How do I plan to obtain Microsoft Azure certifications?

At the end of 2023, I secured a position in DevOps, something I had been striving for over the past three or four years. The challenge of working as a DevOps at ADTsys Data Cloud, providing services to Ambev, is enormous:

Working with a cloud I've never worked with before, Microsoft Azure.
Dealing with a highly robust infrastructure, presenting various opportunities and challenges.
Constantly working with FinOps.

Starting the year with my first full-time DevOps job couldn't be better! I was so excited about this opportunity that I decided to create a plan for the first semester of 2024 to become the best version of myself as a DevOps professional. In summary, the plan involves making improvements in key areas that I consider important for my future career, such as:

Incorporating English into my daily work routine (this post is one of the tasks to achieve that 😊).
Technical deepening and experience in a new cloud (in this case, I chose Azure).
Understanding how Ambev operates with Public Cloud to become independent sooner and contribute to infrastructure improvements and support.
Deep diving into Networking, something I've wanted to explore for a long time, with a focus on Azure since I'm studying it.

As the first major step in this plan, I obtained my AZ-900: Azure Fundamentals certification. This step was crucial for me, not only for achieving one of my planning goals but also because it marked my first technical certification in my entire career. In this post, I will discuss my motivation for certifying with Microsoft Azure and how I prepared (both technically and emotionally) for this first certification.

First step: Where do I want to go?

First and foremost, you need to understand where you want to go in terms of practical knowledge. Define what to study, how to deliver what you've studied, and set a future date to reflect on what you've achieved. In my case, I set broad goals, aiming to become a professional capable of architecting and developing an effective (easy to understand and extend) and efficient (lower costs with greater deliverables) infrastructure within the next 6 months. These goals can be broken down into smaller parts, with more time allocated to each—this varies based on individual planning. The key is to have clear objectives (how you will do it and how you will evaluate these objectives) and defined deadlines (when you will deliver and assess the results).

To achieve my goals, I sought a good platform to take the necessary courses for certifications and understand the theoretical and practical paths to follow. I used the Pluralsight training platform, specifically Cloud Guru, recommended by a former colleague (thanks, Ingson!! ❤️). While I'm not trying to convince anyone to use it (as I'm not sponsored), I'd like to mention that my experience with it has been excellent so far. I found a set of courses, the famous roadmaps, that would help me become a complete Azure DevOps professional. Based on this roadmap, I set a goal to obtain 5 certifications this semester (yes, on hard mode): AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals, AZ-104 Azure Administrator, AZ-204 Azure Developer Associate, AZ-400 DevOps Engineer Expert, and AZ-305 Azure Solutions Architect Expert. Once you understand where you want to go and figure out how to do it, it's time to plan the practical aspects.

Second step: How do I get there?

Our time is limited, and without a plan, we become entirely subject to chance. With the first step taken, we already have an idea of the content we need to consume and deliver. Now we need to create a schedule, correlating these tasks with our daily lives, understanding the complexity of each task. This action will bring out some important aspects: a sense of urgency, responsibility, and habit changes.

With a sense of urgency, we understand how necessary it is to study what we've defined. Depending on what needs to be delivered during work or practice days, some tasks may be added or removed from the plan. For example, I struggled to understand networking, and the chosen roadmap didn't provide the depth I needed to overcome this challenge. In this case, I added another course focused on Microsoft Azure, AZ-500 Secure Networking, to ensure that by the end of the semester, this won't be a significant obstacle. Currently, it's not something I want to certify in, but it's urgent to address for the success of my plan.
With a sense of responsibility, we understand what is important at a given time: when to study, when to deliver, when to work on something outside the scope of our studies, and so on. For those creating a plan to meet work requirements, it's essential to know that, regardless of our knowledge or experience gaps, we are paid to deliver what was requested. Proactively not letting things slip is crucial in these situations. As I recently started at the company, I need to create accesses and permissions to use Ambev's resources. This gave me time to study the infrastructure along with my first course and deliver tasks with my current knowledge. Along with urgency, comes the responsibility to, if necessary, adjust and execute the plan while keeping an eye on whether you're being responsible with your deliveries.
With habit changes, we can alter results and achieve things that our old habits couldn't. I believe that new habits are crucial factors that enable us to reach new heights. The bigger and crazier the goal, the more significant and radical the change in one or more habits. Understanding which habits hinder you today and identifying those that are necessary but absent is essential to executing the plan. In my case, I needed to change my sleep routine (going to bed and waking up earlier to gain more time and energy), add study hours, and practice and write content about my learning for better retention.

