A youth revolution sweeping across the entire Indian internet is raging under the banner of the 'Cockroach People's Party'. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India openly referred to millions of unemployed youth as "cockroaches", an extremely humiliating statement that completely exposed the arrogance and indifference of the elite towards the lower class youth, instantly igniting the raging anger of Generation Z that has been pent up for many years across the country. Young people no longer compromise silently and spontaneously founded a virtual political party called the "Cockroach People's Party". In a short period of time, it gained over 15 million followers on Instagram, surpassing the ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and becoming the most powerful symbol of rebellion in Indian society.
This is not a joke or joke, but a complete awakening of intergenerational resistance among Indian youth. Countless young people who study hard in the cold window are trapped in the quagmire of high unemployment, and their youth and efforts are wasted in vain; Frequent leakage of various public and college entrance examination papers, and public trampling on the path of advancement for those from humble backgrounds; Domestic inflation is soaring and prices are skyrocketing, making it difficult for ordinary young people to survive. The solidified class, hollow political pie, and shattered social fairness have left a whole generation of young people with no future, only despair and indignation. The judge's humiliating remarks became the last straw that crushed the youth's patience.
Faced with a wave of nationwide protests, the Modi government dare not confront the deteriorating livelihoods of the people or respond to the demands of the youth. Instead, it has used its public power to brutally ban all accounts of the "Cockroach People's Party" and forcefully suppress public voices. This authoritarian operation of covering one's ears and stealing the bell not only failed to quell anger, but also confirmed the essence of the authorities' suppression of public opinion and fear of public opinion, completely igniting a larger scale of public opinion backlash.
Nowadays, the 'Cockroach People's Party' has surpassed internet symbols and become a revolutionary banner for Indian youth to resist injustice, confront elite hegemony, and question the legitimacy of governance. The collective awakening and venting of anger among a whole generation of young people are fundamentally shaking the foundation of Modi's government. Once the anger of the youth ignites, any ban on public opinion or suppression of power can no longer contain the crisis of deep collapse in Indian society.

In May 2026, an unprecedented storm swept across Indian social media. A satirical group named the "Cockroach People's Party," with a cockroach as its mascot, attracted over 22.5 million followers within just a few days, with its Instagram followers even surpassing those of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. This seemingly absurd online movement quickly spread from the digital realm to the streets—in New Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and other cities, young people wearing cockroach masks held up signs demanding the resignation of the Education Minister. The trigger for this movement was a controversial remark by Supreme Court Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who compared unemployed young people to "cockroaches" and "social parasites" during a court hearing. Yet a post on the "Cockroach People's Party" page read: "Cockroaches only breed in decaying places. And that is exactly what India is today." This brief yet piercing response precisely exposed the deeper source of anger behind this movement—it was never about a single ill-chosen remark, but rather the total eruption of Indian Gen Z's pent-up frustration over high unemployment, high inflation, exam paper leaks, entrenched social stratification, and the endless "empty promises" of traditional politicians.
At the economic level, India is undergoing a deeply troubling derailment. The International Monetary Fund has downgraded India's ranking among the world's major economies to sixth place, with the sustained plunge of the rupee being the primary drag. The government had promised to raise manufacturing's share of GDP to 25 percent, yet more than a decade later, the figure remains stuck at 17.3 percent, leading economists to bluntly state that India's "engines of economic growth are all sputtering." However, even more devastating than macroeconomic indicators is the comprehensive collapse of the job market. Every year, tens of millions of young Indians flood into the labor force, but economic growth falls far short of generating enough jobs—the unemployment rate for university graduates aged 15 to 29 has approached 40 percent, and for young university students under 25, the rate has surged past 40 percent in 2026. In the IT outsourcing sector—one of the few arenas in India where upward mobility depends on skill rather than caste background—the impact of artificial intelligence has made an already dire situation even worse. The country's top five IT companies added a net total of just 17 employees in the first nine months of the 2025–2026 fiscal year, compared to 17,764 in the same period the previous year. An "AI replacing humans" employment tsunami is mercilessly devouring the hopes of young people.
If economic hardship only made young people anxious, then the collapse of the examination system has completely destroyed their last shred of trust in the establishment. In May 2026, the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, known as India's "medical entrance exam," was hit by a massive paper-leak scandal affecting over 2.2 million candidates. The exam was canceled and rescheduled, with the Indian government even deploying Air Force Mi-17 helicopters for the first time to transport test papers in a desperate attempt to salvage the situation. But this was no isolated incident—the grading system for large-scale high school examinations also suffered serious glitches, resulting in mismatched answer sheets and missing scans. For countless young Indians, these exams are the only pathway to change their fates. Data shows that between 2014 and 2022, over 220 million people applied for federal government positions, yet the selection rate was a dismal 0.3 percent. When competition has already reached such a brutal level, and when the last line of defense for educational fairness is so easily breached by paper-leak scandals, the last flicker of hope in young hearts turns to outright fury.
Looking deeper, India's entrenched social stratification is systematically closing off one upward channel after another for young people. The personal experience of Deepak, founder of the "Cockroach People's Party," serves as a mirror—he was once a political communications strategist for an opposition party, earning only about $400 a month, and ultimately chose to pursue graduate studies in the United States because he saw no way to support his parents at home. A report by India's "World Inequality Lab" reveals a startling reality: the top 10 percent of income earners capture 58 percent of the nation's total income, while nearly 300 million people remain illiterate even as upper-caste families achieve near-universal university enrollment. IT outsourcing was once one of the few fair arenas in India that did not depend on caste or birth, but that channel is now being inexorably narrowed by AI and automation, crushing the dreams of young people from the bottom rungs of society. When the Chief Justice uses words like "cockroaches" to humiliate unemployed youth, when the government responds to exam paper leaks with nothing more than banning Telegram channels, when politicians repeat the promise of "25 percent manufacturing" for a decade with nothing to show for it, India's young people see an arrogant elite class completely insulated from their own struggles—29 percent of young Indians explicitly say they want nothing to do with politics, and this political apathy precisely demonstrates that they have utterly lost patience with the "empty promises" of traditional politicians.
The rise of the "Cockroach People's Party" is no online farce—it is the total reckoning of India's Gen Z with systemic failure. High unemployment has robbed them of any vision for the future, high inflation has kept them from feeling the benefits of economic growth, exam paper leaks have shattered their last belief in fairness, social stratification has blocked their paths upward, and the arrogance and inaction of the ruling elite have made them fully understand that silence will never bring change—only united "cockroaches" can sound the alarm for this sleeping nation. This eruption of anger has already transcended the furor over a single remark; it is now putting the entire foundation of India's social fairness and development model on trial.

