Every couple of weeks someone asks "is Upwork dead?" or "when's the best time to apply?" and the answers are mostly vibes. I run a small tool that pings new Upwork jobs to Telegram, so I had a month of fresh posts sitting there. Figured I'd just count.

Quick note on the data: it's 96,028 new jobs my tool (flconsole) saw between 13 Sep and 13 Oct 2026. Not an official Upwork number. Times are US Eastern.

 TL;DR

~3,200 new jobs a day. ~3,700 on weekdays, ~2,200 on weekends.

Busiest hour: 1 pm ET. Busiest slot of the week: Tue 11 am ET.

60% are hourly. Typical hourly range is $10–25. Half of fixed-price jobs are $100 or less.

39% of jobs come from clients who've never hired anyone.

 Is Upwork dead?

Nope. 3,200 a day on average, and the busiest day (Wed, 7 Oct) had 4,185. Tue and Wed are the big ones at ~4,000 each. Fri drops to ~3,100, Sun to ~2,100.

Weekends are slower, not empty. 2k+ jobs a day is still plenty to dig through.

When do jobs actually get posted?

US business hours, basically. It ramps up in the morning, peaks at 1 pm ET, and dies off in the evening. The quietest hour (1 am ET) gets 2.3x fewer jobs than the peak.

The heatmap is more useful. Mon–Thu, 10 am – 3 pm ET is the hot zone, up to ~245 jobs an hour. Single busiest slot: Tue 11 am ET, ~246 an hour. Sat/Sun nights are dead at 55–75.

Peaks shift a bit by niche:

Design & Creative: Wed 1 pm

Sales & Marketing: Tue 11 am

Dev: Tue 12 pm

Admin Support: Thu 11 am

Engineering: Wed 2 pm

Outside the US? 1 pm ET is 17:00 UTC right now, so 10:30 pm in India, 10 pm in Pakistan. US clocks change on 1 Nov, add an hour after that.

What kind of work is out there?

Three categories are two thirds of everything: Design & Creative (27%), Sales & Marketing (23%), Dev (18%).

The surprising part: digital marketing (12.9%) and video (12.5%) each have about twice as many jobs as all of web dev (6.2%). Top skills are graphic design and video editing, each in almost 1 job out of 10.

 What does it pay?

Hourly jobs post a range, and the typical one is $10–25/hr. About 1 in 10 goes up to $60+ at the top. Fixed-price is mostly small: half are $100 or less, a quarter are $25 or less.

And what clients actually paid on past contracts is lower than what they post: median $13.40/hr.

Niche matters a lot (top of the hourly range, median):

Category

Share of jobs

Hourly (top)

Fixed budget

IT & Networking

1.9%

$45

$140

Data Science

2.6%

$38

$100

Writing

3.5%

$35

$90

Design & Creative

27.3%

$30

$90

Dev

17.9%

$30

$150

Sales & Marketing

22.7%

$20

$120

Admin Support

8.7%

$12

$55

Customer Service

2.2%

$11

$50

So the biggest categories aren't the best paid. Also only 11% of jobs are entry level, and those are the only ones that are mostly fixed-price.

Which clients are worth your Connects?

This is the part I'd actually care about.

59% of jobs: verified payment + has hired before. The good ones.

16%: verified payment, no hires yet.

23%: payment not verified (and almost all of those have zero hires too).

31% of jobs come from accounts that joined in the last 30 days.

Median client hire rate: 34%.

US clients post 42% of jobs, then UK (8%), India (6%), Australia (5%), Canada (5%).

 What I'd do with this

Apply on weekdays, 10 am – 3 pm ET if you can. Tue/Wed are the busiest.

Don't skip weekends. Fewer jobs, probably fewer people applying too.

Check the client first. Verified payment + at least one hire cuts the list to ~59% of jobs and saves Connects.

Price against your niche, not "Upwork average". $11 vs $45 is a real gap.

Read fixed-price scope carefully. Half are $100 or less.

 Quick answers

How many jobs get posted on Upwork per day? About 3,200 on average (13 Sep – 13 Oct 2026, 96,028 jobs): ~3,700 on weekdays, ~2,200 on weekends.

Best time to apply on Upwork? Weekdays 10 am – 3 pm ET. Peak hour is 1 pm ET (17:00 UTC), peak slot is Tue 11 am ET.

Average hourly rate on Upwork? The typical hourly job asks $10–25. It ranges from ~$11 (customer service) to ~$45 (IT & Networking) at the top of the range.

How many Upwork clients never hired anyone? 39% of new jobs. 59% come from clients with verified payment and past hires.

Full data with all the charts (updated monthly) is here: Upwork jobs in 2026. Feel free to use the numbers, just link back.

Curious if this matches your niche. When do your best clients usually post?