Certainly, we are not masters of time, and unforeseen events happen, but the more prepared we are, the smaller the impact of these occasions. I believe that, with the three items mentioned above in mind, achieving your goals amidst adversity will not be impossible.

Third and final step: conclude, evaluate, and evolve

This step can be treated as part of the process and as the conclusion of your plan. It becomes part of the process because after completing a small task, you evaluate how it was done, its results, and identify improvements for the next action. However, it becomes the conclusion of your plan when, from a macro perspective, you achieve your major goals. You evaluate the entire execution process, including results, and take stock of what went well and what needed modification. At this stage, self-awareness and honesty with yourself will be important to apply it effectively, without being affected by imposter syndrome or falling victim to the Dunning-Kruger effect.

The conclusion of the plan is not always positive in terms of results. We can plan many things and achieve 80%, 60%, 40%, or even 20% of it. The important thing at this moment is to have a clear head to understand when you made mistakes and how to avoid them in the next plan. Yes, the next one, because we need to keep evolving as individuals and professionals. These analyses, regardless of the percentage of correctness, reveal how much we need to improve (question your self-criticism if you don't find improvements in yourself 🙂). The results of this third and final step will depend on your ability to self-evaluate and understand what went wrong during the process. Oh, and celebrate your victories, even if they are still small.

In my case, I took the AZ-900 exam and passed, marking my first achievement this semester. However, I scored 790 out of 1000 points, with 700 points required for passing. I studied a lot, especially considering that it's an easy exam, but achieving a perfect score wasn't possible. Regardless of the slightly bitter feeling for not achieving 100% correctness, it cannot prevent me from seeing that the goal was achieved and that there are things I can improve. We move forward learning, adapting, and accomplishing 👍.

No final do ano de 2023 eu consegui uma vaga para DevOps, algo que há uns três ou quatro anos eu estava empenhado para conseguir. O desafio de trabalhar como DevOps na ADTsys Data Cloud, prestando serviços para a Ambev, é gigante:

Trabalhar com uma cloud que eu nunca trabalhei, a Microsoft Azure
Trabalhar com uma infraestrutura super robusta, com diversas oportunidades e desafios
Trabalhar constantemente com FinOps

Não tinha como começar melhor meu ano, com meu primeiro emprego como DevOps full time! Fique tão empolgado com essa oportunidade que resolvi criar uma planejamento para o primeiro semestre de 2024 para tentar ser a melhor versão que eu pudesse ser do Rafael Vilarinho como DevOps. Resumidamente, o planejamento consiste em realizar melhorias em alguns pilares que julguei importantes para minha carreira daqui para frente, tais como:

Uso do inglês no meu dia a dia de trabalho (esse post é uma das tarefas para alcançar isso 😀);
Aprofundamento técnico e vivência em uma nova Cloud (pelo cenário atual, escolhi a Azure);
Entender a forma que a Ambev trabalha com Public Cloud, para o quanto antes me tornar independente para somar com melhorias e sustentações da infra;
Deep diving em Networking, algo que há muito tempo já queria me aprofundar. Como estou estudando Azure, esse estudo será focado nessa Cloud.

