If you’ve run a Shopify or Amazon store for any length of time, you’ve likely experienced the same frustrating problem: you can see your revenue, but you cannot trust your profit numbers.

Most beginner and intermediate ecommerce sellers rely on platform-native analytics, generic spreadsheets, or oversimplified online calculators to measure margins, break-even points, and ad profitability. Unfortunately, nearly all of these tools suffer from the same critical flaws: they ignore hidden fees, oversimplify cost structures, force account sign-ups, or process sensitive business data on third-party servers.

This exact pain point is why MerchCalc was created.

 What Exactly Is MerchCalc?

MerchCalc is an independent, standalone suite of free ecommerce calculation tools built exclusively for online store owners, print-on-demand sellers, and dropshipping entrepreneurs operating on Shopify and Amazon.

Unlike generic "math calculators" or bloated SaaS dashboards locked behind subscriptions, MerchCalc’s entire product philosophy centers on one goal: giving sellers accurate, instant, and fully private profit metrics without friction, registration, or data tracking.

Every calculator under the MerchCalc brand is designed to solve a specific real-world seller problem that traditional analytics tools consistently get wrong. The platform currently covers the most critical calculations every ecommerce business needs:

Product gross profit and net margin calculation

True break-even volume simulation for new product launches

ACoS and ROAS ad profitability auditing

Inventory break-even risk evaluation

Tiered pricing profit simulation

Net take-home profit after platform fees and shipping costs

All calculations run locally inside your browser. No data uploads, no account creation, no user profiling, no hidden tracking.

Why MerchCalc Is Different From Every Other Ecommerce Calculator Tool

After analyzing hundreds of seller complaints, community discussions, and tool comparisons across Shopify forums, entrepreneur groups, and developer communities, I identified three major failures in existing profit calculators — failures MerchCalc was built specifically to fix.

1. Most Tools Miscalculate "True Profit"
Generic calculators only factor in simple product costs. They ignore variable fees that destroy margins for new sellers:

Payment processing fees

Shopify plan tier fees

Shipping and fulfillment variance

Return rate loss

Ad spend dilution on low-volume products

MerchCalc embeds real-world ecommerce cost logic into every tool, so sellers see final net profit, not optimistic surface-level math.

2. Nearly All Competitors Force Registration or Data Collection
Many popular margin calculators require email sign-ups just to unlock basic functionality. This creates two major issues for sellers:

Business profit data is sent to external servers

Users receive unsolicited marketing emails

Sensitive product margin data is stored on third-party platforms

MerchCalc operates on a strict no-signup, no-cloud, no-tracking model. Every computation stays local to your device.

3. Existing Tools Are Too Generic for POD and Dropshipping
Standard profit calculators are built for retail businesses with fixed costs. Print-on-demand and dropshipping sellers deal with dynamic, variable per-unit expenses that change with suppliers, shipping zones, and ad scaling.

MerchCalc’s logic is specifically calibrated for modern low-inventory ecommerce business models, making it far more accurate for today’s most common seller types.

The Core Brand Philosophy of MerchCalc

MerchCalc was founded on a simple but powerful principle:

Sellers should not pay or surrender privacy just to understand whether their products are profitable.

Too many new store owners waste weeks scaling ads, launching products, and testing creatives — only to realize they were selling at a net loss because their math was wrong. Bad calculator data creates bad business decisions, and bad decisions kill new ecommerce businesses faster than anything else.

MerchCalc exists to close that information gap.

The brand is intentionally minimalist, tool-focused, and seller-centric. There are no unnecessary features, no overcomplicated dashboards, and no upsells. Every update, every tool, and every optimization is built to improve accuracy and speed for active store owners.

 Who MerchCalc Is For

MerchCalc’s tools are built specifically for two primary user groups:

Shopify Sellers
Store owners running print-on-demand, dropshipping, or small-batch physical product stores who want to validate product profitability before launching ads or scaling inventory.

Amazon FBA & FBM Sellers
Amazon sellers needing precise break-even analysis, ROAS auditing, and net profit calculation after Amazon’s complex fee structures.

MerchCalc is ideal for:

First-time store owners

Side-hustle ecommerce entrepreneurs

Scaling micro-brands

Freelance ecommerce consultants

Content creators teaching ecommerce profitability

 Privacy-First Development Model (Brand Differentiator)

One of MerchCalc’s strongest competitive advantages is its strict local computation architecture.

