This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass

  What I Built

AI That Takes You Beyond the Screen

We built an AI-powered outdoor companion designed to help people reconnect with the real world through exploration, nature, and everyday outdoor activities.

Instead of keeping users glued to their screens, our application uses AI to turn the outdoors into an interactive experience. Whether someone wants to explore nearby nature trails, identify birds, plan a gardening session, discover scenic routes, or simply spend more time outside, the app helps make stepping outdoors easier, smarter, and more engaging.

🤖 Open-Source AI at the Core

Our vision is to make outdoor intelligence accessible, private, and adaptable. By building around open-weight AI models and open-source tools, the application can support local inference, model customization, and flexible integrations without depending entirely on proprietary AI APIs.

This approach creates opportunities for offline assistance, reduces dependence on paid services, and gives developers the freedom to improve the system for different environments and communities.

🌍 Why Open Innovation Matters

Nature should be accessible to everyone, not just people with expensive devices, constant internet access, or paid AI subscriptions. Open-source AI gives us the flexibility to build a more inclusive outdoor companion that can evolve with its users and work toward keeping personal data under their control.

Our goal is simple: make technology the bridge to the outdoors, not another reason to stay inside. Less scrolling. More exploring. More real-world experiences.

AI That Takes You Beyond the Screen I built an AI-powered outdoor companion designed to help people reconnect with the real world

  How I Built It

built Touch Grass, an AI-powered outdoor companion designed to encourage people to spend less time on screens and explore the real world.

AI-Assisted Development

I used AI coding assistants to help plan the application, generate and refine code, design the user interface, troubleshoot errors, and improve the overall user experience. I broke the project into smaller components and developed them iteratively.

Open-Source AI Integration

The core idea is to use an open-weight AI model instead of relying entirely on closed, proprietary AI services. Such a model can power outdoor recommendations, nature-related questions, gardening guidance, and exploration assistance. Depending on the model and deployment, it can also support local inference and greater data privacy.

Connecting AI With Real-World Activities

The application is designed to turn AI responses into practical actions—such as discovering nature, planning outdoor activities, learning about birds, or exploring trails—rather than encouraging endless screen time.

Testing and Improvement

I used an iterative development process: building features, testing the interface, identifying issues, and using AI assistance to debug and improve the code.

Why Open Source?

Open-source AI offers flexibility to change models, customize behavior, reduce dependence on paid APIs, and potentially run inference locally. This makes the project more adaptable and gives developers greater control over how AI is used.

The main idea behind Touch Grass is simple: use AI to help people experience more of the real world, not spend more time inside an app.

  🌍 Why This Innovation Matters

In a world where people spend hours scrolling through screens, Touch Grass uses AI to encourage a healthier connection with the world around us. Instead of being another app that demands attention, it aims to turn technology into a tool for exploration, learning, and real-world experiences.

Open-source AI makes this vision more meaningful. It gives developers the freedom to customize models, reduce dependence on expensive proprietary APIs, and potentially run AI locally—helping protect user privacy and making selected features available without constant internet access.

This approach can also make nature-related knowledge more accessible to people who lack specialized equipment or expensive subscriptions.

What makes Touch Grass different is its purpose: technology becomes the starting point for an outdoor experience, not the destination.

Our innovation matters because the future of AI should not be measured only by how much time people spend using technology, but also by how meaningfully technology improves their lives beyond the screen.

Thanks
