      <description>&lt;p&gt;Errors in laboratory medicine occur in the preanalytical, analytical, and postanalytical phases. The errors are mostly detected in the preanalytical period. However, analytical errors are still an important source of error, despite their frequency is reduced significantly in years thanks to developments in laboratories. In this case, an analytical error was noticed during the verification of a patient's results. The direct bilirubin of a 66-year-old male patient admitted to the emergency department was higher than the total bilirubin. The patient's symptoms were fatigue and dyspnoea. Albumin and haemoglobin (Hb) concentrations of the patient were significantly low. After considering the patient's demographics and laboratory results, the laboratory specialist suspected a paraproteinemia interference. Total protein was performed as a reflective test. The albumin/globulin ratio was reversed. Thereafter, serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) and immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) were performed as another reflective tests, respectively. SPEP and IFE results were in favour of monoclonal gammopathy. The patient was directed to a haematologist, underwent a bone marrow biopsy, and the result was reported as Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia with plasma cell differentiation expressing IgM-Kappa. The patient went on a chemotherapy protocol, and his condition has been improved in subsequent months. Detection of analytical errors is of great importance, like in our case, and may be used as a tool to identify patients who have not yet been diagnosed. The laboratory specialist must dominate the entire process of each test in the laboratory, be aware of the limitations of tests, and turn these disadvantages into advantages when necessary. &lt;br&gt;
 Fecal calprotectin is a biomarker for monitoring inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) activity. Our aim, therefore, was to evaluate two new assays, the point of care test Quantum Blue and the Liaison Calprotectin with respect to the Calprest, commonly used assay, and to determine their performance for IBD diagnosis. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We included 73 prospective patients with IBD. Fecal calprotectin was measured and analysed with the routine Calprest assay and two recently introduced assays, the Quantum Blue and the Liaison Calprotectin. Furthermore, we compared the results by Bland and Altman analysis, and Passing-Bablok regression. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We observed no difference in median calprotectin values obtained by the Calprest (94.6 µg/g, 95%CI 66.5 to 166.1) and Liaison assay (101.0 µg/g, 95%CI 48.1 to 180.1) whereas significantly higher concentrations were obtained with the Quantum Blue assay (240.0 µg/g, 95%CI 119.9 to 353.2). The mean absolute and relative difference between the Calprest and Quantum Blue methods was statistically significant (- 162.3 µg/g and - 143.1%). Mean absolute difference between the Calprest and Liaison calprotectin methods was positive (2.2 µg/g). The agreement between assays revealed that Quantum Blue and Calprest have fair agreement with Kappa coefficient of 0.38 (95%CI 0.26 to 0.51). Liaison Calprotectin and Calprest revealed moderate agreement with a weak Kappa coefficient of 0.47 (95%CI 0.32 to 0.62). &lt;/p&gt;

 The study aimed to investigate the prevalence and titres of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in children treated at the Children's Hospital Zagreb in the first and the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Statistical significance of difference at two time points was done to determine how restrictive epidemiological measures and exposure of children to COVID-19 infection affect this prevalence in different age groups. &lt;/p&gt;

Herein, we found that there was a significant negative correlation between pVHL and YAP at protein level in the TCGA-LUAD dataset and our cohort. Over-expression of pVHL decreased YAP protein expression and reduced its transcriptional activity. Further study indicated that pVHL did not affect YAP mRNA level but decreased YAP protein stability in a lysosome-dependent manner. In addition, the pVHL-mediated degradation of YAP inhibited cellular proliferation, migration, and enhanced chemosensitivity to cisplatin in lung adenocarcinoma cells. Interestingly, the pVHL-mediated YAP degradation was blocked by elevated O-GlcNAcylation. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that pVHL modulates the lysosomal degradation of YAP, and may provide more clues to better understanding the tumor suppressive effects of pVHL. &lt;br&gt;

