Understanding React DOM: The Bridge Between React and the Browser

If you've worked with React, you've probably used
ReactDOM
many times. But what exactly does it do behind the scenes?

In this article, we'll explore React DOM, how it works, why it's important, and how it efficiently updates your web applications.

  What is React DOM?

React DOM is a package that acts as a bridge between React components and the browser's Document Object Model (DOM).

React itself is responsible for creating and managing components, while React DOM is responsible for rendering those components into the browser.

Think of it this way:

React → Creates and manages UI components.

React DOM → Displays those components in the browser.

Without React DOM, your React application would have no way to render content on a web page.

  Installing React DOM

When you create a React application using tools like Vite or Create React App, React DOM is usually installed automatically.

npm install react react-dom

  Rendering a React Application

Modern React applications use the
createRoot()
API introduced in React 18.

import React from "react";
import ReactDOM from "react-dom/client";
import App from "./App";

const root = ReactDOM.createRoot(
  document.getElementById("root")
);

root.render(<App />);

  What's happening here?

React finds the HTML element with the ID
root
.

React DOM creates a root container.

React renders the
App
component into that container.

The browser displays the UI.

  The Virtual DOM

One of React's biggest advantages is the Virtual DOM.

Instead of directly updating the browser DOM every time something changes, React:

Creates a lightweight copy of the DOM in memory.

Compares the new Virtual DOM with the previous one.

Finds only the changed elements.

Updates only those specific parts in the real DOM.

This process is called Reconciliation.

  Example

function Counter() {
  const [count, setCount] = React.useState(0);

  return (
    <div>
      <h1>{count}</h1>
      <button onClick={() => setCount(count + 1)}>
        Increment
      </button>
    </div>
  );
}

When the button is clicked:

React updates the state.

A new Virtual DOM is created.

React compares it with the old Virtual DOM.

Only the
<h1>
value changes in the real DOM.

The entire page is not re-rendered.

  Why React DOM is Fast

React DOM improves performance through:

  1. Virtual DOM Diffing

React compares previous and current Virtual DOM trees to identify minimal changes.

  2. Batched Updates

Multiple state updates are grouped together before rendering.

setCount(count + 1);
setName("Sachin");
setTheme("dark");

Instead of rendering three times, React may render only once.

  3. Efficient Reconciliation

React updates only the elements that actually changed.

  Common React DOM APIs

  createRoot()

Creates a React root for rendering.

const root = ReactDOM.createRoot(
  document.getElementById("root")
);

  render()

Renders React components.

root.render(<App />);

  unmount()

Removes a React application from the DOM.

root.unmount();

  React DOM vs Traditional DOM Manipulation

  Vanilla JavaScript

document.getElementById("title").innerText =
  "Hello World";

  React

function App() {
  return <h1>Hello World</h1>;
}

With React, developers describe what the UI should look like, while React DOM determines how to efficiently update the browser.

  React DOM in Real-World Applications

React DOM powers:

Dashboards

E-commerce websites

Social media platforms

SaaS applications

Admin panels

Real-time applications

Popular products built with React rely heavily on React DOM's rendering engine to provide smooth and responsive user experiences.

  Best Practices

  Use Keys in Lists

{
  users.map((user) => (
    <li key={user.id}>{user.name}</li>
  ));
}

Keys help React identify elements efficiently.

  Avoid Direct DOM Manipulation

Instead of:

document.getElementById("input").value = "";

Use React state:

const [value, setValue] = useState("");

  Keep Components Small

Smaller components are easier for React to manage and optimize.

  Conclusion

React DOM is the layer that connects React components to the browser. It handles rendering, updates, reconciliation, and performance optimizations through the Virtual DOM.

By understanding how React DOM works, you'll write more efficient React applications and better understand what happens behind the scenes when your UI updates.

Whether you're building a simple counter app or a large-scale SaaS platform, React DOM is the engine that brings your React components to life in the browser.
