The ServSafe Manager exam is closed book. No textbook, no study guide, no printed temperature chart, no notes you wrote yourself, and nothing on a screen. That single rule shapes everything else about the day — what you are allowed to carry in, how long you sit, and why recall practice beats re-reading. Here is the whole experience from check-in to score, including the parts nobody tells you until you are already in the room.

Materials Closed book · no notes

Questions 90 total (80 scored + 10 pilot)

Time 90 minutes

Pass mark 70% — 56 of the 80 scored

Bring Photo ID + confirmation

Exam-day logistics differ between the in-person instructor-led paper exam and the online proctored exam, and providers revise their rules periodically. Treat this as the common shape of the day and confirm the specifics with whoever is administering your exam.

The short answer on the open-book question

It is not open book, and there is no version of the ServSafe Manager exam that is. This trips people up because the course is book-based — you sit a class with a textbook, then you take an exam that assumes you have internalised it. Candidates who spend the last week before the exam flipping through the book trying to memorise page layouts are preparing for a test they are not going to sit.

The practical consequence is blunt: every number you need has to be in your head. The temperature ladder, the two-stage cooling window, the pass mark, the storage order, the exclusion-and-restriction rules. You cannot look up 41°F or 165°F on the day. That is exactly why so many people who understood the material perfectly still lose marks — understanding is not the same as recall.

What goes in with you, and what does not

The rules are strict but they are consistent. One ID, and everything else stays outside.

Item

The rule

Why

Government photo ID

Required. The name must match your registration.

Identity verification is mandated by the accreditation the exam sits under. A mismatched name (nickname, maiden name, missing middle name) is the most common reason people get held up at check-in.

Booking confirmation / test code

Bring it. Digital is usually fine.

Gets you to the right seat without a proctor hunting through a list.

The textbook or study guide

Not allowed.

Closed book. Leave it in the car.

Your own notes or flash cards

Not allowed.

Same reason. Handwritten counts.

Phone, smart watch, earbuds

Not allowed at the desk, and often not in the room.

Anything that can hold or transmit information is excluded. Most centres provide a locker or ask you to switch it off and leave it.

Calculator

Not allowed — and not needed.

The exam is multiple choice and conceptual; there is no arithmetic to perform.

Scratch paper and pen

Provider's own only; do not bring your own.

Many centres issue a sheet or an erasable board and collect it at the end. Bringing loose paper looks like exactly what the rule exists to prevent.

Food, drink, bags, coats

Left outside the room.

Standard test-centre behaviour. Arrive in layers you can take off.

The shape of the day, step by step

Check in. You hand over photo ID and your confirmation, and you are signed in against the roster. Arrive early — late arrivals can be refused entry and lose the fee.

Surrender the rest. Phone and watch go in a locker or stay with the proctor. This is the step where unprepared candidates discover they have been relying on their notes.

The proctor briefing. A short script covering the format, the time limit, and how to flag a question to come back to. Listen to this one — it tells you whether you get a review screen and whether unanswered questions count as wrong.

90 questions in 90 minutes. On paper, you fill in an answer sheet that is collected as a single form, so a misaligned row can shift every answer after it — watch the row numbers. Online, you click and can usually move backwards.

Finish, and hand in everything. If the centre issued scratch paper, it is collected. Do not walk out with it.

The pacing trap is the same paper and screen: a small number of questions are written to be argued with. Ninety minutes across ninety questions is one minute each, which is comfortable — right up until you spend six minutes on a cooling question and then rush ten easy ones. If a question will not resolve in about ninety seconds, pick the best answer you have, flag it, and move. More on why people fail here.

How and when you find out whether you passed

This is the part that varies most, and it catches people out because they have heard a friend describe a completely different experience.

Online proctored exam: you see your score on screen as soon as you submit, and your certificate follows by email. The wait is minutes, not days.

Instructor-led paper exam: the answer sheet is scored after the session, so results usually reach you the same day or within a few days, depending on how the instructor returns them.

Either way, what you receive when you pass is a certificate valid for five years. If your employer or jurisdiction needs to see it, that document — not the score email — is what they want. See what the certification actually proves and how renewal works before the five years creep up on you.

What the pass mark means on the day

You need 70%, or 56 of the 80 scored questions. Ten of the ninety questions are unscored pilot items being trialled for future versions of the exam, and nothing on the page tells you which ones they are. That is by design — if pilots were marked, candidates would treat them differently. So the only workable approach is to answer all ninety as though every one counts.

Knowing you can miss about 24 questions is genuinely useful on the day. It means one question you cannot crack is not a catastrophe, and it means the correct behaviour when you are stuck is to keep moving rather than to burn the clock. Candidates who fail rarely fail because of one hard question; they fail because two hard questions ate fifteen minutes that belonged to twelve easy ones.

