Organizing meetups to landing developer advocacy role

Conversation with Rob Axelsen about his journey of landing developer advocacy role from organizing community meetup events in Vienna, Austria.

  Takeaway from the conversation

The best place to transition into the devRel role is within the organization itself.

Understand the job requirements and tailor your resume and interview to demonstrate relevant and valuable experience to the role.

Highlight your public speaking links on your resume and make them relevant for the roles;

Pin the projects you are proud of on GitHub.

Include links to your blogging or writing samples as well.

Continuously look for devRel openings and expose yourself to more opportunities and meet more people.

Apply even if it’s not 100% match. DevRel hiring is about finding the best fit on both sides; it depends on many factors like technology and team composition.

Depending on your background, the devRel team can create a new role that fits best with your background. In Rob’s case, he asked for a developer advocate role instead of a community manager role because job responsibilities are close to developer advocate and Rob wants to move in the developer advocate role.

  Contribution to open source doesn’t have to be only code; it can be

Contribute to documentation

Reporting issues

Triage issues

Daily blogging allowed Rob to discover his voice and conversation style writing.

  How does running Meetup skills help in the current role?

Drive things and build an internal community for Design system Barista ,

Talking to people for collaboration of new ideas.

Project management skills

Techniques and tips to land Frontend intern job after Bootcamp with Michelle Liebheit

  Takeaway from the conversation

Keep coding; some people stop coding. You need to practice and polish your case study projects for the interviews.

Do mock interviews with your friends and cohort group.
Have an accountability group with your 2 to 3 cohort job seekers: Run daily status updates and share your progress.

A couple of good projects are enough to start a job hunt and show your skill. You don't need 10 projects to start looking for a job.

Increase your learning
a. Volunteer your time.
b. Look for freelance work.
c. Building websites for the Figma design - Frontend mentors and Frontend practice.

Identify top skills required for the job. You don't have to match all the 100% job requirements; you can still apply for the job.

Show consistency on your GitHub projects. It can give a good impression.

Use LinkedIn efficiently.
Example: Post your learnings, engage in the conversation, and reach out to people for networking(ask an expert for tips and understand their tech journey, reach out to previous colleagues).
Have the flow, don't have a gap, stay consistent, keep applying.

Don't feel bad. Be ready for many rejections and it is common.

  Apply for Frontend internship or Junior Frontend role?

Ignore the years of experience asked in the Job description. If your skills matches, Apply. Sometimes, companies say you are not meeting the job description but can consider you for a trainee or internship role.

  Company cultural fit matters

Don't look for the best company or opportunity; instead, look for culture fit and good mentorship. It's your opportunity to learn and feel supportive. Then, grow within the company.

Bootcamp projects are not real-life work experiences; you will learn a lot. But, in actual projects on the job, you will have more time to reflect on your code and collaborate with the team.

Keep coding, build community and network.

Do you have any favorite techniques do you like to recommend?
Let me know in the comments.

Why Chakra UI design systems is popular. What lessons can you learn from it?

When writing this blog post, chakra UI has 488 K monthly downloads with 20.4k Github starts. So I took a deep dive into what makes it great. Here are my key takeaways.

  Time for value

You can see UI components in action on the landing page of Chakra UI; You don't need a special setup to test it. Chakra UI.

  Onboarding

The great getting started guide is from the Frontend developer perspective, not only talks about the import Chakra UI components and installs the dependency. In addition, it explains how to use Chakra UI with the most commonly used Reactjs bootstrapping solutions -
create-react-app
,
Next.js
and
Gatsby
.

It comes with getting started video as well. I prefer video tutorials to get started examples, and I can watch with 2x speed.

  Developer experience

In addition to UI components, it also gives you the Hooks for managing Ui components functionality, making it developer more efficient. Chakra UI hooks

  // Detect dark theme
  var iframe = document.getElementById('tweet-1429097365563052034-562');
  if (document.body.className.includes('dark-theme')) {
    iframe.src = "https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?id=1429097365563052034&theme=dark"
  }

  Community

You are not alone, a massive community behind it. With great sponsors and contributors. Chakra UI team

Do you know any other design systems you like with excellent developer experience?