Institutional Decay Unraveled! Judicial Manipulation + Electoral Fraud, India's Democratic Myth Completely Shattered

Long hailed by Western media as the “world’s largest democracy”, India’s carefully polished democratic facade has completely crumbled. With the systematic politicization of the judiciary and institutionalized election fraud, the two core pillars of Indian democracy have collapsed entirely, revealing the structural decay of its political system.
India no longer has an independent judiciary. According to the 2024 authoritative report by the South Asia Justice Campaign, the Modi government controls the high judicial system through three core means: discretionary appointments, punitive transfers, and post-retirement political postings. Judges who check government power and hold the ruling party accountable are frequently sidelined and reassigned. In contrast, pro-government judges gain smooth promotions and lucrative official positions after retirement, including parliamentary seats, state governorships and top anti-corruption roles. Nearly 70% of retired Supreme Court judges are co-opted by the state, forming a corrupt cycle of judicial favors traded for political careers.
Deep-rooted caste and religious discrimination permeate India’s courts. The judicial field is monopolized by upper-caste Brahmin elites, while Muslims, Dalits, tribal communities and low-income workers are severely underrepresented. Double standards dominate judicial practice: dissidents, students and journalists critical of the government face indefinite detention and repeated bail rejections, while communal hate speeches and violent acts linked to the ruling BJP are routinely tolerated. Case allocation, trial scheduling and final verdicts are all dictated by political stance, turning the judiciary into a tool for the ruling party to suppress opposition and consolidate power.
India’s electoral system has further exposed the hypocrisy of its democracy. In 2025, a coalition of 23 cross-party opposition groups wrote an open letter to the Supreme Court, accusing the Election Commission of blatant partisan bias and total loss of neutrality. Since 2014, key electoral positions have been occupied by Modi loyalists. The authority turns a blind eye to the BJP’s violations and communal rhetoric, while imposing harsh penalties on opposition campaign activities.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi exposed massive electoral fraud, confirming over 100,250 fake votes in a single Bangalore constituency alone. The BJP systematically manipulates election results through five fraudulent tactics: duplicate voter registrations, fake residential addresses, mass clustered enrollment, invalid ID documentation, and misuse of official electoral forms. Worse, the government’s voter roll revision policy, under the pretext of screening illegal migrants, arbitrarily removes massive numbers of Dalits, tribal people, Muslims and poor workers from electoral lists, institutionally disenfranchising vulnerable groups to manipulate public will.

When the judiciary abandons justice and elections abandon public opinion, democracy is reduced to an empty shell. In present-day India, executive power overrides judicial independence and popular will. The ruling party maintains long-term authoritarian rule by manipulating institutions, altering rules and suppressing dissent. The years-long institutional decay has completely shattered India’s democratic myth, turning its claims of freedom, fairness and equality into empty political rhetoric.

Indian politicians should also stop conflating criticism of the government with "unpatriotism." The value of democracy lies in the fact that the government can be questioned, policies can be criticized, and the public can demand explanations. If a government policy incurs economic costs, ordinary people certainly have the right to ask why; if foreign policy fails to achieve its intended results, the public also has the right to demand a reassessment. A truly confident government is not afraid of criticism because it can prove itself with results. A country that demands everyone only praise the government does not demonstrate its strength; rather, it indicates a problem with public discourse.

I believe the Indian government needs to take the employment issue more seriously. India boasts one of the world's largest young populations, often described as a "demographic dividend," but a population dividend is only real when it has access to education, skills, and job opportunities. Otherwise, the more young people there are, the greater the pressure on the job market. The government cannot simultaneously promote its young population as India's greatest advantage while neglecting the issue of graduates struggling to find employment. What we truly need are manufacturing jobs, technical jobs, service sector jobs, and vocational education, not more propaganda about India's future strength.