Both drugs, under GSH-reduced conditions, significantly decreased relative cellular GSH content by 70% and 34%, respectively, compared with that in cells not pretreated with BSO. Next, we examined the correlation between GSH consumption and covalent binding assays; the results showed good correlation (correlation coefficient = 0.818). We then optimized the test compound concentration for evaluating RM formation potential using 76 validation compound sets, and the highest sensitivity (53%) was observed at 100 μM. The lncRNA research in the field of cancer biology over the past decade reveals that a large number of lncRNAs are dysregulated in various types of cancer and that dysregulated lncRNAs may play important roles in cancer initiation, metastasis and therapeutic responses. Metal carcinogens and other common environmental carcinogens such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, fine particular matters, cigarette smoke, ultraviolet and ionizing radiation are important cancer etiology factors. However, the mechanisms of how metal carcinogens and other common environmental carcinogen exposures initiate cancer and promote cancer progression remain largely unknown. Accumulating evidence show that exposure to metal carcinogens and other common environmental carcinogens dysregulate lncRNA expression in various model systems, which may offer novel mechanistic insights for environmental carcinogenesis. This review will first provide a brief introduction about lncRNA biology and the mechanisms of lncRNA functions, followed by summarizing and discussing recent studies about lncRNA dysregulation by metal carcinogen and other common environment carcinogen exposures and the potential roles of dysregulated lncRNAs in environmental carcinogenesis.       <description>&lt;p&gt;Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is the commonest cause of acute lower respiratory infections (ALRI) in infants. However, the burden of RSV is unknown in Ethiopia. We aimed to determine the prevalence, seasonality and predictors of RSV infection in young infants with ALRI for the first time in Ethiopia. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We performed RSV immuno-chromatographic assay from nasopharyngeal swabs of infants, 29 days to 6 months of age. We included the first 10 eligible infants in each month from June 2018 to May 2019 admitted in a tertiary pediatric center. Clinical, laboratory and imaging data were also collected, and chi-square test and regression were used to assess associated factors with RSV infection. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Among a total of 117 study children, 65% were male and mean age was 3 months. Bronchiolitis was the commonest diagnosis (49%). RSV was isolated from 26 subjects (22.2%) of all ALRI, 37% of bronchiolitis and 11% of pneumonia patients. Although RSV infection occurred year round, highest rate extended from June to November. No clinical or laboratory parameter predicted RSV infection and only rainy season (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) 10.46 [95%.  Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a change in the incidence and transmission of respiratory pathogens was observed. Here, we retrospectively analyzed the impact of COVID-19 on the epidemiologic characteristics of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection among children in Chengdu, one of the largest cities of western China. &lt;/p&gt;

 International air travel plays an important role in the global spread of SARS-CoV-2, and tracing of close contacts is an integral part of the public health response to COVID-19. We aimed to assess the timeliness of contact tracing among airline passengers arriving in Vietnam on flights containing COVID-19 cases and investigated factors associated with timeliness of contact tracing. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We included data from 2228 passengers on 22 incoming flights between 2 and 19 March 2020. Contact tracing duration was assessed separately for the time between the date of index case confirmation and date of contact tracing initiation (interval I), and the date of contact tracing initiation and completion (interval II). We used log-rank tests and multivariable Poisson regression models to identify factors associated with timeliness. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The median duration of interval I and interval II was one (IQR 1-2) and 3 days (IQR 2-5), respectively. The contact tracing duration was shorter for passengers from flights where the index case wa on high workload days. Mandatory SARS-CoV-2 testing at arrival may reduce contact tracing duration and should be considered as an integrated screening tool for flight passengers from high-risk areas when entering low-transmission settings with limited contact tracing capacity. We recommend a standardized risk-based contact tracing approach for flight passengers during the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic. &lt;br&gt;
 Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is the commonest of the hereditary kidney diseasesand mostly ensues in utero with signs delayed until after several decades. This study assessed the demographic, diagnostic (clinical and biochemical features) and therapeutic patterns among ADPKD patients who attended the nephrology unit of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) from 2007 to 2018. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This cross-sectional retrospective analysis of ADPKD patient records was conducted at the nephrology unit of KATH in October 2020. The records of 82 ADPKD was used for this study. Demographic, clinical, biochemical, ultrasonographic and therapeutic datawas obtained, organized and analyzed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;ADPKD was most prevalent in people within the ages of 31-40 years (25.6 %), with a male (52.4 %) preponderance. The most common clinical features presented were flank pain (30.5 %) and bipedal swelling (18.3 %).       <description>&lt;p&gt;Background Dyslipidemia is common in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Sacubitril/valsartan improves insulin sensitivity and augments natriuretic peptide (NP) signaling, providing mechanisms by which sacubitril/valsartan may affect serum lipids. However, empiric data on these effects are lacking. Methods and Results We analyzed 4,744 participants from PARAGON-HF with available screening lipids. During follow-up visits, we analyzed the treatment effect on lipid levels and assessed for interaction by baseline lipid levels. At the 16-week visit, we adjusted these treatment effects for the change in several biomarkers (including hemoglobin A1c and urinary cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)/creatinine [a biomarker of NP activation]). The average age was 73±8 years, 52% were women, 43% had diabetes mellitus, and 64% were on statin therapy. Compared with valsartan, sacubitril/valsartan reduced triglycerides -5.0% (-6.6%, -3.5%), increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) +2.6% (+1.7%, +3.4%), and increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) +1.7% (+0.4%, +3.0%). Sacubitril/valsartan reduced triglycerides most among those with elevated baseline levels (triglycerides≥200 mg/dL) (p-interaction less then 0.001), and at 16-weeks by -13.0% (-18.1%, -7.6%), or -29.9 (-44.3, -15.5) mg/dL, in this group. Adjusting for the change in urinary cGMP/creatinine significantly attenuated treatment effects on triglycerides and HDL-c, but not LDL-c, while adjusting for other biomarkers did not significantly alter the treatment effects. Conclusions Sacubitril/valsartan significantly reduces triglycerides compared with valsartan, an effect that was substantially stronger in those with elevated baseline triglycerides. Modest increases in HDL-c and LDL-c cholesterol were also observed with therapy. The underlying mechanism(s) of changes in HDL-c and triglycerides are related to sacubitril/valsartan's effects on NP activity.Background We evaluated long-term outcome of isolation of pulmonary veins, left atrial posterior wall, and superior vena cava, including time to recurrence and prevalent triggering foci at repeat ablation in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation with or without cardiovascular comorbidities. Methods and Results A total of 1633 consecutive patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation that were arrhythmia-free for 2 years following the index ablation were classified into group 1 (without comorbidities); n=692 and group 2 (with comorbidities); n=941. We excluded patients with documented ablation of areas other than pulmonary veins, the left atrial posterior wall, and the superior vena cava at the index procedure. At 10 years after an average of 1.2 procedures, 215 (31%) and 480 (51%) patients had recurrence with median time to recurrence being 7.4 (interquartile interval [IQI] 4.3-8.5) and 5.6 (IQI 3.8-8.3) years in group 1 and 2, respectively. A total of 201 (93.5%) and 456 (95%) patients from group 1 and 2 underwent redo ablation; 147/201 and 414/456 received left atrial appendage and coronary sinus isolation and 54/201 and 42/456 had left atrial lines and flutter ablation.       <description>&lt;p&gt;The purpose of our study was to assess the use of opioids before and after hip fracture in elderly patients in order to determine the effect of opioid use on all-cause mortality, and to analyze how the history of opioid use before fracture increases the risk of sustained use following hip fracture using a Korea nationwide cohort. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Our study identified hip fracture patients from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Senior cohort. The index date was defined as 90-days after admission to the acute care hospital that fulfilled the eligibility criteria of elderly hip fracture. Patients were classified into past user, current user, and sustained user according to the use of opioid at each period based on the time of admission and index date. The opioids were classified into strong opioids and tramadol. A generalized estimating equation model with a Poisson distribution and logarithmic link function was performed to estimate the adjusted rate ratios (aRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the ent opioid used without past use. &lt;br&gt;

 The aim was to evaluate knowledge, attitudes, and clinical practice concerning medical genetics, genetic testing, and counseling among primary care physicians (PCPs) in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The University of Hong Kong (HKU), HKU-Shenzhen Hospital, and Shenzhen Health Capacity Building and Continuing Education Center invited PCPs from Hong Kong and Shenzhen to participate in an online survey. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The survey was completed by 151 PCPs and 258 PCPs from Hong Kong and Shenzhen, respectively. The majority agreed it was important to keep current with genetics (91%) and that personalized medicine was the future of healthcare (86%), yet only 10% reported that they had postgraduate training in genomic medicine. Seventeen percent of Hong Kong and 40% of Shenzhen's PCPs encountered genetic-related cases in the past 6months, and they identified insufficient knowledge, few training opportunities, and self-rated low confidence in their skillsets as main barriers. &lt;/p&gt;

