Outreachy has been a rewarding opportunity for me. It was such an honor working as an intern at Mboalab Yaounde, Cameroon.

Skills-growth

Outreachy has helped me grow, especially in my design skills. I have been an academic research assistant for a while, doing data analysis using SPSS software for final year students too. Being a graphic designer, I Had just started struggling with UIUX designing, and this internship improved this skill alongside my technical writing, project management and great interpersonal skills in a geometric way.

Mentor help

My mentor has been with me every step of the way during this internship. Creating time from his schedule and giving me all I need to scaleup during this internship. We have had weekly standups, and the chat forums such as WhatsApp, Slack and Zulip were always available to ask for help. He has shared links to countless opportunities on our WhatsApp chat forum which is the most active during this internship. He shared opportunities in open source such as internships, study programs, conferences, jobs etc. Most of what he shared, I forward them to my Google Developers Group, Bamenda, and Women Techmakers Bambili, WhatsApp groups for which I am a co-organizer at both communities. These opportunities has helped many community members.

Opportunities

I am super grateful to my mentor for always sharing, and because of that, I got into Open Life Science (OLS-7) internship for which I am working on a global network for tech careers to reduce the confusion and mental health of struggling in the tech field. This platform will enable everyone find their way through the tech field with ease either with their academic qualifications such as a bachelor, masters degree or their natural skills such as great communication, great interpersonal skills, organizational skills etc.
Through this internship, i got to know about other programs such as Google summer of code, Google summer of docs, Summer of bitcoin, linux foundation, and a host of others which I will share and exploit. Outreachy has a job stream on zulip and an opportunities page.

I will be mentoring in Mboalab under Outreachy on a global network for hospitals, so information on available services and illnesses can be shared, thus referrals won't be as complicated given each medical personnel and patient will know exactly which hospital offers which service and where. This will intend reduce mortality rate worldwide, and improve the health system technologically.

Continuing in my organization

I discussed with my mentor on how to continue contributing to the growth of Mboalab, which also doubles as a Higher Institute of Learning (University) now. I intend to visit and get to know more about the organization physically in some weeks ahead. I have been sharing about my Outreachy journey at events organized by GDSC Bamenda, GDG/WTM Bambili, GDG/WTM Bamenda. On one, I was a panelist at WTM Bambili and shared my experience.

I am looking forward to sharing my Outreachy experience during other events such as international women's day.

Informal chat

Outreachy has helped discovered so many things especially using markdown for writing. I also got to know about informal conversations with people you admire and how to approach them.

On an internship task of having an informal communication, I reached out to @kolokodess about being a member of SCA, and she replied my request. I admire the organization and all the opportunities I come across on her slack channel. Hopefully, we get a chapter in Bamenda as many young women are thriving in Tech from that community.

Boosting my confidence

Outreachy has boost up my confidence in many ways. I was usually scared of writing, thinking i can only write if it was a WoW article, but the blogposts during this internship is a reminder that every moment is a wow moment and deserves to be documented. I got to make friends, and got introduced to Google cloud games, which I love doing, and currently, the arcade is making it interesting for me, with 9+ badges as seen on my Google cloud arcade game profile.

Progress on my project

The project is to develop a digital stethoscope. I was the UIUX intern and with all the positive criticism from my mentor and fellow interns, we finished the UIUX of the stethoscope application as seen on the design. The part I did not complete was to create content for the application. These articles were in relation to user guide, and some health tips. Given the development is still in progress, I did not finish writing the articles.

The next step to completing this project will be to finish the development and articles of this project.

Conclusion

I have updated my LinkedIn profile as an Outreachy intern. Thank you Outreachy organizers, my mentor and fellow interns (or colleagues) for an amazing 3 months learning experience.

Introduction.

Hello there, I am working on improving a digital stethoscope application at Mboalab, Yaoundé-Cameroon for the Outreachy internship. This organization is a medical facility which embeds technology in its projects to provide community and lifelong education for the general public. Their main goal is to facilitate access to basic health care using the technology of telemedicine, that is, remotely diagnosing and facilitating treatment of patients by using technology.

Who can be part of the Mboalab community?.

If you love solving community problems in areas of healthcare and education, then Mboalab community is a great fit for you. They are committed to serving as a platform to propose solutions that meet the needs of the community and hence, the purpose for the open source wireless 3D printed digital stethoscope project.

What is the project about?