Como primeiro grande passo desse planejamento, consegui tirar minha certificação AZ-900: Azure Fundamentals. Essa foi passo foi algo muito importante para mim, não apenas por ter alcançado um dos objetivos do meu planejamento, mas porque foi minha primeira certificação técnica em toda minha carreira. Nesse post vou falar um pouco sorbe a motiviação de me certificar com a Microsoft Azure e como eu me preparei (tecnica e emocionalmente) para conseguir essa primeira certificação.

Primeiro passo: aonde quero chegar?

Primeiro de tudo, você precisa entender onde você quer chegar em pratica e conhecimento, definindo o que estudar, como entregar o que estudou e uma data futura para você olhar para trás e ver o que conseguiu alcançar. No meu caso, eu fui bem abrangente nesses objetivos, definindo que meu objetivo nesses próximos 6 meses, na medida do possível, seria me tornar um profissional capaz de arquitetar e desenvolver uma infraestrutura eficaz no seu modelo (fácil entendimento e extensão) e eficiente na sua aplicação (menores custos com maiores entregas). Porém, facilmente poderiamos quebrar esse objetivo em diversas partes, com um tempo maior para cada uma delas…isso vai de cada pessoa que está planejando. O importante é ter objetivos claros (como vou fazer e como vou enxergar esses objetivos) e prazos definidos (quando vou entregar e avaliar os resultados).

No meu caso, para alcançar o que planejei, busquei uma boa plataforma para conseguir fazer os cursos necessários para essas certificações e entender qual caminho teórico e prático eu deveria seguir. No caso, eu utilizei a plataforma de ensino da Pluralsight, a Cloud Guru, a qual foi uma indicação de um antigo colega de trabalho (obrigado Ingson!! ❤️). Sem a pretensão de convencer ninguém a usa-la, até porque não sou patrocinado por ela, eu gostaria de dizer que minha experiência nela foi excelente até o momento. Nela eu encontrei um conjunto de cursos, os famosos roadmaps, que iriam me ajudar a me tornar um Azure DevOps completo. Em suma, baseado nesse roadmap, eu me coloquei como objetivo tirar 5 certificações nesse semestre (sim, modo hard): AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals, AZ-104 Azure Administrator, AZ-204 Azure Developer Associate, AZ-400 DevOps Engineer Expert e AZ-305 Azure Solutions Architect Expert . Portanto, uma vez que você entende onde quer chegar e encontra maneiras de entender como vai fazer isso, está na hora de planejar a prática dessas coisas.

Segundo passo: como vou chegar lá?

Nosso tempo é escaço e, quando não temos um planejamento para ele, ficamos totalmente refém do acaso. Vamos vivendo nosso dia a dia conforme as coisas vão acontecendo, as quais podem ser simples ou difíceis de lidar. Com o primeiro passo feito, já teremos uma noção do tamanho do conteúdo que vamos precisar consumir e entregar, então precisamos agora criar um cronograma para isso, correlacionando essas tarefas com o nosso dia a dia, entendo a complexidade de cada tarefa. Essa ação vai trazer a tona algumas coisas importantes: senso de urgência, de responsabilidade e mudanças de habito.