 If you do not pass

A retake is allowed, but not immediately, and not for free. Providers impose a minimum waiting period between attempts — commonly around 30 days — and you pay the exam fee again on the second sitting. The exact interval and the fee depend on which route you took, so confirm both with the provider you booked through rather than relying on a forum post.

The waiting period is not purely punitive. It is enough time to actually fix the thing that went wrong, which is almost never "I did not know enough" and almost always "I could not recall it under time pressure." That is a trainable problem, and it is trainable in three weeks.

What closed book means for how you should study

Here is the part that matters more than any logistics. If you cannot bring the book, then the book is not the deliverable — recall is. Reading a chapter creates the feeling of knowing, and that feeling survives right up to the moment a question asks you to produce a number from memory.

Two habits fix it, and both are cheap:

Test before you re-read. Answer questions on a domain first, then go back to the material for whatever you missed. You will read the same page in a fraction of the time because now it is answering a question you actually got wrong.

Practise under the real constraints. No notes open, one minute per question, mixed domains rather than grouped by topic. The exam will not present you with ten cooling questions in a row, so rehearsing that way builds the wrong reflex.

That is the whole argument for practising rather than reading, and it is why a closed-book exam rewards a question bank over a highlight pen. A realistic two to three week plan built on that principle, and the 7 domains and 21 tasks the questions are drawn from, are the two pages worth reading next.

 Frequently asked questions

Is the ServSafe Manager exam open book?
No. It is closed book and closed notes — no textbook, no printed charts, no flash cards, no self-written notes. Every number you need has to come from memory.

What do I need to bring?
A government photo ID whose name matches your registration, plus your booking confirmation or test code. Phone, watch, notes, calculator and your own paper all stay outside the room.

How soon do I get my results?
Online proctored exams show the score on screen immediately when you submit. Paper exams delivered by an instructor are scored afterwards, usually within a day or a few days.

What if I fail?
You can retake it after a minimum waiting period — commonly around 30 days — and you pay the exam fee again. Confirm both with your provider, as the terms differ by route.

Can I use a calculator or bring a temperature chart?
No to both. There is no arithmetic on the exam, and a printed temperature chart is exactly the kind of aid a closed-book exam excludes.

How many can I miss?
About 24. You need 70% — 56 correct out of the 80 scored questions in a 90-question, 90-minute paper.

Free · closed-book conditions
Practise recall, not re-reading
Timed, mixed-domain questions with per-domain scoring — no notes open, exactly like the real thing

8 things the Planet Zoo 2 Steam page doesn't tell you

Planet Zoo 2 ships on October 13, 2026, and most of the coverage right now is a rewrite of the Steam page. The store listing is a marketing page, though, and it leaves out most of the things that actually decide how you play. I spent the last week pulling the real numbers out of the game's own payload and store data. Here are the eight that surprise people the most.

Everything below comes from the dataset behind pz2tools.wiki (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.23263612), so the numbers are citable, not vibes.

 1. It's 130 species, not 120

The "120 species" figure that gets repeated is the base roster. Add the Deluxe Edition species and the launch count really is 130 — 124 base + 6 Deluxe. Plan around the base list and you'll be surprised by six species landing in biomes you never budgeted for.

Full list, filterable by biome / continent / conservation status: pz2tools.wiki/animals.

 2. Cohabitation is 1,221 pairs, and 739 of them are "no"

The Steam page says "build a habitat." The actual planning problem is which animals can share an enclosure. Across 130 species there are exactly 1,221 possible pairs:

376 likely compatible

106 unverified (no confirmed source — test before committing)

739 should not share

Six in ten pairs you'd casually try are the wrong call. Filterable chart: pz2tools.wiki/cohabitation.

 3. Eight species have zero likely-compatible partners

The popular "most social" list — Grey Wolf (30), Asian Elephant (27), Bactrian Camel (23), African Savannah Elephant (22), Cape Buffalo (22) — makes it look like everything cohabits with something. It doesn't. Eight species have zero likely partners and want a solo enclosure:

Aardvark, Clown Anemonefish, Nyala, Sable Antelope, Springbok, North Sulawesi Babirusa, Schooling Bannerfish, Longfin Batfish.

Three of those are fish, which leads into the next one.

 4. All 34 aquatic species are new to the series

The first game had no real aquarium content. Planet Zoo 2 ships 34 aquatic species, and every single one is new. Aquatic habitats also have their own build and filtration rules, so "water" is a sub-system, not decoration. Several of the eight zero-partner species are aquarium fish, so an aquarium zone is naturally a row of single-species tanks.

