How I Built a Free Pet Age Calculator for 22 Species (and Why the 7-Year Rule Is Wrong)

Most people think one dog year equals seven human years. That's wrong — and veterinary science has known it for decades.

I built Animal Calculator Online to fix this. It's a free pet age calculator that covers 22 species using scientific longevity curves, not oversimplified rules.

The problem with the 7-year rule

The multiply-by-7 formula has no scientific basis. Dogs age rapidly in their first two years and then slow down. A 1-year-old dog is already equivalent to a 15-year-old human. By year 2, they're around 24. After that, the rate depends heavily on size and breed.

A small dog of 10 years has 56 human years. A large dog of the same age has 66. That difference matters for their health care, diet and exercise needs.

 What the calculator covers

Dogs (small, medium, large)

Cats

Rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, chinchillas

Budgies, canaries, lovebirds, parrots

Tortoises, turtles, iguanas, leopard geckos, bearded dragons

Goldfish, betta fish, guppies, neon tetras

Each species has its own non-linear aging curve based on veterinary and longevity research.
