Multimodal is just expected now

Remember when "AI" meant ChatGPT-style text chat? That feels ancient. Every major model now does text, images, audio, video. If your AI product can't handle at least 2 modalities, you're already behind. The interesting part is what this enables — tools that look at a screenshot and write code, or listen to a voice note and schedule a meeting. The applications are getting creative.

Open source is actually competitive now

Llama 3 and Mistral are genuinely good. Like, I've been running local inference on some tasks and the output quality is surprisingly close to GPT-4 level. The cost difference is massive though — running your own model vs paying per API call adds up fast.

AI agents are shipping, not just demoing
