A tale on university life…

As an undergraduate at Sabaragamuwa University, I regularly get questions from others about what it’s truly like to study at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL). University here has its own mix of problems and surprises, thanks to this valley and the people who call it home.

A School in the Center of Nature

The university is situated in Belihuloya, far from city life and at a little distance from the nearest big city. Campus buildings are placed in a scenic landscape among mountains and close to the Haputale mountain range. Sabaragamuwa University is still a busy academic place, thanks to over 4,000 undergraduate students from the fields of Applied Sciences to Computing, Agriculture, Medicine and Social Sciences, despite being in a remote area.

The Challenges We Face

Living on campus means getting used to a lifestyle unlike that found in the city. You won’t find supermarkets, KFCs, Pizza Huts or other big shops close by. If you’re delighted by city services, you’ll miss them in the country. Running simple errands such as getting something to eat or going shopping, must be organized beforehand.

It is also very difficult to transport goods. Buses to Colombo and other places run, but expect them to be traditional with little air conditioning and they easily get stuffed with people, especially over the weekends and holidays. Having to get from one place to another can feel like a little adventure.

How Campus Life Can Be Beautiful

Even so, these struggles come with their own benefits. Looking around SUSL, you’ll see nature in all its beauty. Nearly each day has a fresh, cool breeze and the rolling green scenery is perfect for enjoying natural spaces after school. Since there are waterfalls, tea plantations and nice viewpoints nearby, you can get to nature easily when you want.

Campus life is compact and filled with friendly people. With distractions down, it’s simpler to get your work done, participate in learning events and make strong friends. There are many learning events and opportunities for students at the university which help us to develop and present what we have learned.

Why I Love Studying Here

If calmness, fantastic views and taking things slowly are important to you, Sabaragamuwa University is the ideal university. At times, it’s hard, but facing challenges makes you better and the setting is very motivating. I try to notice the little details like a breeze making me feel better after a long day or hearing birds every morning.

I encourage you to see what SUSL is like if you are considering it earlier. At the University, you can work on your future while enjoying the stunning surroundings of Sri Lanka’s hills.