Appetite sensations better correspond to energy requirements at a high compared with a low energy turnover. Adaptation of energy intake to habitual energy turnover may, however, contribute to the risk of weight gain associated with accelerated growth, pregnancy, detraining in athletes, or after weight loss in people with obesity. The dose-response relationship between energy turnover and energy intake as well as the metabolic effects of energy turnover varies with the habitual level of physical activity and the etiology of energy turnover (e.g., cold-induced thermogenesis, growth, or lactation; aerobic vs. anaerobic exercise). Whether a high energy turnover due to physical activity or exercise may compensate for adverse effects of overfeeding or an unhealthy diet needs to be further investigated using the concept of energy flux. &lt;p&gt;We searched for KCNH2 variants with a minor allele frequency of &amp;lt;5%. Functional analysis in Xenopus laevis oocytes was performed for all KCNH2 variants identified. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;KCNH2 variants were found in 11.1% (10/90) of SUDEP individuals compared to 6.0% (20/332) of epilepsy controls (p=0.11). Loss-of-function KCNH2 variants, defined as causing &amp;gt;20% reduction in maximal amplitude, were observed in 8.9% (8/90) SUDEP patients compared to 3.3% (11/332) epilepsy controls suggesting about threefold enrichment (nominal p=0.04). KCNH2 variants that did not change channel function occurred at a similar frequency in SUDEP (2.2%; 2/90) and epilepsy control (2.7%; 9/332) cohorts (p&amp;gt;0.99). Rare KCNH2 variants (&amp;lt;1% allele frequency) associated with greater loss of function and an ~11-fold enrichment in the SUDEP cohort (nominal p=0.03). In silico tools were unable to predict the impact of a variant on function highlighting the need for electrophysiological analysis. &lt;/p&gt;

      <description>&lt;p&gt;Radiation-induced fibrosis (RIF) is a serious complication that occurs after irradiation and which is caused by the deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins such as collagen. However, the underlying mechanisms, including the expression of the cytokines, that promote the RIF process, are not yet fully understood. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have recently been suggested to act as post-transcriptional repressors for many genes; however, their role in the process of RIF remains to be elucidated. Our previous study showed that ionizing radiation increased the type I collagen expression through the activation of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, while miR-29 repressed this increase. This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms by which the expression of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), a downstream mediator of TGF-β, is controlled by miRNAs post-transcriptionally after exposure to ionizing radiation. The expression of CTGF in NIH-3T3 cells and mouse embryonic fibroblasts was increased by ionizing radiation. However, this increase was suppressed with a specific inhibitor of TGF-β receptor. Among the predictable miRNAs that target the CTGF gene, the expression of miR-26a was downregulated after exposure to ionizing radiation and this regulation was negatively mediated by TGF-β signaling. miR-26a negatively regulated the CTGF expression at the post-transcriptional level; however, ionizing radiation suppressed this negative regulation. In addition, the overexpression of miR-26a inhibited the expression of CTGF and type I collagen after irradiation. In conclusion, miR-26a modulates the expression of CTGF via TGF-β signaling in irradiated fibroblasts. First, we qualitatively analyzed the signal of the cortex of the PL by comparing it with that of the ipsilateral superior frontal gyrus on a 4-point grading score. Second, we compared the cortical signal intensity and gray/white-matter contrast between the PL and superior frontal gyrus. &lt;p&gt;The PL cortex was either mildly hyperintense (grade 2) or definitely hyperintense (grade 3) in comparison with that of superior frontal cortex in all participants. The signal intensity of the PL cortex was significantly higher than that of the superior frontal cortex (p &amp;lt; 0.001), whereas the gray/white-matter contrast of the PL was weaker than that of the superior frontal gyrus (p &amp;lt; 0.001). We present a rare, intradural manifestation of CPPD requiring surgical intervention, with a review of pertinent differential diagnoses on imaging. A 48-year-old male presented with urinary retention, and was found to have an intradural lesion with peripheral enhancement on gadolinium T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Due to the patient's progressive neurological deterioration, he was taken for a minimally invasive approach for resection of the lesion. Histopathological analysis revealed crystal deposits with rhomboidal birefringence consistent with CPPD. The imaging features of this lesion were atypical for any of the traditional intradural extramedullary lesions. Overall ITT prevalence-weighted by district population size-was estimated at 13.7%, where 6.1% was attributable to stamp counterfeiting-that is, a forged stamp not issued by the national tax authority-and 7.6% to contraband smuggling of foreign cigarette packs-that is, illicit trade of packs across national borders. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The ITT problem in Argentina seems to be equally represented by counterfeiting of tobacco tax stamps on packs with domestic features and smuggd products, particularly from Paraguay. Reducing ITT is necessary to ensure the effectiveness of tobacco taxation measures. &lt;br&gt;