 5. Twelve flying species need a fully enclosed aviary

12 species fly and require a completely enclosed aviary — not a fence, not a netted habitat. This is the most common "why won't it let me place this" question, and it is nowhere on the store page.

 6. Unlock is one global instant, not midnight local

Planet Zoo 2 unlocks at a single moment worldwide: 15:00 BST on Oct 13, 2026 = 07:00 PT / 10:00 ET / 16:00 CET / 22:00 Beijing / 01:00 Oct 14 Sydney. Preload opens Oct 12, 15:00 BST. In Asia-Pacific you're playing late evening or past midnight; buying in another region doesn't unlock it earlier.

Breakdown: pz2tools.wiki/release-date.

 7. Denuvo is in, and the recommended spec is not light

The Steam build carries Denuvo Anti-tamper. Specs:

Min: i7-8700K / Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB, RTX 2060 6 GB / RX 5600 XT / Arc A750, DX12, 40 GB

Rec: i7-10700K / Ryzen 7 5800X, RTX 3070 8 GB / RX 6700 XT / Arc A770, SSD

What drives the load is interesting: water rendering (reflections, light, fish schools) and big flying flocks hammer the GPU, while visitor crowds are CPU-bound. A large aquarium is the most GPU-hungry thing you can build. And the 40 GB needs to be free before preload, not after. Details: pz2tools.wiki/system-requirements.

 8. Console parity is real, but read the fine print

Planet Zoo 2 launches simultaneously on PC (Steam + Epic), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. There is no Switch 2 version and no last-gen version — a base PS4 or older Xbox won't run it. Physical editions land Oct 20, a week later, at $49.99 base / $64.99 Deluxe.

 Why this exists

The whole point of the dataset — mirrored on GitHub with a Zenodo DOI — is that game reference numbers usually live in a dozen contradictory wiki pages. This one is a single source-verified set that a chart, a species list, and a JSON export all generate from.

If you're planning a first zoo: anchor on a high-compatibility species, give the eight zero-partner species their own space, and treat aquatics and aviary birds as separate zones with their own rules. Everything else follows from the compatibility map.

Building an Open Dataset for Planet Zoo 2 Before Launch: 130 Species, 1,221 Cohabitation Pairs

Planet Zoo 2 ships on October 13, 2026. We shipped the reference data for it on October 9 — four days before anyone can press Play.

This is a write-up of how we built an open dataset for a game that isn't out yet, what's in it, and the parts that were genuinely hard.

Site: https://pz2tools.wiki/

 The problem

Planet Zoo is a zoo-building sim where the hard part is not decorating — it's animal compatibility. Which species can share an enclosure, which will fight, which need a solo habitat. The first game had this spread across in-game tooltips, and the community rebuilt it by hand, repeatedly.

For the sequel the roster jumped to 130 species, and Zooopedia-style compatibility data isn't published in any machine-readable form at launch.

So we treated it as a data problem: build the compatibility table once, openly, and let everyone reuse it.

 What's in the dataset

130 species (124 base roster + 6 Deluxe Edition)

1,221 cohabitation pairs, each labelled:

376 likely compatible

106 unverified (conflicting / thin sources)

739 not compatible

Full conservation status for the roster: 63 Least Concern, 22 Endangered, 18 Vulnerable, 12 Critically Endangered, 8 Not Evaluated, 5 Near Threatened, 1 Domesticated, 1 Data Deficient

Licence: CC BY 4.0

Some findings that surprised us:

The most social animals are Grey Wolf (30 compatible partners), Asian Elephant (27), Bactrian Camel (23), plus African Savannah Elephant and Cape Buffalo at 22 each.

8 species have zero "likely" partners — Aardvark, Clown Anemonefish, Nyala, Sable Antelope, Springbok, North Sulawesi Babirusa, Schooling Bannerfish, Longfin Batfish. If you're planning a mixed exhibit, these are the ones that want their own enclosure.

 The hard part: provenance

Anyone can paste a compatibility table. The value is in labelling confidence. Every pair carries one of three states, and we never silently promote "unverified" to "likely". When sources disagreed, the pair stays unverified and says so.

That's also why the pair counts don't sum to a neat "everything is compatible" story: 739 of 1,221 pairs are a hard no, and we publish that too. Negative data is data.

 How it's distributed

DOI (citable, versioned): https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23263612 — Zenodo mints a concept DOI so citations always resolve to the latest version.