So, what is a stethoscope? It is simply a device that converts sound waves to digital or electric waves. So, any ailment or disease that is sound related, the stethoscope is an inevitable tool. Also, most people perceive the stethoscope as a sign of the medical profession, like a chalk to a teacher or a voltage tester to an electrical engineer, cool right? 😉.
So medical practitioners use the stethoscope to listen to sounds from the heart, or lungs to do further diagnosis of diseases. A normal or abnormal sound could signify one or two disease-related issues (P.S: I am not a doctor).

What problem is it trying to solve?

Now, modern stethoscopes are very costly, and this pose a major problem especially in low and middle income countries where few can afford. Also, the contact and sharing of stethoscopes can result in cross-contamination as someone touches the stethoscope. Having said all that, the problem this project is solving is to limit the contact of medical practitioners with patients, and enable remote utilization of a stethoscope by literally any android phone user.

How does the project fits in to the community?

Given the affordability of an android phone, this will be a very helpful tool to the common man.
Also, the heart is the most vital organ of the body, as such everyone will eventually use the digital stethoscope, so to send in heartbeats into the system, and get feedback if it is normal or not, hence facilitating diagnosing and subsequently, better health care. The stethoscope also record the sound of the lungs of the users.

What excites me about this project?

I am so excited being a part of this project given my curiosity in consultations and how to diagnose someone with the normality of his/her heartbeat, or lung sound. I will install the application and use it so often on everyone around me, even those who can not afford an android phone.

What confused me about the project?

To say what confused me the most was the misconception that we were building an application for doctors only. I was then clarified by my mentors, so I will basically explain what the application does.

What I have learnt for the past month?

To answer my clarity about the project, I will just give the basic functionality. So,

A user installs and launches the application
Connect a Bluetooth noise cancelling headset (earphones, airpods call it whichever)
Press and hold the record button
Place his/her/their device microphone unto the heart (for a heartbeat) or breathe into the microphone (for a lung sound)
Record, edit and send the recorded sound into the system.
Our AI model then analyzes the sound
Sends feedback to indicate normality of the sound. The application also provides insight (blogposts) on health related articles and about the Mboalab community.

My experience at Mboalab organization during this internship period has been an amazing one. I have learnt alot regarding machine learning and some technologies. My favorite being Tensorflow, which after my research, I gathered the following regarding tensorflow terminology.

Body

Everyone struggles

Yay!!!, It's Friday and there is connectivity atleast, and what a relief.

This is how I felt when writing this blog post.

For some reasons, the connectivity issues in Cameroon particularly in Bamenda has been messy for the past week. Sure, I could chitchat on WhatsApp, but come-on, I needed more than just chitchat to live.

I was unable to use my search engine ( Google) talk less of launching Figma for my design task.

I thought it was my service provider ORANGE Cameroon, and So, I went on to purchasing Camtel SIM and a MODEM, yet same issue.

I relocate to another area in my city, and was still struggling with connectivity.

I felt really frustrated and disappointed as it showed I was pulling my teammates backward.

Thank God It is stable now.

I am going to catch up, and balance the time lost. I saw a tweet about the good news with the service providers enabling roaming services, and this is actually fantastic. Check out the tweet Here.

Who am I?

Hi there, My name is Agien Petra Ukeh, also known as PDOC. I have a Bachelor of Technology in Software Engineering, and I am interested flutter mobile Application development. Currently, I am a data analysist using #SPSS, and an academic research assistant/writer. I have great project management skills, social media and community management experience, coupled with graphic design skills. My interest in Telemedicine is my main interest in the Mboalab community for which I am interning on working on a digital Stethoscope application.

My core values

Fulfilment:

Nothing brings me more joy than when i feel fulfilled. My fulfillment comes from making an impact in my community. From being the marketing lead of my GDSC, to being an organizer at the WTM of my community, each time there is an impactful event, i derive so much joy.

Strange enough, I believe the world is full of goodness, and i give everyone a shot at being good. I just believe we are born with consciences and it could only be a thing or two that will cause someone to act otherwise.

Constructive criticism

I believe in honest opinions and as such, when i am positively criticize, for some reason, it gives me joy as it always gives me room to grow. Given that i like learning, this value of mine is my most satisfying value.

My motivation for Outreachy.

I've always enjoyed community contributions but had no experience with international/open source communities. When i heard of Outreachy from a past intern during one of our events, I felt like this is it for me. So, I got to the website, and found out more about the internship. I then applied, and coming across Mboalab increased my motivation. I had contributed to this organization for two cohorts, but was not shortlisted. I did not stop, and each time, I got better and learnt alot. I was so excited about getting selected for this particular organization, and I intend to input my best, and showcase the amazing projects this organization is incharge of.
