Many businesses ask for "a website" when what they really need is a web application, or the other way round. Here is a short guide to telling them apart and planning the right project.

 The difference

A website publishes information: who you are, what you offer, how to contact you. It is mostly design, content and search visibility.

A web application lets people log in and do things: place orders, approve requests, see dashboards. It adds a database, user accounts, permissions and business rules.

Most projects need both: a public site that attracts visitors, and an application behind a login where the work happens.

 A typical process

Discovery: the goal, the users and what is blocking launch.

Scope: the must-have features for version one, written down and split into milestones.

Design: key screens and user flows agreed before heavy development starts.

Build: front end and back end in weekly working increments.

Testing: you click through working software every week, not only at the end.

Deployment: hosting, security and backups, with documentation your team can use.

 Stack

For most business web applications: React or Angular on the front end, Node.js on the back end, and MongoDB or a relational database. They are widely used and easy to hire for later. Plan integrations (payments, accounting, ERP) early, because they affect schedule and cost.

 For startups and SMEs

Build the smallest useful version first and extend it from real feedback.

I am Ahmer Najam, a full stack developer and solution architect in Karachi, Pakistan, working with clients worldwide.