Com o senso de urgência, vamos entender o quão realmente necessário vai ser estudar o que você definiu e, dependendo do que você precisa entregar durante seus dias de trabalho ou prática, algumas coisas poderão ser adicionadas ou removidas do planejamento. Por exemplo, eu tenho uma grande dificuldade de entender o assunto Networking e, no caso do roadmap que escolhi, não existe um aprofundamento que preciso para diminuir essa dificuldade. Nesse caso, eu acrescentei um outro curso, focado na Microsoft Azure, o AZ-500 Secure Networking, para garantir que no final desse semestre, isso não seja mais um grande problema. No momento não é algo que eu quero certificar, mas é algo que eu vejo como urgente para conseguir o resultado do meu planejamento.
Com o senso de responsabilidade, conseguimos entender quais coisas são importantes em um determinado tempo: quando é tempo de estudar; quando é tempo de entregar; quando é tempo de trabalhar com algo que foge do que você está estudando e etc. Para quem está criando um planejamento para suprir uma necessidade do trabalho, é importante saber que, independente dos nossos gaps de conhecimento ou de experiência, somos pagos para entregar o que foi pedido. Para essas situações a proatividade em não “deixar a peteca cair” é extremamente importante. Como iniciei há pouco tempo de empresa, há necessidade de criar acessos e permissões para utilizar os recursos da Ambev. Isso me deu tempo para estudar a infraestrutura junto com meu primeiro curso e já entregar tarefas com meu know-how atual. Junto com a urgência, vem a responsabilidade de você, se necessário, mudar e executar seu planejamento sempre olhando em volta se você está sendo responsável com suas entregas.
Com a mudança de hábito conseguimos mudar resultados e alcançar coisas que anteriormente, nossos antigos hábitos não conseguiriam. Eu vejo que os novos hábitos são de fato fatores cruciais para que nos fazem alcançar novas coisas. Quão maior e maluco for esse objetivo, maior e maluco será a mudança de um ou mais hábitos. Entender quais habitos te atrapalham hoje e aqueles que são necessários e você não possui será essencial para conseguir executar o planejamento. No meu caso, precisei mudar minha rotina de sono (dormir e acordar mais cedo e ganhar mais tempo e disposição), acrescentar horas de curso, praticar e escrever conteúdo sobre o aprendizado para fixação.

Claro, não somos donos do tempo e imprevistos acontecem, mas o quanto mais estivermos preparados, menor serão os impactos dessas ocasiões. Creio que, tendo em mente os três itens mencionados acima, alcançar seus objetivos em meio às adversidades não será impossível.

Terceiro e último passo: concluir, avaliar e evoluir

Esse passo pode ser tratado como parte do processo e como conclusão do seu planejamento. Ele se torna parte do processo porque concluímos uma pequena tarefa, avaliamos como a realizamos e seus resultados e levantamos melhorias de como podemos atuar na próxima ação. Entretanto, ele se torna a conclusão do seu planejamento quando, sob uma ótica macro dele, você conclui seus grandes objetivos, avalia como foi todo o processo de execução, bem como seus resultados, e faz um balanço geral de coisas que deram certo e outras que deram errado e precisaram ser modificadas. Nessa etapa, fraqueza e clareza consigo mesmo serão importantes para aplica-la de maneira eficaz, sem ser afetado pela síndrome do impostor ou estar sob o efeito Dunning-Kruger.

A conclusão do planejamento nem sempre é positiva em seus resultados, podemos planejar diversas coisas e conseguir alcançar 80%, 60%, 40% ou até 20% dele. O importante nesse momento é ter a cabeça no lugar para entender os momentos em que errou e como não cometê-los novamente no próximo planejamento. Sim, o próximo, pois precisamos continuar evoluindo como pessoa e profissional e essas analises, independente da porcentagem de acerto, só revelam o quanto precisamos evoluir (estranhe seu senso de auto crítica caso você não encontre melhorias em você 🙂). Os resultados desse terceiro e último passo serão de acordo com a sua capacidade de auto avaliar e a compreensão do que deu errado durante o processo. Ah, claro, comemore suas vitórias, mesmo que sejam pequenas >>ainda<<.

No meu caso, eu realizei o exame da AZ-900 e consegui passar, minha primeira conquista desse semestre. Porém, passei com 790 de 1000 pontos, onde 700 pontos eram necessários para conseguir aprovação. Eu estudei muito, mas muito mesmo, para gabaritar essa prova, ainda mais considerando que ela é uma prova fácil, mas não foi possível. Entretanto, independente do sentimento um pouquinho amargo por não conseguir o 100% de acerto, não pode me impedir de enxergar que o objetivo foi concluído e que existem coisas que tenho (e posso) melhorar. Seguimos em frente aprendendo, se moldando e realizando 👍.
