I see the error! I just checked the server logs on my end and noticed this exact error: ENOTFOUND api-inference.huggingface.co.

This actually happens because several ISPs in India block Hugging Face's API domains, so your local machine cannot reach their servers to run the Gemma model.

But don't worry, we can bypass this easily without using a VPN, and it's actually going to be much faster!

I have just rewritten the code to run the Gemma 2 model via Groq instead of Hugging Face. Groq is an AI inference engine that runs open-source models at blazing speeds (it will generate your podcast script in less than a second), and more importantly, it is not blocked by your ISP!

Here is what you need to do to fix it:

Go to console.groq.com/keys and sign up (it's completely free and instant).
Click "Create API Key" and copy the key.
Open your .env.local file and replace the HUGGINGFACE_KEY=... line with: GROQ_API_KEY=your_new_groq_key_here
Save the file.

Next.js will automatically detect the new .env.local file. Once you've saved the new key, go back to your browser and try searching for a topic again! It should work perfectly now.

For this one, Groq successfully wrote the script, but when it handed the script to ElevenLabs to generate the voice, ElevenLabs threw a "401 Unauthorized" error.

How I Built It

This project relies heavily on a mix of modern web frameworks and open-weight AI models to function efficiently on a free tier:

2. Groq + Open-Weight AI (Qwen): We pass the search context to an open-weight model (qwen/qwen3.8-27b) hosted on Groq for blazing-fast inference. The prompt instructs the model to extract facts, write an engaging podcast script, and generate 3 follow-up topics.
3. ElevenLabs: We pipe the generated script into ElevenLabs' Text-to-Speech API to generate the final audio file on the fly.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation was crucial for this project. By using open-weight models (like Qwen) instead of being locked into closed, proprietary endpoints, I was able to rapidly iterate on the prompt engineering and avoid massive API costs for text-generation. Open-source models allowed this app to dynamically process search results into creative scripts quickly, proving that community-driven AI can compete directly with closed giants for creative synthesis tasks.

This is called graceful degradation, and it's a fantastic software engineering practice. Your app will keep working as a text-based rabbit hole explorer even if the audio API cuts you off.

1. Update it locally (for testing on your computer)

Open your .env.local file in VS Code.

2. Update it on Vercel (for your live website)

Since your app is deployed, changing it in VS Code doesn't automatically change it on the live website. You have to tell Vercel to use the new key:

4. Scroll down until you see ELEVENLABS_API_KEY in the list.

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend

What I Built

I built Rabbit Hole Explorer, an interactive web app designed for my deeply curious friends who love getting lost in obscure internet mysteries and niche historical events (like the 1932 Great Emu War or The Dancing Plague of 1518).

Instead of reading boring, dry Wikipedia articles, a user simply types in a topic. The app automatically researches the internet, synthesizes the facts, and generates a custom, fully voiced mini-podcast audio script along with a factual summary. It solves the problem of "information fatigue" by turning raw research into an engaging, bite-sized listening experience. It even suggests dynamic "Go Deeper" follow-up topics to keep them tumbling down the rabbit hole!

Bonus: When I handed this to my friend, they immediately spent an hour generating podcasts about weird deep-sea creatures and said, "This is incredibly addictive—it's like having a personalized radio host for my ADHD."

How I Built It

This project relies heavily on a mix of modern web frameworks and open-weight AI models to function efficiently on a free tier:
* Frontend: Next.js 15 (App Router), React, and Tailwind CSS. I designed a custom, vibrant "Neo-Brutalism" UI from scratch, complete with an interactive canvas grid background that creates a pixel-art

* The AI / Logic Pipeline:
1. SerpApi triggers a live web search for the user's obscure topic to fetch real-world context.
2. Groq + Open-Weight AI (Qwen): We pass the search context to an open-weight model (qwen/qwen3.8-27b) hosted on Groq for blazing-fast inference. The prompt instructs the model to extract facts, write an engaging podcast script, and generate 3 follow-up topics.
3. ElevenLabs: We pipe the generated script into ElevenLabs' Text-to-Speech API to generate the final audio file on the fly.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation was crucial for this project. By using open-weight models (like Qwen) instead of being locked into closed, proprietary endpoints, I was able to rapidly iterate on the prompt engineering and avoid massive API costs for text-generation. Open-source models allowed this app to dynamically process search results into creative scripts quickly, proving that community-driven AI can compete directly with closed giants for creative synthesis tasks.

1. Upload it to YouTube or Vimeo for free.
2. Grab the link they give you.
3. Paste it into the {% embed %} tag shown in Option 1.

Option 3: Use a GIF instead

If your video is very short (under 15 seconds) and has no audio, you can use a free online converter to change your .mp4 into a .gif. Dev.to treats GIFs exactly like images, meaning you can literally just drag and drop the .gif file directly from your computer into the editor box, and it will upload and play automatically!
