How to compare the real total price of a rental car offer

Disclosure: I'm Aleks, the founder of CheapCarRent, an Estonia-based car rental marketplace. This is general advice from working with rental companies, not a data study, and it applies whichever site you book on.

The headline price on a rental offer is rarely what you end up paying. Two offers that look €20 apart can swap places once you add up everything the contract says. Here is the checklist I use when I compare offers for myself.

 1. Price per rental, not per day

Compare the full amount for your exact dates. Many companies price by 24-hour blocks, so returning a car two hours late can add a whole extra day. Check the pickup and return times you entered match your flights.

 2. Fees that only appear at the desk

Read the terms for airport or station surcharges, one-way fees, young or senior driver fees, an extra driver, out-of-hours pickup, and cross-border permission. Child seats and snow chains are often charged per day with a cap. None of these are hidden if you read the terms, but they rarely show up in the first number you see.

 3. The deposit is cash you can't use

The deposit is not a cost, but it blocks money on your card for the whole trip and sometimes for days afterwards. Check the amount, whether it must be a credit card in the main driver's name, and whether debit cards are accepted. A cheap offer with a very high deposit can be a poor deal if it eats your travel budget.

 4. Excess and insurance

Basic cover usually comes with an excess, which is the amount you pay if the car is damaged. Compare the excess between offers, and decide before you arrive whether you'll buy the company's reduced-excess cover, use a separate policy, or accept the risk. Deciding at the counter, tired after a flight, is how people overpay.

 5. Fuel policy

Full-to-full is the easiest to compare: you pay only for the fuel you use. Full-to-empty or prepaid fuel often includes a service charge and no refund for what's left in the tank.

 6. Mileage and cancellation

Check for a daily kilometre limit and what each extra kilometre costs. Then check the cancellation rules: until when it's free, and what you lose after that.

What this guide can't tell you

It can't rank companies for you, and the right choice depends on your trip. A slightly more expensive offer with full-to-full fuel, a lower excess and free cancellation is often the cheaper one in the end. The habit that matters is simple: open the terms of the two or three cheapest offers and add everything up before you book.

Airport or city centre? What one winter car hire snapshot showed

Disclosure: I'm the founder of CheapCarRent, an Estonian online car rental marketplace. The numbers below come from our own site's search results, not from an independent survey.

A common travel tip says you can save money by skipping the airport desk and picking up your rental car in town. We wanted to see whether our own search results backed that up.

On 27 October 2026 we looked at what our platform displayed for a 7-day rental from 11 to 18 January 2027, with the car returned where it was collected. We counted only economy-class cars (mini and economy), left out offers that send the customer to another broker's site, and compared the cheapest airport offer with the cheapest offer elsewhere in the same city. Totals include our 17% online fee.

Ten cities had economy offers in both places. In nine of them, the airport was cheaper. In one, Athens, the two were equal (EUR 27.67 for the week). The city option never came out ahead.

City

Airport, cheapest week (EUR)

Off-airport, cheapest week (EUR)

Difference (EUR)

Zagreb

35.76

39.35

3.59

Madrid

109.14

138.73

29.59

Budapest

176.54

249.91

73.37

Vilnius

88.46

221.69

133.23

Rome

102.62

286.57

183.95

Barcelona

121.27

309.93

188.66

Split

65.52

276.41

210.89

Riga

56.99

387.25

330.26

Tallinn

121.50

489.06

367.56

The median gap across the ten cities was EUR 158.59 for the week.

Why this might be

"Off-airport" here mostly means a supplier's railway station, port or downtown office (Roma Termini, Barcelona Sants, Tallinn Port, Trogir rather than central Split). Those branches tend to have fewer cars, and fewer cars on offer means less price competition. We didn't test that explanation; it's a guess.

The limits of this snapshot

This is one search on one day, for one January week in low season. Most offers, including nearly all of the cheapest ones, come from a single supplier on our platform. Its prices haven't been independently checked, and its checkout was still marked as pending on our side when we ran the search. Several cities (Helsinki, Warsaw, Prague, Vienna, Malta, Lisbon, Palma) had no comparable off-airport economy offer, and Berlin, Paris and Dublin returned no offers at all. So this shows what our platform displayed, not how the wider market works.

The takeaway is simple: don't assume town is cheaper. Check both pick-up points for your dates, and compare deposit and fuel policy as well as the price.

You can run the same comparison yourself at cheapcarent.com.

Seven ways rental company APIs disagree about what a "car" is (notes from a solo marketplace founder)

I'm the solo founder of CheapCarRent, an Estonia-based car rental marketplace. Most of the work is not the website, it is connecting rental companies' systems so their cars and prices show up in one search. Here are the places where those systems disagree the most. Maybe it saves someone an afternoon.

1. Locations are the hardest part. One system gives you an airport code, another a free-text branch name, another coordinates, and some give only a city. If you resolve "Vienna" to the wrong country code once, customers will see cars in the wrong city. We now verify that every offer has a pick-up point that can actually be placed on a map, and drop offers that can't.

2. "Deposit" and "insurance" get mixed up. Some APIs return the deposit as an insurance line with a price, and a naive mapper then shows the customer a "paid insurance" item that is really a refundable hold. Always check whether a money field is a charge or a hold.

3. Insurance is not one field. Some suppliers return selectable cover levels, some return a fixed text, some return nothing at all. The UI has to handle all three without looking broken.

4. Car class is a guess. Some suppliers send an ACRISS/SIPP code, some a free-text category, some only a model name. If you want an "economy" filter you have to build your own rules and say so when you publish numbers.

5. Availability is optimistic. Search results can include cars that are marked full for the dates, or whose booking endpoint refuses the request. Test a real booking flow before you show a supplier's cars as bookable.

6. Booking permissions differ. Many APIs give read-only keys first and write access later. Plan for a "coming soon" state where the cars are listed but booking stays off.

7. Terms and conditions live somewhere else. Age limits, mileage, fuel policy and cross-border rules are often only on the supplier's website. Showing a clean summary of them before payment saves a lot of support emails.

If you build travel or marketplace integrations, I'd be glad to compare notes in the comments.

More about the project: https://cheapcarent.com/