Kaggle: https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/pz2tools/planet-zoo-2-launch-dataset-130-species

GitHub (CSV/JSON + build scripts): https://github.com/odebo/planet-zoo-2-dataset

Reference site (browsable):

Animal list — https://pz2tools.wiki/animals/

Cohabitation matrix — https://pz2tools.wiki/cohabitation/

Release time, all timezones — https://pz2tools.wiki/release-date/

System requirements — https://pz2tools.wiki/system-requirements/

Lessons for anyone shipping data before a launch

Ship before the demand spike, not after. Search interest peaks on launch day. Being indexed and cited before that is worth more than being complete later.

Version the asset, and link the concept DOI. When we cut v1.0.1 we had hardcoded the version DOI in the site build — every page pointed at a stale release. The fix is boring and permanent: always reference the concept DOI.

Publish your uncertainty. Three-state labelling (likely / unverified / no) is more useful than a binary, and it survives scrutiny.

Make it citable. A DOI turns "a page someone found" into "a thing people cite".

If you build a fan tool, the dataset is the part with a long tail. The UI can be rebuilt in a weekend; the labelled, sourced table can't.

Feedback or corrections welcome — especially if you spot a cohabitation pair we got wrong.

Planet Zoo 2 launches in 3 days: all 130 animals, 1,221 cohabitation pairs and the 739 that cannot share

Planet Zoo 2 launches on October 13, 2026 (15:00 BST / 22:00 Beijing), with preload open on October 11. I run pz2tools.wiki, an unofficial reference site built on a machine-readable export of the game's own Zoopedia payload. Three days out, here is the part of that dataset people actually search for at launch.

Every launch animal is already known - all 130 of them

The launch roster is 130 species: 124 in the base game and 6 in the Deluxe edition. For each one the site lists biome, enclosure type, taxonomy (class/order/family/genus), conservation status, adult size and weight, and barrier requirements.

If you are planning a zoo before the download finishes, the two lists worth bookmarking are:

All 130 Planet Zoo 2 animals - filter by biome, enclosure, class or conservation status

Release time, preload window and system requirements

The cohabitation matrix: 1,221 pairs, three verdicts

This is the one that surprises people. Enclosure sharing in Planet Zoo is not a per-animal flag, it comes out of intersecting requirements. I scored every pair of launch species that share both a biome and an enclosure type, which gives 1,221 pairs:

376 likely - compatible on every published rule available at launch

106 unverified - share a habitat but the deciding rule is not published

739 no - a concrete blocking rule, named in the row

The 739 exclusions matter as much as the 376 yeses. The verdicts are derived from published rules only, never datamined and never invented, and each row names the rule that produced it.

Some numbers from the matrix that are useful when you start a franchise:

8 species have zero likely partners: Aardvark, Clown Anemonefish, Nyala, Sable Antelope, Springbok, North Sulawesi Babirusa, Schooling Bannerfish and Longfin Batfish. Plan separate enclosures for these or accept the risk.

The most social species by likely-partner count: Grey Wolf (30), Asian Elephant (27), Bactrian Camel (23), African Savannah Elephant (22), Cape Buffalo (22).

Conservation status across the roster: 63 Least Concern, 22 Endangered, 18 Vulnerable, 12 Critically Endangered, 8 Not Evaluated, 5 Near Threatened, 1 Domesticated, 1 Data Deficient. Breeding programmes get more interesting when you can sort by this.

Open the interactive chart here: cohabitation matrix.

The dataset is open, and citable

I released the underlying data under CC BY 4.0 so anyone can build a planner, a Discord bot or a spreadsheet on top of it:

GitHub: github.com/odebo/planet-zoo-2-dataset - animals.csv/json and cohabitation.csv/json

Kaggle: Planet Zoo 2 launch dataset

DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.23263612 (always the latest version)

What I would check before buying

If you are still on the fence about whether your machine runs it, the system requirements page breaks the Steam listing into what each line actually means for a large zoo: pz2tools.wiki/system-requirements.

Everything on the site is second-hand from Frontier's own published pages. It is not affiliated with Frontier Developments, and the compatibility verdicts are derived from published rules rather than being statements by the publisher.

How to Register for the ServSafe Manager Exam (2026 Guide)

How to register for the ServSafe Manager exam

There is no single national registration page for every candidate, which is the part that trips people up. You book either through ServSafe's own system or through a state or provider program, and the route depends on where you work and who is paying. Here is how the options differ, what you need on hand, and the mistakes that cost people weeks.

Exam-only — Buy an exam access code, book a proctor

Course + exam — Class, then exam at the end

Remote proctoring — Available in many jurisdictions

Bring — Valid government photo ID

Typical lag — Slots can be weeks out

The three routes to a booked exam

Exam-only. You buy an exam access code and then register with a proctoring provider for a session, in person or remote. This is the cheapest route and assumes you are studying on your own.

