I built a free CGPA calculator for Pakistani students

Every result season, the same scene repeats in Pakistani universities:
students get their marks, crowd around whoever "knows the formula", and
try to work out their CGPA on paper. Half of them get it wrong, because
the formula is weighted — and almost nobody weights it correctly by hand.

So I built the tool I wished existed: The CGPA Calculator — a free CGPA, GPA and
percentage calculator made specifically for Pakistani university students.
No sign-up, no ads-in-your-face, works on a cheap phone over a slow
connection.

The actual math (it's simple, but easy to get wrong)

Under the HEC 4.0 scale, each grade has fixed points:

Grade

Points

A

4.00

A-

3.67

B+

3.33

B

3.00

B-

2.67

C+

2.33

C

2.00

C-

1.67

D+

1.33

D

1.00

F

0.00

GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours)

The credit-hour weighting is the whole game. A 3-credit course moves your
GPA three times more than a 1-credit lab. The classic student mistake —
averaging semester GPAs to get a CGPA — is wrong for the same reason:
semesters don't all carry the same credit hours.

CGPA → percentage uses the standard local conversion: percentage =
CGPA × 9.5. The site has a dedicated converter because job
and scholarship forms here still ask for percentages.

Design decisions that mattered more than the code

Mobile-first, lightweight pages. Most users are on Android phones
with patchy data. If the calculator isn't instant, it's useless.

No accounts, no storage. Students shouldn't have to hand over
personal data to do arithmetic. Everything runs in the browser session.

University-specific pages. Grading bands differ slightly between
universities, so the site has dedicated pages for major Pakistani
universities instead of pretending one band table fits everyone.

Explain, don't just compute. Every calculator page explains the
formula underneath it. A student who understands the math stops
fearing result day.

What students actually use it for

Checking their exact standing the day results drop

Target-setting: "what grades do I need next semester to reach 3.5?"

Scholarship and job forms that need a percentage equivalent

Verifying the university's own transcript math (mistakes do happen)

If you're a student, it's free to use. If you're a developer, my honest
takeaway is this: the most useful tools are often boring arithmetic
wrapped in local knowledge — the right grading scale, the right
conversion, the right defaults for your audience. Build for the form your
users actually have to fill.

Feedback welcome — especially from students at universities whose grading
bands we should add next.

— Ahtasham Sifat