All calculations run inside your browser. Nothing is transmitted to external servers. This guarantees:

Zero data leaks

Zero tracking

Zero stored user business data

Complete calculation privacy

In an industry where nearly every analytics tool harvests seller data for advertising and resale, MerchCalc’s privacy-focused design makes it a unique alternative for sellers who value data security.

 Final Vision

Moving forward, I will continue expanding MerchCalc’s suite of specialized seller calculators, refining calculation logic based on real seller feedback, and maintaining its core promise: accurate, free, private, and instant ecommerce profit math for every store owner.

Whether you’re validating your first product or auditing ad performance for a scaling store, MerchCalc is built to be the most reliable profit calculation toolkit for modern ecommerce sellers.

If you are an ecommerce seller or indie builder, I really value your feedback. What inputs or outputs are missing for your product research workflow? Bug reports and feature suggestions are welcome.

Built as part of MerchCalc — free tools for cross-border sellers, no login, no paywall.
MerchCalc is built for global ecommerce sellers. https://merchcalc.com is our only official website.
I built a free ecommerce ROI calculator because sellers keep mixing‑up ROI and ROAS

I spend a lot of time talking to Amazon and Shopify sellers, and one dangerous mistake keeps showing up over and over. People look at their ad dashboard, see a solid ROAS number, and immediately assume their product investment is profitable.

Here is a conversation I hear all too often:

“My ads are hitting 3.8x ROAS, this product is killing it. I’m going to double my inventory order and scale ad spend.”

Six to eight weeks later, they have plenty of sales volume, but their bank account is not growing. Sometimes they are even losing money.

The two things that mess sellers up

1. Confusing ROAS with true ROI

ROAS only compares total revenue against ad spend. It completely ignores product cost, inbound shipping, prep fees, platform commissions, return losses and all other capital you pour into inventory. You can have a fantastic‑looking ROAS while your overall investment return is negative.

Many sellers treat ROAS as their full picture metric. They make inventory buying decisions based purely on ad platform reporting, without accounting for every dollar they have sunk into the product. That is how promising listings quietly burn cash.

2. Ignoring time horizon when measuring returns

A 66.67% ROI sounds great on paper. But if that return takes 90 days to materialize versus 6 weeks, it is a completely different business outcome. Most spreadsheets and free online calculators only output static ROI percentage. They skip annualized return and payback period — two numbers critical for ecommerce capital planning. You need to know how fast your money comes back so you can reinvest into your next product.

I tried a bunch of existing ROI calculators online and ran into familiar pain points.

Generic finance calculators have zero ecommerce context. They do not distinguish between inventory capital, ad spend and operating overhead.

E‑commerce tools lock advanced outputs like payback period or annualized ROI behind paid tiers.

Many force account creation before you can run a single calculation.

Almost none side‑by‑side clarify the critical difference between ROI and ROAS for cross‑channel sellers.

So I built the tool I wished I had, as part of the MerchCalc suite.

 MerchCalc E‑commerce ROI Calculator

It is a browser‑native ROI calculator built for Amazon, Shopify and cross‑border sellers. All calculations run locally on your browser. None of your sales or investment data ever gets uploaded to any server. No login required, 100% free.

 Inputs it supports

Basic fields

Total Revenue / Sales ($)

Total Investment / Cost ($)

Investment Period (Days)

Expandable Advanced Options for granular cost breakdown:

COGS / Product Cost ($)

First‑Mile Shipping Cost ($)

Platform Commission (%)

Ad Spend ($)

Refund / Return Loss ($ or %)

Fixed Operating Costs ($)

 What it outputs

✅ Net Profit ($)
✅ ROI percentage
✅ Annualized ROI / CAGR %
✅ Payback Period (Days)
✅ ROAS (auto‑calculated once ad spend is entered)
✅ Revenue / Cost Ratio
✅ Visual revenue breakdown donut chart
✅ Quick profit status notification: Investment is profitable at the current inputs.

✅ Built‑in scenario simulation: tweak revenue or cost values and watch all metrics update instantly
✅ Works for product launches, ad campaigns, or mixed business investments
✅ No paywall, no sign‑up, offline‑capable local‑browser computation

You can try it live here: https://merchcalc.com/tools/roi-calc

Real demo case (default example preloaded inside the calculator)

This is the pre‑loaded example built directly into our ROI calculator for you to test right away.

