Most hiring horror stories look the same: the work arrives late or not at all, the result is not what you imagined, or the freelancer disappears after the first payment. Almost all of them can be prevented before the project starts. Here is a practical checklist for first-time clients.

 1. Write the task down before you message anyone

One page is enough: what you need, what finished looks like, the deadline, and the budget range. Vague briefs produce vague results and arguments about whether the work is done.

 2. Split the project into milestones

Instead of one big payment at the end, break the work into two to five pieces, each with a clear, testable definition of done. If a milestone cannot be checked in a few minutes, it is too big.

 3. Start with a small paid test

Before committing a large budget, give a small, real piece of work first. It shows how the person communicates, how they handle feedback, and whether deadlines mean anything to them.

 4. Fund each milestone before work begins

Release the money only after you approve the result. This protects both sides: the freelancer knows the budget is real, and you know you pay only for work you accepted. An escrow or platform hold is the simplest way to do this.

 5. Agree on revisions and review time in writing

How many rounds of changes are included, and how many days do you have to review a delivery? Without this, projects drift for weeks.

 6. Keep everything on the record

Keep the brief, files and decisions in one place, not scattered across chats. If something goes wrong, a clear trail makes it easy to resolve fairly.

 7. Check signals, not promises

Look at past work that resembles your task, ask one specific question about your problem, and notice whether the answer is concrete.

Hiring well is mostly about structure, not luck. A clear brief, small milestones and funded stages remove most of the risk.

Disclosure: I am Anna from the Freelance Club team. We are opening fwork.club, a new freelance marketplace built around this idea: payment is held until the client approves the work. It is early, and I would love feedback from people who hire freelancers.