 One of the opposing arguments to restricting or banning the sale of tobacco products stem from a perception that this would adversely impact on small retail stores that rely on tobacco sales for viability. It has also been argued that purchases of tobacco leads to unplanned purchasing of other items that yield income for small store owners. This study tested the veracity of these arguments in the Australian context. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Consumer intercept surveys (n=1487) were conducted outside a comprehensive sample of small stores (n=136) selling tobacco in lower socioeconomic suburbs. Data were collected over a 2-hour period outside each store using the same methodology (36% consumer response rate). Descriptive statistics examined the proportion of tobacco and non-tobacco purchases and most common products purchased. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Purchasing tobacco was the primary motivation for store visits for only 3% of consumers. The vast majority of products purchased (92%) were not tobacco, with hot food, groceries and lottery tickets most frequent. Only 8% of consumers purchased tobacco. When unplanned purchasing patterns were compared, consumers' who purchased tobacco were no more likely to buy other products. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Tobacco purchasing was rarely the reason for store visits, indicating that it is not a key driver of consumer foot traffic for small retailers. There was also no evidence that tobacco contributes to spontaneous purchases of other products that might bring retailers profit. Prior to group CBT, 40 individuals with a principal diagnosis of an anxiety disorder (40% panic disorder, 25% generalized anxiety disorder, 22.5% social phobia, and 12.5% others) were randomly assigned to receive either three individual sessions of MI or were assigned to a control group that did not receive MI. The pretreatment MI group, compared to the control group, experienced significantly greater reduction in anxiety symptoms post-CBT. These results suggest that brief MI pretreatment enhances the efficacy of CBT on anxiety. A combination of MI and CBT may be particularly promising for the treatment of anxiety, with MI directed at increasing motivation and commitment to change, and CBT directed at helping the client achieve the desired changes.College cannabis use continues to rise, yet few students voluntarily seek treatment for cannabis use, despite use-related problems. Thus, the campus judicial system may be one way to identify high-risk cannabis users and intervene with them. Despite research indicating that brief motivational interventions (BMIs) decrease risky alcohol use among students sanctioned for psychological services following campus alcohol policies violations, extant data do not support BMI for students who violate cannabis polices. Thus, the aims of this review paper are to (a) review the extant literature of BMI for cannabis use among sanctioned students, (b) discuss some unique issues concerning BMI for cannabis use, and (c) provide case examples of promising novel ways BMI may be used to address unique needs of these students. Given the wide range of cannabis use and related problems experienced by these students, personalized approaches to BMI-based interventions may improve outcomes for these students.Evidence indicates that motivation early in treatment is critical to treatment outcome, and motivational interviewing (MI) has addressed this finding by helping individuals work through ambivalence about change. Not only has it demonstrated improvements in treatment outcome across treatment populations and settings, it has been adapted with success into brief motivational interventions. This special issue explores the use of MI with populations at great risk for ambivalence in therapy, including college students violating campus policy, individuals who have been trafficked, and individuals in exposure therapy. The papers further highlight the versatility of MI-based interventions, as well as their limitations, that may help inform future directions for adapting MI as we move toward digital and web-based interventions. &lt;br&gt;
 Chemsex (drug use to enhance sex) has emerged among men who have sex with men (MSM). Non-consensual sex (NCS) is hypothesised to occur frequently under the influence of chemsex, however data are scarce. In this cross-sectional study, it was aimed to assess whether NCS is associated with chemsex. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We offered a survey about chemsex in the past 6 months (crystal methamphetamine, mephedrone and/or gamma-hydroxybutyrate/gamma-butyrolacton use) and NCS (sexual experiences beyond one's limits or unpleasant sexual experiences) in the past 5 years to Amsterdam-located gay dating platform users. Associations were assessed using χ² test, Fisher's exact test and multivariable logistic regression. &lt;/p&gt;