Input values:
| Input Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Total Revenue / Sales | $10,000 |
| Total Investment / Cost | $6,000 |
| Investment Period | 90 Days |
| All advanced cost fields | $0 / 0% |

Calculator computed results:
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Net Profit | $4,000.00 |
| ROI | 66.67% |
| Annualized ROI / CAGR | 693.82% |
| Payback Period | 135 Days |
| Revenue / Cost Ratio | 1.67x |

Since Ad Spend = $0 in this demo case, ROAS does not generate a value. Once you input your real ad spend number, the ROAS metric will populate automatically for your advertising performance review.

The donut chart visualizes the $10,000 total revenue split: $6,000 total investment (60%) and $4,000 net profit (40%).

This demo case is positive and healthy. You can modify the numbers to simulate worse scenarios: increase your total investment, add COGS, platform fees, return losses and fixed operating costs to stress‑test whether your product idea remains profitable. This is the core value: before sending bulk inventory overseas, run your full set of projected numbers through this calculator.

 What’s next

This remains my side‑project, and I’m continuing iteration. I plan to add more scenario comparison workflows, export options, and tighter alignment with our existing profit and break‑even calculators.

If you are an ecommerce seller or indie builder, I really value your feedback. What inputs or outputs are missing for your product research workflow? Bug reports and feature suggestions are welcome.

What metric do you catch yourself mixing up most often? For me it was definitely confusing ROAS for real investment returns early in my selling days.

If you want to ground your ROI work with profit and break‑even forecasting, I built related tools in the same toolset.

Read about my Amazon FBA profit calculator here: https://dev.to/bin_li_dev/i-built-a-free-amazon-fba-profit-calculator-because-amazons-own-one-kept-lying-to-me-1dln

Read about my break‑even calculator for sellers launching ads here: https://dev.to/bin_li_dev/i-built-a-free-ecommerce-break-even-calculator-because-sellers-launch-ads-before-knowing-their-578g

Built as part of MerchCalc — free tools for cross‑border sellers, no login, no paywall.

MerchCalc is built for global ecommerce sellers. ** https://merchcalc.com ** is our only official website.
I built a free ecommerce break‑even calculator because sellers launch ads before knowing their break‑even number

I spend a lot of time talking to new and scaling ecommerce sellers, and one mistake keeps popping up over and over. They lock in a selling price, load up PPC budget, and start sending inventory, without answering one simple question: how many units do I actually need to sell just to break even?

Here’s the conversation I hear constantly:
"I can sell this for $39.99, my variable cost per unit is $15. This product should print money."

Then monthly fixed costs hit, ad spend burns, and they find themselves moving plenty of units but still losing money overall.

The two things that mess sellers up

Most profit calculators ignore proper fixed‑cost handling.
They show you per‑unit contribution margin, but do not account for recurring monthly fixed costs — base ad budgets, software subscriptions, brand marketing, overhead. A product with healthy per‑unit margin can still lose money if you cannot sell enough volume to cover those fixed expenses.

Sellers misclassify ad spend.
Performance sales‑driven ads are variable costs. Brand‑focused monthly marketing budgets are fixed costs. Mixing these two categories breaks your whole break‑even forecast. Many sellers get this wrong and set unsafe ad scaling targets.

Why I couldn't find a tool that fixed this

I tested existing spreadsheets and online break‑even calculators, and they all shared frustrating limitations:

Many are built for only one platform, either Amazon‑only or Shopify‑only.

Useful fixed‑cost inputs sit behind paywalls.

No built‑in way to separate fixed vs variable marketing spend.

Very few calculate advanced ecommerce metrics: break‑even ROAS, break‑even MER.

So I built the thing I couldn’t find, as part of the MerchCalc toolset.

 MerchCalc Break‑Even Calculator

It’s a browser‑based break‑even calculator built for cross‑channel sellers: Shopify, Amazon, TikTok Shop and more. All the math runs locally in your browser — none of your product research numbers ever get uploaded, and there’s no account to create.

Here's what it handles:
✅ Clear separation for per‑unit variable costs and monthly fixed costs
✅ Works for Shopify, Amazon FBA/FBM, TikTok Shop and other marketplaces
✅ Real‑time updates: adjust selling price or costs and watch outputs change instantly
✅ Outputs break‑even units, break‑even revenue, contribution margin & ratio
✅ Computes ecommerce‑critical metrics: break‑even ROAS and break‑even MER
✅ Built-in scenario simulation: test price increases and variable‑cost shifts side‑by‑side
✅ Runs offline in‑browser — no data ever leaves your device, no account, no paywall, 100% free.