Course plus exam. You book an instructor-led or online ServSafe Manager course, and the exam is administered at the end. Costs more, and the class dates may be weeks out.

Through your employer or a state program. Some chains and some health departments run their own administration and handle registration for you. If your employer is paying, start here, because they may require a specific provider.

 Before you pay for anything

Check which credential your jurisdiction accepts. Many require an ANSI-accredited food protection manager exam and accept more than one provider; some name a specific one.

Check what your employer reimburses. A course you pay for out of pocket may not be the one they wanted you to take.

Check whether you need a proctored session at all. If a Food Handler card is enough for your role, the Manager exam is the wrong purchase.

What to bring and what to expect on the day

Item

Detail

Photo ID

Government-issued, unexpired, matching the name on your registration

Exam access code

If you bought exam-only, you need the code in hand

Arrival

Arrive early; late arrivals are commonly refused and the fee is not refunded

Possessions

Phones, notes and watches are stored; nothing personal on the desk

Result

Usually on screen immediately; the certificate follows separately

The three mistakes that cost the most time

Booking the exam before you are ready. If you are scoring in the low 70s in practice, you are gambling on the exact cut score. Wait until you can score 85% twice.

Assuming the first available slot is soon. Proctored sessions, especially in rural areas and during peak season, can be booked out by weeks. Schedule first, then study to the date.

Buying the wrong product. Course, exam-only, and Food Handler are three different purchases. Confirm which one your requirement actually asks for.

ServSafe Study Guide PDF: What a Good One Actually Contains

ServSafe study guide PDF: what a good one contains

Most "ServSafe study guide PDF" results are either a paid product or a five-page summary that repeats the same dozen numbers with no structure. A guide is only useful if it is organised the way the exam is scored: by the seven domains, with the numbers attached to the rules they belong to. Here is what belongs in one, and what to do with it once you have it.

Exam domains — 7

Tasks in the blueprint — About 21

Pass mark — 70% (56 of the 80 scored)

Useful guide length — Short and structured, not long

The seven domains, in the order the exam weights them

#

Domain

What it asks

1

Providing safe food

Foodborne illness risk factors, the Big 6, TCS food

2

Forms of contamination

Biological, chemical, physical, allergens, cross-contact

3

Controlling time and temperature

Cooking, cooling, holding, reheating, calibrating

4

Cleaning and sanitising

Warewashing, sanitizer concentration, surfaces

5

Pest management and facilities

IPM hierarchy, water, plumbing, lighting, ventilation

6

Food safety management systems

HACCP, active managerial control, food defense

7

Regulatory authority

Inspection, imminent health hazards, recalls

Domain 3 and Domain 2 generate the most retakes, which is why a guide that spends its pages on temperature control and contamination is more useful than one that spends them on regulations.

What a guide must contain to be worth your time

The temperature ladder as a single table — cold holding, hot holding, cook temps by protein, cooling stages, reheating, and the danger zone in one place.

Sanitizer concentrations by chemical, with the ranges, not a single number.

The Big 9 allergens and the Big 6 pathogens, because both are recurring list questions.

The wash-rinse-sanitise order and the air-dry rule, which is asked in both the three-compartment and machine forms.

The management vocabulary — active managerial control, variance, imminent health hazard, HACCP — defined in one line each.

Questions attached to each section, because recognition is not recall, and the exam tests recall.

What a guide should not be

It should not be the course textbook compressed. Reading is the slowest way to move a memory exam score. If you have three weeks, spend one session reading and the rest answering questions and reviewing explanations, especially the explanations for items you got right by guessing.

How to use a guide in three passes

Pass one: read the temperature ladder and the sanitizer table. Memorise those, because nothing else compensates for not knowing them.

Pass two: take a timed mock, then re-read only the sections behind your two weakest domains.

Pass three: two days before the exam, run a second timed mock and skim the management vocabulary you keep forgetting.

ServSafe Food Handler practice test: what is on it, and what is not

The Food Handler card and the Manager certificate get confused constantly, and preparing for the wrong one wastes real money. The Food Handler course is short, non-proctored, and about 40 questions. The Manager exam is proctored, about 90 questions, and 70% of the scored items. Here is which one you probably need, and what the Food Handler material actually asks.

Food Handler — About 40 questions, no proctor

Food Handler validity — Commonly 3 years (varies by state)

Manager — About 90 questions, proctored, 70% to pass

Manager satisfies CFPM requirement — Yes

Food Handler satisfies it — No

Which certificate do you actually need?

