I couldn’t quit cold turkey, so I started thinking differently about habits

I once visited a quiet town in Victoria, Australia called Halls Gap.

It was one of those postcard-perfect places — mountains, clean air, people just sitting peacefully with coffee or books.

And my first thought was still: I want a cigarette.

That moment stuck with me. Not because I felt judged, but because I realised how automatic the habit still was, even in a place that didn’t need anything added to it.

I’d tried quitting before, but I kept running into the same pattern: I’d do well for a few days, slip once, and then feel like I’d failed completely.

That “all or nothing” mindset made it hard to actually change anything.

Over time, I started wondering if the problem wasn’t just the habit itself, but how I was measuring progress.

I’m still figuring it out, but I’ve been experimenting with a different approach — one that focuses more on gradual reduction and not letting a bad day erase the good ones.

I also tried turning this idea into a small web experiment at stillhere.day, and I’d genuinely love to hear any thoughts or feedback from people here.

I’m sharing this because I’m curious if others have run into the same thing when trying to change habits.

Would love to hear your experiences.