You can try it here: https://merchcalc.com/tools/break-even-calc

The math that changed my mind about a "good" product

This example uses the exact sample numbers shown in the screenshot above:
Selling price: $39.99, Variable Cost Per Unit: $15.00, Monthly Fixed Costs: $2000, Monthly Ad Budget: $500

How most sellers quickly evaluate this product (only looking at per‑unit contribution):

Line

Amount

Selling price

$39.99

Variable Cost Per Unit

−$15.00

Contribution Margin Per Unit

$24.99

Contribution Margin Ratio

62.49%

On a per‑unit basis this looks fantastic. Many sellers will immediately ramp ads based only on this number.

Reality after adding your monthly fixed overhead and ad budget into break‑even math:

Line

Amount

Monthly Fixed Costs

$2000.00

Break‑Even Units

80 units per month

Break‑Even Monthly Revenue

$3,200.48

Break‑Even ROAS

2.67x

Break‑Even MER

8.00x

Est. Months To Profitability

3

If your monthly sales volume only hits 50 units, every individual sale has positive contribution margin, yet your business is losing money for the month. That is the trap this calculator is designed to catch.

We also added scenario simulation to test what happens when pricing or sourcing costs shift.
For this test case:

Price Change: +10%

Variable Cost Change: -10%

New break-even: 66 units / month ($2,885.57)

That’s 14 fewer units you need to sell to hit break-even.

You can plug these exact numbers into our live tool and reproduce these results yourself.

 What's next

This is a side project and I'm still iterating. I plan to add more sensitivity testing options and export functions for sellers who want to save their scenarios.

If you're an ecommerce seller (or an indie builder poking around), I'd genuinely love feedback — what's missing, what's wrong, what you'd want to see next. Bug reports welcome.

What fixed‑cost line item do you most often forget during forecasting? For me it was recurring SaaS tool subscriptions.

Also, if you sell on Amazon FBA, I built a standalone Amazon FBA profit calculator too. You can read about it here: I built a free Amazon FBA profit calculator because Amazon's own one kept lying to me.

Built as part of MerchCalc — free tools for cross‑border sellers, no login, no paywall.

MerchCalc is built for global ecommerce sellers. https://merchcalc.com is our only official website. No other websites are authorized to represent MerchCalc. We are not affiliated with MerCalc app or any third‑party aggregator, scraped or auto‑listed content sites.

I spend a lot of my time these days in Amazon FBA product research, and I talk to a lot of sellers while I'm at it. Same story keeps coming up, over and over: the product looks profitable on paper, and then the real number quietly isn't.

Here's a version of the conversation I've now had too many times:

"I priced it at $24.99, my cost is $6. There's no way I'm not making money on this."

Then the fees start talking, and the margin starts melting.

The two things that mess sellers up

1. Amazon's built‑in Revenue Calculator only pulls platform fees.
It grabs the referral fee, the FBA fulfillment fee, and storage. Fine so far.

What it does not grab: your first‑mile inbound shipping, prep cost, import tariff, return/refund losses, long‑term storage, disposal fees, and the inbound placement fee that shows up when Amazon splits your shipment across warehouses.

So every serious seller ends up re‑doing the math in a separate spreadsheet, jumping between tabs, copy‑pasting numbers, and introducing a new arithmetic error every time. That's exactly when a "great" product becomes a dud — not because the product was bad, but because the calculation was.

2. The "Other" line item.
Go look at your settlement report. Sellers regularly find charges labeled only as "Other" — removal fees, disposal fees, international freight duties all bundled into one vague bucket. Some of us have seen four‑figure "Other" deductions with no explanation attached. You can't validate what you can't break out.

There's also a quieter tax on top of all this: dimensional weight. Amazon charges fulfillment by package size, not just weight. I've seen sellers eat "shipping adjustment" fees that cost more than the product they were shipping, because the box was a few inches bigger than they'd entered.

Why I couldn't find a tool that fixed this

I tried a whole stack of third‑party Amazon profit calculators. This is the pattern I hit:

Some lock the actually‑useful cost fields behind a paywall.

Some force you to create an account before you can run a single calculation. No, thanks.

The ones that work are almost always FBA‑only — there's no way to switch to FBM when you're comparing fulfillment routes.