Food Handler

Manager (CFPM)

Typical audience

Line cooks, servers, cashiers

Managers, shift leads, owners

Proctored

No

Yes, in person or remote

Typical length

A short course plus a quiz

About 90 questions, two-hour limit

Pass mark

Commonly 75% on the course quiz

70% of the 80 scored items

Satisfies a health-code CFPM rule

No

Yes

If your health department requires a certified food protection manager on staff, a Food Handler card does not satisfy it, no matter how many you have. Check which one your jurisdiction asks for before you pay for either.

What the Food Handler material actually tests

Handwashing: when to wash, how long, and what counts as a handwashing sink.

Temperature basics: the danger zone, 41 F and 135 F, and why TCS food is different.

Cross-contamination: raw above cooked, separate boards, glove and utensil use.

Allergens: the Big 9 and what cross-contact means in practice.

Personal hygiene and illness: reporting symptoms, covering cuts, clean uniforms.

Cleaning and sanitising: the difference, plus the wash-rinse-sanitise order.

 The overlap you can reuse

Roughly three quarters of the Food Handler content is also Manager content, taught at a shallower level: hygiene, temperature control, cross-contamination, allergens and cleaning. The Manager exam adds cold-chain detail, cooling curves, HACCP, facilities, pest control and a management-systems domain.

So the efficient path is one-directional. Practise at Manager depth and the Food Handler quiz becomes trivial. The reverse is not true.

ServSafe Manager test questions: the five shapes you will actually see

Every ServSafe Manager question you meet is one of a small number of shapes. Learn the shapes and the content becomes easier to recall under pressure, because you stop burning time working out what is being asked. Here are the five formats worth drilling, with worked examples.

Format — Multiple choice, one best answer

Question shapes — Five recurring types

Hardest type — The "what should the manager do first" scenario

Pass mark — 70% (56 of 80 scored)

 1. The number-recall question

The simplest shape. It asks for a temperature, a time, a concentration, or a duration, with four plausible numbers as options. There is no trick; you either know the number or you do not. It is worth memorising a short table rather than hoping to reason your way to it.

 2. The "what should the manager do first" question

This is the type candidates lose most often, because all four options are reasonable things to do eventually. The answer is the step that must logically come first: stop the risk, then correct, then document, then retrain. If an option protects the customer, it usually beats an option that manages the paperwork.

 3. The scenario dressed in restaurant detail

A paragraph about a busy Friday shift, a walk-in that was left open, and a cook who did not check a thermometer. Two of the four options are wrong because of a number, and two are wrong because of an order of operations. Strip the story down to the rule it is testing and the answer is usually ordinary.

 4. The "which is the exception" question

You are given three items that belong to a group and one that does not, or the reverse. These test whether you learned a list or learned a rule. The Big 9 allergens, the Big 6 pathogens, and the TCS food list are the three groups that come up most.

 5. The definition question

Management-systems vocabulary: active managerial control, variance, HACCP, food defense, imminent health hazard. These feel like trivia but they are cheap points, because the definitions are short and there is nothing to calculate.

 Where these shapes come from

The published exam blueprint organises the exam into seven domains and about 21 tasks, and every question traces back to one of them. Practising with the blueprint visible in your results is what turns a raw score into a study plan.

How Long Is the ServSafe Test? Questions, Time Limit, Pace (2026)

How long is the ServSafe test?

Plan for a two-hour session and roughly 90 multiple-choice questions. Most candidates finish in about 75 to 90 minutes, so the clock rarely decides the outcome — the content does. What actually consumes your day is the appointment, the check-in, and the proctoring overhead around the exam itself.

Questions — About 90 (80 scored + 10 pilot)

Time limit — Two hours

Typical finish — 75–90 minutes

Pace — About 75 seconds per question

Result — Usually immediate on screen

Administration details differ by provider and by state program, and some administer a 90-minute version. Confirm the clock and format with the provider you book with, not with a blog post.

How the two hours actually breaks down

Ninety questions in 120 minutes is 80 seconds per question. That is generous for factual recall and tight only if you read every scenario twice. The candidates who run out of time almost always share one habit: they re-read a question they have already answered instead of moving on.

Answer every question. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, and a blank is scored as wrong.

Flag and move. If a question takes more than about 90 seconds, flag it and come back. Do not let one scenario cost you four questions.

Budget the last 20 minutes for the flagged set, not for a full review pass.

Do not chase perfection. You need 70% of the 80 scored items — 56 correct. You are allowed to miss 24.

Why people say the exam feels long

The Manager exam is not long because of its clock; it is long because of its vocabulary. Scenario questions dress a single Food Code rule in a paragraph of restaurant detail, so a candidate who knows the rule still has to spend 20 seconds finding it. Practising with the same shape — timed, scenario-based, per-domain — is what removes that overhead.

 The session around the exam

Stage

What to expect

Booking

Schedule online or through a state program; classes can take weeks to find a slot

Check-in

Arrive early, bring valid photo ID, ID is verified against your registration

Materials

Nothing personal on the desk; scratch paper and a pencil are supplied or on screen

The exam

About 90 multiple-choice items inside a two-hour limit

After

A pass or fail result, usually on screen; the certificate follows separately

 Practice at the real pace

A mock you never time is a quiz. Run at least one full 90-item set with a clock running, so the pace is one less variable on the day that counts.

Free ServSafe Practice Test: What Free Actually Gets You (2026)

Is there a genuinely free ServSafe practice test?

Yes — and the useful question is not whether it is free but what the free tier actually gives you. A practice test that hands you 10 questions and a paywall teaches you nothing about whether you will pass. Here is how to tell a real free set from a lead magnet, and what to drill first once you have one.

Real exam — 90 items, 80 scored, 10 pilot

Pass mark — 70% (56 of 80 scored)

Free set that is useful — 90+ items, scored per domain

Worth paying for — Explanations, not more questions

What "free" usually means, and what it should mean

Three patterns show up over and over on practice-test pages. The first is a genuine free sample: a fixed set of questions, no account, no card. The second is a teaser that stops at question five. The third is a free trial that converts to a subscription you did not plan for.

A real free set is scored. A number at the end without a per-domain breakdown cannot tell you what to study tonight.

A real free set is exam-shaped. The Manager exam is about 90 multiple-choice items with a two-hour limit and 10 unscored pilot questions mixed in. A 10-question quiz is a warm-up, not a mock.

The scarce resource is explanations, not questions. You can find thousands of free ServSafe questions. What is hard to find, for free, is a sentence telling you why the other three options were wrong.

The order to use free material in

Take one full-length timed mock as a diagnostic, before you study. Score it, then read the per-domain result and pick your worst domain.

Drill that single domain until it stops being your worst. Then re-rank the domains and repeat.

Two or three days before the exam, run one more full timed mock. If you score 85% or better you are ready; if you are living at 70–75% you are gambling on the exact cut score.

That loop is the whole method. It works with any decent free set, which is why the size of the free tier matters much less than people assume.

The numbers a free set must teach you

Fact

Value the exam expects

Cold holding

41 F (5 C) or lower

Hot holding

135 F (57 C) or higher

Cook: poultry, stuffed, reheated

165 F (74 C) for 15 seconds

Cooling, stage 1

135 F to 70 F within 2 hours

Cooling, stage 2

70 F to 41 F within 4 more hours

Chlorine sanitizer

50–99 ppm on food-contact surfaces

Big 9 allergens

Milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, sesame

Planet Zoo 2 cohabitation chart: which of the 1,221 animal pairs can actually share an enclosure

Planet Zoo 2 ships 130 species, which is 8,385 possible pairs. Of those, 1,221 pairs share at least one biome and one enclosure type — those are the only ones worth testing. Here is what the data actually says, plus the method so you can check it yourself.

 The short version

1,221 pairs are theoretically co-habitable (shared biome + shared enclosure type).

Within those, only a subset are annotated as likely compatible in the game's own data.

8 species have zero likely-compatible partners in the current payload: Aardvark, Clown Anemonefish, Nyala, Sable Antelope, Springbok, North Sulawesi Babirusa, Schooling Bannerfish, Longfin Batfish.

The most sociable animals in the launch roster

Ranked by number of likely compatible partners:

Species

Likely partners

Grey Wolf

30

Asian Elephant

27

Bactrian Camel

23

African Savannah Elephant

22

Cape Buffalo

22

African Penguin

20

African Wild Dog

20

Black Wildebeest

20

Blue Wildebeest

20

Common Ostrich

20

Notice the pattern: the top of the list is dominated by African savannah species. Savannah (14 species) and Rainforest (19 species) are the two biomes with the deepest rosters, so they naturally produce the biggest compatible groups. Building a single large savannah habitat around a wolf/elephant/camel core is the lowest-risk plan.

 Enclosure types change everything

The 130 species break down as:

Enclosure type

Species

HabitatTerrestrial

54

Exhibit

30

HabitatAquarium

19

HabitatAquarium + Exhibit

15

HabitatFlying

12

Half the roster (67 of 130) is aquarium/exhibit/flying, which means they can never share a paddock with the terrestrial savannah crowd no matter how well the biomes match. If you only count
HabitatTerrestrial
, the cohabitation graph shrinks dramatically.

 How this was derived

Instead of guessing from the Zoopedia UI by hand, the dataset was extracted from Planet Zoo 2's own official Nuxt
_payload.json
— the same JSON that renders the in-game animal pages. That gives clean, complete fields:

biomes
,
continents
,
enclosure_types
— the cohabitation keys

conservation_status
,
class
,
order
,
family
,
genus
— taxonomy

barrier_grade
,
barrier_min_height_m
,
barrier_climb_proof
,
barrier_allow_water
— fence requirements

size_male/female
,
weight_male_kg/female_kg
— with a
weight_source
column so you know which numbers came from the payload

Because it comes from the official payload rather than datamining, the numbers are reproducible and the columns stay stable across patches.

 Consumers

If you build breeding planners, zoo layout tools, or spreadsheets, the files are CC BY 4.0:

Dataset: https://github.com/odebo/planet-zoo-2-dataset

DOI (citable): https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23263613

Kaggle mirror: https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/pz2tools/planet-zoo-2-launch-dataset-130-species

 Rendered version

There's a filterable chart where you pick species A and B and get the verdict, plus the biome/enclosure overlap:

Cohabitation chart: https://pz2tools.wiki/cohabitation/

All 130 animals: https://pz2tools.wiki/animals/

Release time & preload: https://pz2tools.wiki/release-date/

System requirements: https://pz2tools.wiki/system-requirements/

Conservation mix in the same roster, for the record: LeastConcern 63, Endangered 22, Vulnerable 18, CriticallyEndangered 12, NotEvaluated 8, NearThreatened 5, Domesticated 1, DataDeficient 1.

Game: Planet Zoo 2 (Frontier Developments), launch 2026-10-13 15:00 BST.

The ServSafe Manager exam almost never asks you to recite a rule. It describes a situation and asks what you do next. These twelve questions follow that pattern, with the reasoning spelled out.

 Time and temperature

A pot of chili finished cooking at 2:00 PM and is at 90°F at 3:30 PM. What must happen?

The first cooling stage requires 135°F down to 70°F within two hours. Ninety degrees at the 90-minute mark is behind schedule but not yet a violation. The correct action is to actively cool it — ice bath, shallow pans, or a blast chiller — and monitor the two-hour checkpoint.

A walk-in cooler reads 44°F at the start of the shift. What is the corrective action?

Above the 41°F cold-holding limit. Move the food to a unit holding 41°F or below, and if the time in the danger zone is unknown, discard. The exam wants both halves: relocate and evaluate.

Leftover soup is being reheated for the hot bar. To what temperature?

165°F for 15 seconds, within two hours. The common wrong answer is 135°F, which is the hot-holding number, not the reheating number.

 Personal hygiene

A cook coughs into their hand and continues plating. What is required?

They must stop, wash hands for 20 seconds, and re-glove. A glove is not a substitute for handwashing.

A food handler reports a sore throat and fever. What does the person in charge do?

Restrict or exclude based on the symptom and the role, and follow the reporting requirements. The exam tests the reporting trigger, not the diagnosis.

 Cross-contamination and storage

Where does ground beef go relative to whole cuts of pork in the cooler?

Below. Storage order by cooking temperature, top to bottom: ready-to-eat, seafood, whole cuts of beef and pork, ground meat, poultry.

A cutting board used for raw chicken is wiped with a cloth and reused for salad. What is violated?

It must be cleaned and sanitized, not wiped. A wipe-down does not remove or kill what was on it.

 Cleaning and sanitizing

What is the correct sequence for a three-compartment sink?

Wash, rinse, sanitize, air dry. Never towel dry — a towel recontaminates.

A chlorine sanitizer solution is prepared by eye. What is wrong?

Concentration must be measured against the manufacturer's label, using a test kit. Too weak does not sanitize; too strong is a chemical hazard.

 Receiving and facilities

Frozen food arrives partially thawed with ice crystals and a stained box. Do you accept it?

Reject it. Ice crystals plus a stained box indicate it has thawed and refrozen, and the temperature history is unknown.

You see rodent droppings in dry storage. What is the correct response?

Notify the person in charge, clean and sanitize, and involve a licensed pest control operator. Staff handle prevention; infestations are not a staff-level fix.

What are the three keys to integrated pest management?

Deny entry, deny food, deny shelter.

How to use a question bank properly

Do not read the explanations as a list of facts. After each miss, write down which rule you misapplied rather than which answer you picked. Two or three rules usually explain most of your misses, and those are the only ones worth drilling.

I run a free bank of 580 scenario questions built exactly this way, where every answer carries its Food Code citation:
