Here's the part of self-publishing nobody warns you about: your book's listing gets maybe two seconds of a shopper's attention, and the description is doing all the selling. I've spent far too long staring at blank description boxes, so I reverse-engineered what actually converts and turned it into a repeatable structure. 1. The structure that works

Shoppers skim, so your description needs five beats in this order:

The hook — one line that names the reader and the payoff. ("Struggling to help your child learn to read?")

Starting January 20, 2026, buyers of your DRM-free Kindle books can download EPUB & PDF copies. Here's what changed — and how to decide per book in 5 minutes.

I publish books on Amazon KDP, and this week Amazon quietly changed how DRM works for self-published e-books. If you publish DRM-free books, readers can now download your book as a PDF or EPUB starting January 20, 2026 — good news for readers, but a decision you now have to make about every book on your shelf. Here's the short version of what actually changed, and what to do about it today.

1. What actually changed

Starting January 20, 2026, verified buyers of DRM-free Kindle e-books published via KDP can download the book as EPUB and PDF from Amazon's "Manage Your Content and Devices" page.

Readers can move the file to any e-reader, app, or PDF reader — not just Kindle.
Royalty rates and payment structure are unchanged.
This is about formats, not money.

2. New books vs existing books

A state certificate with two misspellings made international news this year. Here's how to make award, completion and recognition certificates that look credible — in your browser, in minutes.

Earlier this year, a national honor made headlines for all the wrong reasons. A "Guardian of the Blue Horizon" certificate reportedly misspelled "Republic" as "Repubblic" and "Seychelles" as "Seycheeles" — and coverage noted the document itself looked machine-made. (The issuing government later said the flawed version was a mistaken early draft, but the damage was already done.)

I watched that story and thought: a certificate is a small piece of paper, but done badly it becomes a punchline. Yet most people who need one — a teacher, a team lead, a PTA organizer, an HR person — have no design software, no budget for a designer, and no time to learn either.

1. The anatomy of a credible certificate

Every certificate, from a formal diploma to a classroom award, is built from the same parts:
