How to Trace and Debug Python AI Agents Without Adding Observability Dependencies

AI agents can fail in ways that ordinary Python applications rarely do.

A function may execute successfully while the overall agent completes the wrong task. A tool call may return an error that the agent handles poorly. A workflow may take far longer than expected. An agent may repeatedly perform operations, consume unnecessary model credits, or stop producing useful results without making the underlying problem obvious.

When debugging a conventional application, developers can often follow a predictable execution path. AI agents are more complicated: their behavior can depend on model outputs, tool responses, intermediate decisions, and the state of a workflow.

You need to see what happened during execution before you can understand why an agent behaved the way it did.

That's the problem Python AI-agent tracing is designed to address.

Seven Trace is an open-source tracing runtime and command-line tool built to make the execution of Python AI agents easier to inspect, without requiring a third-party tracing dependency.

This article explains why tracing matters, what developers should look for when debugging agent workflows, and where a lightweight local tracing tool fits into the Python AI development process.

Why debugging AI agents is different from debugging ordinary Python code

Consider a Python agent that receives a task, calls a tool, processes the result, and produces a final response.

The final response is incorrect.

You know the outcome is wrong, but several things could have happened:

The agent's initial reasoning led it in the wrong direction.

A tool call failed or returned unexpected data.

An exception occurred inside a function.

One operation took significantly longer than expected.

The workflow continued when it should have stopped.

The application completed without raising an exception, but still produced an incorrect result.

Looking only at the final output doesn't tell you which explanation is correct.

Looking only at whether the program crashed isn't enough either. A workflow can finish successfully from Python's perspective while failing to accomplish its intended task.

This is why developers need more than application logs and occasional print statements. They need a way to inspect execution: which operations ran, how long they took, and whether they completed or raised exceptions.

Tracing provides that additional visibility.

What is tracing in a Python AI agent?

Tracing records information about the execution of an application so developers can inspect what happened.

Depending on the tracing implementation, that information may include:

The function or operation being executed.

Execution duration.

Whether execution succeeded or failed.

Exceptions raised during execution.

The sequence of instrumented operations.

For an AI agent, this information can help narrow down where a workflow became slow, encountered an exception, or behaved differently from expectations.

Tracing does not automatically explain every model decision. It also cannot guarantee that an agent's answer is correct. Its purpose is to make the observable execution easier to investigate.

For example, imagine an agent workflow with three stages:

Retrieve information.

Process the retrieved information.

Generate a final result.

If the second stage repeatedly raises an exception, tracing can help you identify that stage instead of investigating the entire application blindly.

If the stages complete but the workflow takes too long, execution-duration information can help you decide where to investigate next.

The result is a more systematic debugging process.

The problem with adding another observability dependency

Many development teams already use logging, profiling tools, hosted observability platforms, or OpenTelemetry-based instrumentation.

These tools can be valuable, especially when applications run in production, span multiple services, or need centralized monitoring.

However, developers experimenting with a small Python agent may want a simpler starting point.

They may not want to configure an external service before they can inspect a local workflow. They may prefer to avoid introducing another third-party package for a small debugging task. They may simply want to run an agent, inspect what happened, and return to writing code.

This is the problem a lightweight local tracing approach aims to solve.

A zero-dependency tracing runtime can reduce setup requirements by relying on Python's standard library rather than requiring additional third-party tracing packages.

That does not mean every observability platform is unnecessarily complicated, or that a local tracing tool can replace production monitoring. The appropriate choice depends on the application and the information a team needs.

For local development, however, a smaller tool can be a practical option.

  Introducing Severn Trace

Severn Trace is an open-source project focused on tracing Python AI-agent execution.

Its design emphasizes three things:

1. Minimal setup

The runtime is designed around Python's standard library, avoiding third-party tracing dependencies in the tracing implementation.

2. Execution visibility

The tracing workflow helps developers inspect instrumented function execution, including timing and exceptions.

3. A local developer workflow

Trace information can be recorded locally and inspected through the project's command-line interface, rather than requiring every debugging session to begin with a hosted observability service.

The Python distribution is named
severn-trace
, and the command-line interface is named
severn
.

You can explore the source code, installation instructions, and current implementation in the Severn Trace GitHub repository.

A simple example: tracing a Python function

One way to introduce tracing into a Python application is to instrument a function whose execution you want to inspect.

Seven Trace provides a
@trace
decorator for this purpose.

For example:

from severn import trace

@trace
def process_agent_task(task: str) -> str:
    if not task.strip():
        raise ValueError("Task cannot be empty")

    return f"Processed task: {task}"

result = process_agent_task("Inspect the retrieved information")
print(result)

This example demonstrates where tracing can be applied: around a function that forms part of a larger agent workflow.

The function validates its input and raises an exception when the task is empty. With tracing applied, you can use the project's supported trace-recording and inspection workflow to investigate execution.

The decorator does not make the function's logic correct, and it does not repair an exception. Instead, tracing helps make execution behavior easier to inspect.

For a real AI agent, the same general approach can be useful around functions responsible for retrieving information, processing tool results, or coordinating workflow stages.

Always consult the repository's current documentation for the exact supported API and output format.

What should you look for when inspecting agent traces?

Recording trace data is only useful if it helps answer real debugging questions.

Here are four situations where execution tracing can help.

  1. Finding where an exception occurs

Suppose an agent completes several operations before raising an exception.

Without useful execution records, you may have to reproduce the failure and add more logging to narrow down the responsible function.

Trace records can help identify which instrumented operation failed and provide a more useful starting point for investigation.

You will still need to inspect the exception and application logic to determine the underlying cause.

  2. Investigating slow operations

An agent workflow may contain several functions, each contributing to its total execution time.

Recording execution durations can help you identify operations worth investigating.

For example, if one instrumented function takes considerably longer than the others, you can inspect that function before attempting to optimize the entire workflow.

Keep in mind that a Python function's duration may include time spent waiting for a network response or another external operation. A trace can identify where time was spent without necessarily explaining why.

  3. Investigating repeated operations

An agent may execute a function more often than expected.

This can happen because of retry logic, loops, tool orchestration, or application-level control flow.

Execution records can help you investigate repeated operations and determine whether the behavior is intentional.

They do not, by themselves, establish that a model is wasting tokens or credits. To calculate actual model usage and cost, you also need reliable token and pricing information from the relevant model provider or application.

  4. Separating successful execution from correct results

A function can complete without an exception and still produce an incorrect result.

This distinction matters when debugging AI applications.

Tracing helps developers investigate execution, but evaluating the quality of an agent's answer requires additional checks, such as tests, expected-output comparisons, or task-specific evaluations.

A useful debugging workflow combines execution visibility with tests and application-level validation.

Seven Trace vs. OpenTelemetry and full observability platforms

Seven Trace occupies a narrower space than a full observability platform.

Capability

Severn Trace

OpenTelemetry

Full observability platform

Primary role

Lightweight local tracing for Python workflows

Vendor-neutral instrumentation and telemetry standards

Monitoring and investigating applications across services

Setup philosophy

Minimal, local-first workflow

Instrumentation and exporters configured for the chosen environment

Varies by product and deployment

Third-party dependencies

Designed to avoid third-party tracing dependencies in its runtime

Python implementations commonly use SDKs and instrumentation packages

Varies by platform

Centralized dashboards

Use the capabilities currently provided by the project

Usually connected to an appropriate backend for visualization and analysis

Commonly a core feature

Best fit

Developers who want a lightweight way to inspect local agent execution

Teams that need portable telemetry across compatible tools and backends

Teams needing broader monitoring, alerting, and production visibility

These approaches are not necessarily competitors.

OpenTelemetry provides a vendor-neutral framework for generating and exporting telemetry. A platform such as Datadog can provide a broader observability experience built around metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and other capabilities.

Severn Trace's potential advantage is its focused, lightweight workflow for inspecting Python agent execution locally.

It should not be treated as a complete replacement for distributed tracing, centralized monitoring, alerting, or production incident management.

The right choice depends on what you are building.

Does tracing make an AI agent self-healing?

Not by itself.

This distinction is important.

Tracing helps developers observe execution and investigate failures. A self-healing system would need additional behavior: detecting a problem, determining an appropriate response, applying a correction or recovery strategy, and verifying that the recovery worked.

For example, an application might use trace information alongside retry policies, validation, structured error handling, or an automated recovery process.

But recording an exception is not the same as correcting it.

A useful tracing layer can support the development of more reliable agents by making failures easier to investigate. Whether an application can automatically recover depends on the recovery logic implemented around it.

That is why observability is an important part of agent reliability, even though it is not the whole solution.

Try Seven Trace in your Python project

If you are building Python AI agents and want to investigate execution without starting with a large observability setup, Severn Trace is worth exploring.

Start with a small workflow rather than instrumenting your entire application immediately.

Identify a function that is important to the agent's execution.

Add tracing using the supported API.

Run the workflow under normal conditions.

Inspect the available trace records.

Trigger a controlled failure and compare the results.

Investigate any unexpected duration or repeated execution.

This gives you a practical way to evaluate whether the tool provides the visibility you need.

Project resources

GitHub repository: Severn Trace — source code, current documentation, and installation instructions.

Python package:
severn-trace
.

Command-line interface:
severn
.

See the project's repository for the current installation command, supported Python versions, usage instructions, and known limitations.

  Final thoughts

AI-agent debugging becomes harder when a workflow contains multiple operations, external tools, and model-dependent behavior.

Developers need to distinguish between a function that failed, a workflow that ran slowly, and an agent that completed execution but produced the wrong result.

Tracing helps provide that visibility.

Severn Trace takes a lightweight, local-first approach to Python AI-agent tracing, with an emphasis on minimizing setup and avoiding third-party tracing dependencies in its runtime.

It is not a substitute for every production observability system, and tracing alone does not make an agent self-healing. Its value is more specific: helping developers inspect execution and find better starting points for debugging.

If you are building Python agents, explore Seven Trace, test it against a real workflow, and decide whether its approach fits your development process.

Severn - How a Tiny Open-Source CLI Saved My AI Agent Project at 2:00 AM

It was 2:00 AM, our team’s autonomous multi-agent pipeline kept crashing into an infinite loop, and I was about ready to throw my laptop out the window.

We were building an AI research agent for an upcoming hackathon, and everything was working until our custom tool call started throwing a silent error. The agent would receive a malformed response from an API, panic silently, and lock up our entire script. Worse, our terminal output gave us nothing useful—just a messy wall of unhelpful stack traces.

Someone in our team chat suggested we install an enterprise APM monitoring tool or set up complex telemetry collectors to trace the execution steps. But looking at the documentation—requiring cloud dashboard accounts, environment variables, API tokens, and heavy third-party dependencies—felt like bringing a bulldozer to fix a broken door lock. We didn't have time to configure enterprise infrastructure. We just needed to know where the code broke.

That’s when I stumbled upon a brand-new, zero-dependency Python package: Seven Trace.

  Stumbling Upon a Hidden Gem

At first, I didn't expect much. The project promised a lightweight, pure Python tracing runtime with zero external dependencies and a built-in terminal CLI. Skeptical but desperate, I opened my terminal and installed it instantly via PyPI using
pip install severn-trace
.

Because it relies entirely on the Python standard library with no heavy sub-dependencies to slow things down, it installed in less than a second.

Fixing our debugging nightmare took almost zero configuration. By placing a simple trace decorator over our crashing agent tool function, we didn't need YAML configuration files, background collector daemons, or remote server endpoints.

Instant Visibility Right in the Terminal

When we re-ran our agent script, Seven Trace silently captured the execution duration, caught the exception payload, and wrote a clean structured log directly to a local fallback file on our machine.

Even better, running the global command
severn
launched a gorgeous, interactive terminal dashboard right in our shell. Without opening a single browser tab or logging into a cloud dashboard, we could instantly see our total local telemetry records, audit caught agent loop failures, and review execution health in real time.

It gave us the deep diagnostic visibility we desperately needed without adding a single ounce of overhead to our local development environment.

Why Every Builder Needs This in Their Toolkit

We ended up fixing our agent bug before 3:00 AM, and our project ran smoothly all the way to the finish line.

If you’re building autonomous AI agents—whether for a hackathon, a startup prototype, or a personal project—stop wasting time wrestling with bloated monitoring tools. You don't need heavy enterprise software to debug a local script. You just need clean code, fast feedback, and zero friction.

If you haven't checked it out yet, you can easily install the package from PyPI (
pip install severn-trace
), check out the source code on the GitHub repository (github.com/davidamadie06/severn-trace), or connect with the community via Discord (
@severnteam
).

It’s a massive time-saver for any developer building serious AI systems on a tight schedule!
