Introduction

Hi everyone, my name is Andy. I'm an early career software engineer who is hoping to work in databases one of these days. I also have interest in developing beautiful apps.

My first company I worked for I worked a lot in legacy C++ so I felt as though my skills became rather stale very fast. Currently I'm working at a place where I also don't feel as though my career is developing in the way that I would like, so I'm starting to put in more effort into doing side projects and forcing my way into the world of databases.

Is there anyone here who works in (or wants to work in) databases? Let's chat!

 Big Picture Goals

I want to expand my portfolio, work on side projects, essentially. I want to build a lot of small things. But I also want to have 1-2 big things to be able to show off to recruiters and future employers. Currently, I have nothing I really feel proud to show off, so I'd like to change that.

I'd like to switch jobs 6-12 months from now.

My roommate actually asked me the other day to help him make a website for his small business, so that might be a good opportunity to create that thing I want to show off. I was thinking about using it as an opportunity to learn React/ExpressJS but I'm not sure if that's overkill or not... I could probably just as easily make his site using a static site generator like Jekyll.

Let me know your thoughts!

 Weekly Goals

My deliverables for this week are:

Weekly update on dev.to (check!)

Watch one CMU databases lecture (I'm on lecture 2 now)

Write a quick synopsis of the lecture and post it on dev.to

Stretch Goals:

Start the homework 1 for the databases course

Make a small ExpressJS website and post it on dev.to with some notes on what I learned!

Solve the first LeetCode Database question
