's easier to filter down than to clean up a messy dataset later.

Version your datasets. Track which URLs were crawled, when, and with what parameters.

Mix sources. A dataset built from 5-10 high-quality sources is often better than one massive scrape.

  What You Get

A well-executed web-to-LLM pipeline gives you clean, structured, domain-relevant data that would otherwise take weeks to collect manually. For teams fine-tuning models on technical documentation, product manuals, or niche content, this is often the difference between a model that knows your domain and one that doesn't.

  If you would rather not build the plumbing

Everything above runs on a crawler that returns clean markdown per page, applies the same URL filtering you wrote in stage two, and handles the batch fan-out in stage three. The tool linked earlier in this pipeline does exactly that, and its free tier is 1,000 credits a month with no card, which is enough to run a small domain end to end before you decide whether to pay for volume.
