Introduction

Security is an essential part of every modern web application. Whether users are accessing an online shopping platform, a banking application, or a personal dashboard, they expect their accounts and information to remain protected. A well-designed authentication system helps applications verify user identities and control access to protected resources.

Python and Django REST Framework (DRF) provide useful tools for developing authentication APIs. By integrating JSON Web Tokens (JWT), developers can implement token-based authentication for applications that communicate through REST APIs.

 Understanding the Authentication Workflow

An authentication system involves more than checking a username and password. It includes several connected processes that help protect user accounts throughout their lifecycle.

User registration and password security: During registration, users provide details such as a username, email address, and password. Passwords should never be stored as plain text. Django provides built-in password-hashing functionality that helps protect credentials stored in the database.

Email verification: Email verification helps confirm that users can access the email addresses they provide. An application can keep newly registered accounts inactive until verification is completed using a valid verification token.

JWT-based login: After successful authentication, the server can issue an access token and a refresh token. The access token is used to authorize requests to protected endpoints, while the refresh token can help obtain new access tokens according to the application's token policy. Configuring token expiration is important because it limits how long an access token remains valid.

Protected API endpoints: Authentication mechanisms allow developers to restrict sensitive endpoints. When a request arrives, the application validates the provided credentials and determines whether access should be granted. Requests without valid authentication credentials should be rejected.

Password recovery: Users sometimes forget their passwords. A password-reset workflow allows them to request a recovery link and establish a new password after the reset token has been validated. Reset tokens should be time-limited, and the new password should be validated before it is saved securely.

 Practical Implementation and Testing

While developing an Authentication System using Python, Django REST Framework, and Simple JWT, I gained practical experience with registration, email verification, token generation, protected APIs, and password recovery.

Postman was useful for testing API requests and checking responses under different conditions. Testing successful login, incorrect credentials, missing tokens, and password-reset requests helped me understand how APIs behave in both successful and unsuccessful scenarios.

For production applications, additional considerations include HTTPS, secure email delivery, appropriate token lifetimes, rate limiting, and safe management of secrets.

 Conclusion

Developing an authentication API is a valuable way to understand backend development and application security. Combining Django REST Framework with JWT provides a practical foundation for building authenticated REST APIs, while email verification and password recovery improve the overall account-management experience.

This project strengthened my understanding of secure password handling, authentication workflows, API testing, and backend development.

Building CRUD REST APIs with Django REST Framework

REST APIs are an important part of modern web development because they allow different applications and services to communicate with each other. During my internship work, I explored how to build a REST API using Django REST Framework (DRF) and implemented CRUD operations for managing tasks.

CRUD stands for Create, Read, Update, and Delete. These four operations form the foundation of many applications that store and manage data. In a task management API, for example, users can create a new task, view existing tasks, update task details, and delete tasks when they are no longer required.

Django REST Framework makes API development easier by providing serializers, views, authentication, permissions, and other useful features. I used Django models to define the structure of task data and serializers to convert model instances into JSON data that can be easily understood by frontend applications and other clients.

The API provides different HTTP methods for performing operations. A POST request can be used to create a task, GET can retrieve tasks, PUT or PATCH can update an existing task, and DELETE can remove a task. Proper HTTP status codes such as 200, 201, 400, 401, and 404 help clients understand whether a request was successful or encountered an error.

Authentication is another important part of a REST API. Protected endpoints should not be accessible to unauthorized users. In my implementation, token-based authentication was used so that users could log in and access protected task operations using an authentication token.

During the development process, I also learned the importance of input validation and proper error handling. Testing different API requests helped me understand how the server responds to valid and invalid data. The Django REST Framework browsable API was useful for checking endpoints, request methods, responses, and authentication.

This project gave me practical experience in backend development and helped me understand how different components of a REST API work together. I gained a better understanding of Django models, serializers, API views, authentication, CRUD operations, validation, and HTTP status codes.

I also documented the API endpoints and their expected requests and responses so that the project would be easier for other developers to understand and use.

Read the full article:
https://valentiuskryptix.com/how-to-build-crud-operations-using-django-rest-framework/

Key Takeaways

Learned how to create CRUD operations using Django REST Framework.

Understood serializers, API views, authentication, and validation.

Practiced testing REST API endpoints and handling HTTP status codes.

Overall, this project helped me strengthen my backend development skills and understand how REST APIs are designed, secured, tested, and used in real-world applications.
