Data classification is a crucial step in organizing and utilizing information effectively, especially in AI-driven applications. With Stof, developers can seamlessly classify and structure incoming data using built-in schema functions. In this example, we’ll walk through how Stof can automatically assign color classifications to t-shirt records based on hex values or color names.

The Problem: Identifying T-Shirt Colors

Imagine you're processing product data, and a t-shirt record comes in with only a single color field. This value could be a color name or a hex code, but to make it useful for AI models or analytics, you need a standardized classification.

The Stof Solution: Schema-Based Classification

Using Stof’s schema and schemify functions, we can dynamically classify colors as data flows in. Here’s how it works:

Preloading a Color Dataset – A comprehensive list of color names and their corresponding hex values is stored efficiently in a compiled binary format.
Converting Colors – A function converts hex codes into RGB values to find the closest matching color in our dataset.
Applying Meta-Code for Classification – As each t-shirt record is processed, Stof automatically assigns a standardized color name based on the closest RGB match. If a name is provided instead of a hex value, it appends the corresponding hex code instead.

How It Works in Action

Running this through Stof’s CLI (or embedding it in an application) demonstrates its efficiency. Given a hex code, Stof finds the closest color match and updates the record. For example:

Input: Hex Code for Light Blue → Output: "Aquamarine"
Input: "Lime" → Output: Hex Code for Lime Green

This logic runs efficiently via WebAssembly, making it highly performant across different environments.

🚀 We Just Launched Stof – An Open-Source Project to Simplify Data Handling!

We’re Amelia and CJ from Formata, and we just launched Stof, an open-source project designed to make data handling easier, safer, and more efficient for developers and data engineers.

**Our Story
**We have been working on this project for about 6 months, and both left our jobs to be full-time. We started this because we realized that the way we work with data hasn't fundamentally changed in about 20 years and we felt that needed to change with the increased use of AI. This project was made out of necessity, because while working at a previous company we had to make it easier to work with many different types of graphics formats. We realized that this could also be done with different types of data more widely being used with AI today.

**What is Stof?
**Stof provides a unified data interface that simplifies validation, transformation, orchestration, structuring, and access control—turning data into a sandboxed runtime that can perform logic anywhere. Our goal is to eliminate the pain of managing messy data pipelines, making development more productive and scalable. Think of Stof as a more dynamic JSON document :)

**Why Open Source?
**We believe that the best developer tools are built with community collaboration. By open-sourcing Stof, we want to create something that grows with input from developers, data engineers, and builders like you.