Almost none of them let you model refund loss and prep cost, which is exactly where margin tends to die.

So I built the thing I couldn't find, as part of the MerchCalc toolset.

 MerchCalc Amazon Profit Calculator

It's a browser‑based calculator for Amazon sellers running FBA or FBM. All the math runs locally in your browser — none of your product research numbers ever get uploaded, and there's no account to create.

Here's what it handles:

FBA / FBM switch — model both fulfillment routes on the same product instead of rebuilding everything.

First‑mile inbound shipping, prep cost, and import tariff — the landed‑cost pieces Amazon's calculator ignores.

Refund / return loss — plug in your expected return rate and watch what it actually does to profit, instead of discovering it after three months of orders.

Net profit, profit margin, ROI, break‑even selling price, and max acceptable ACoS — everything a seller needs to judge a product before committing to inventory, in one screen.

Revenue breakdown chart — see exactly where every dollar goes, instead of staring at a single "profit" number.

Built‑in profit‑level assessment — a rating like "Excellent: net margin above 15%" that tells you at a glance whether a product has healthy margins.

Runs offline, in your browser — no data ever leaves your device, no account, no paywall, 100% free.

You can try it here: https://merchcalc.com/tools/amazon-profit-calc

The math that changed my mind about a "good" product

This is a typical mid‑size category example — plug in your own numbers, but the shape of it is real.
Same product, same price: $24.99, product cost $6.00.

How most people run the numbers (selling price minus product cost, plus only the obvious platform fees):

Line

Amount

Selling price

$24.99

Product cost

−$6.00

Referral fee (~15%)

−$3.75

FBA fulfillment (under‑entered weight)

−$3.90

Net profit

$11.34

Net margin

~45%

Feels like a winner. You order inventory.

Reality, once the hidden costs actually land — the same product, with dimensional weight, prep, tariff, returns, and storage accounted for:

Line

Amount

Selling price

$24.99

Product cost

−$6.00

Referral fee

−$3.75

FBA fulfillment (dimensional weight)

−$4.80

Inbound shipping + prep + tariff

−$3.10

Return loss (5% return rate + refund admin fee)

−$1.30

Long‑term storage / disposal

−$0.90

Net profit

$5.14

Net margin

~20%

Same product. The quick version says ~45% margin; the full picture says ~20%. Neither number is wrong in isolation — the first one just didn't include everything. If you sized your PPC, pricing, and inventory on the 45% version, the 20% reality is a slow bleed you only notice months later.

That gap is the whole reason the calculator exists.

 What's next

This is a side project and I'm still iterating. Scenario simulation is on the roadmap — eventually you'll be able to test what a price change or a COGS shift does to your bottom line, without rebuilding your spreadsheet.

If you're an Amazon seller (or an indie builder poking around), I'd genuinely love feedback — what's missing, what's wrong, what you'd want to see next. Bug reports welcome.

What's the one cost you keep forgetting when you estimate Amazon product profit? I'll start: for me it was always the return rate.

Also, if you run a Shopify store, I built a Shopify profit & break‑even calculator too. You can read about it here: Shopify profit calculator article.

I built a free Shopify profit & break‑even calculator for ecommerce sellers

Hey folks,

I’ve been chatting with quite a few Shopify store owners lately, and one pain point kept popping up over and over.
A lot of sellers only look at their gross revenue and have no clear idea of their actual profit once all the hidden expenses get factored in.

Platform fees, ad spend, product costs, shipping and fulfillment all eat into your margins.
Most calculators out there are too basic. They skip many of these real‑world costs, which can easily lead sellers to make poor pricing and business decisions.

That’s why I decided to build this tool for the community.

 Meet MerchCalc

MerchCalc is a lightweight profit and break‑even calculator built specifically for ecommerce / Shopify sellers.

What it handles right now
✅ Calculate your real net profit after all your costs
✅ Work out your exact break‑even point
✅ Include Shopify transaction fees, ad spend, product cost, shipping and fulfillment
✅ No mandatory login, you can jump straight in and start calculating
✅ It works offline, so you don’t need stable internet every single time
✅ 100% free for sellers to use

If you want to try it out:
https://merchcalc.com

This is my side project, and I’m still iterating on it.
My roadmap is to roll out more practical ecommerce calculators down the line.
I’d really appreciate feedback, feature requests or bug reports from other builders and Shopify sellers here in the community.

Thanks for reading!
