Originally published on Life Around Tech Blog | This is a cross-post

I used to think 5G was just faster internet. But after 6 months working on a telecom infrastructure project, I realized 5G is completely reshaping remote network engineering and salaries. Companies are building cloud-native networks with service-based architecture, network slicing, and edge computing. They desperately need remote engineers who understand this—we're talking $100K-$150K+ salaries.

Why This Matters for Remote Network Engineers

5G isn't the future anymore. It's here. There's a massive skills gap right now. Companies are desperate for engineers who understand both traditional networking AND cloud-native architecture. If you're remote and willing to learn these skills, you're looking at $100K+ salary within 12-18 months.

Real Salary Data: Entry to Senior Level

Entry-Level (0-2 years): $75K-$110K US | $50K-$80K remote from India
Mid-Level (2-5 years): $110K-$150K US | $75K-$120K remote from India

Senior (5+ years): $150K-$200K+ US | $120K-$180K remote from India

Why the range? Cloud-native skills are the salary multiplier. Basic Linux + Python = $85K-$110K. Add Kubernetes = +$20K-$30K. Add O-RAN expertise = +$20K-$40K more.

Companies Actively Hiring Remote 5G Engineers

Top Tier: Nokia, Ericsson, Cisco, AWS, Microsoft Azure ($120K-$180K+)
Strong Opportunities: Orange, Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile, DISH Wireless ($100K-$150K)

Growth Stage: Telecom startups, cloud-native companies ($85K-$120K)

 Your 6-12 Month Roadmap

Months 1-2: Learn Linux kernel networking, Docker, and Kubernetes
Months 2-3: Get CKA and AWS Solutions Architect certifications
Months 3-4: Build a 5G core network simulation project on Kubernetes

Months 4-6: Apply to roles at Nokia, Ericsson, DISH

From Corporate to Freelance: 5 Passive Income Streams That Actually Work

I Quit My Corporate Job. Here's What Actually Pays in Freelancing

Two years ago I walked away from a stable corporate networking job. The paycheck was solid. The security was real. But something was missing.

Now? I make way more than I ever did in corporate. But here's the thing - it didn't come from freelance gigs alone. It's the passive income streams running in the background.

Let me show you what actually works.

Why Passive Income Matters for Freelancers

Freelancing is awesome but it's basically trading hours for money. Your income stops the moment you stop working. That scared me more than the job search ever did.

So I built multiple income streams. Some months one dominates. Other months it's something else. The magic? They all work together.

 1. Blog with Google AdSense (Revenue: $500-2000/month)

This is what I'm doing right now. Started my tech blog about 3 months ago.

What I Did:

Built a simple WordPress site on cheap hosting ($3/month)

Wrote about my actual work - network engineering, remote jobs, tech transitions

Optimized for long-tail keywords people actually search for

Applied for Google AdSense once I hit 10 articles

The Real Numbers:

Month 1: $12

Month 2: $87

Month 3: $423

Month 4: $1,200+

It's growing because I'm not writing generic stuff. I write about things I actually do every day.

 2. YouTube Tech Tutorials (Revenue: $200-1500/month)

I almost didn't do this. Then my first video got 40K views because I titled it right.

What Worked:

Quick 5-10 minute tutorials on networking problems

Solving real problems people search for

Consistent upload schedule (2x per week)

Not overthinking the production quality

 3. Freelance Templates on Gumroad (Revenue: $300-800/month)

I created network automation scripts and configuration templates. Sold them on Gumroad.

A template I made in 2 hours has made $2,300. They generate sales while I sleep.

 4. Dev.to Partner Program (Revenue: $150-400/month)

I'm posting on Dev.to, earning from member views. Zero extra work. Just republish blog content here.

 5. Sponsorships & Affiliates (Revenue: $400-1200/month)

Once your audience grows, companies reach out. I do sponsored content and recommend tools I actually use.

 The Realistic Timeline

Month 1-3: Basically nothing. Building phase.
Month 4-6: First checks arrive. Tiny but real.
Month 12+: Figure out your mix. Mine is AdSense (40%) + YouTube (30%) + Templates (20%) + Affiliate (10%).

 The Honest Truth

Passive income isn't actually passive. It requires:

Months of work before money arrives

Consistent updates and improvements

Being okay with streams failing

Creating when nobody's reading

Learning new skills constantly

But here's what makes it worth it: I have leverage now. I turn down bad clients. I take breaks without panicking.

 Your Move

Pick ONE income stream. Not all five. Master it.

For tech people I recommend:

Blog + AdSense (lowest barrier)

YouTube (takes time but grows exponentially)

Templates/Gumroad (fastest to first sale)

You've got the skills. You just need to package them.

Drop a comment if you're trying these. I'll help with the technical setup. 🚀

Finding the Right Remote Networking Gig in 2025

Let me be honest - two years ago I was completely burned out working on-site. Long commutes, office politics, and yeah... the whole "sitting in traffic for 2 hours" thing was killing my vibe. So I started hunting for remote networking jobs.

Fast forward to today, and I've worked with several amazing companies that actually let me do my thing from home. In this guide, I'm sharing what I've learned - the companies that actually pay well, treat remote teams right, and won't ghost you after month 2.

 Why Remote Networking Actually Works

Networking jobs used to require you to be physically present to troubleshoot infrastructure. Then COVID happened. Now? Most of it can be done from anywhere with a decent internet connection.

The real benefit though? You're not competing just with people in your city anymore. You're competing globally, but you're also getting paid based on experience and skills - not zip code.

Companies Actually Hiring Network Engineers Remotely

 1. Cisco (EMEA & US)

They've been offering remote networking roles for a while now. Starting salaries around $75k-$95k depending on experience. The downside? Their hiring process is slow. Real slow. But once you're in, the benefits are solid.

 2. IBM & Red Hat

IBM merged with Red Hat a few years back, and honestly? They've improved their remote culture. Network architects are pulling $85k-$110k. They're also good about work-life balance (mostly).

 3. Cloudflare

If you're into cloud networking and security, these guys are crushing it. They're seriously remote-first. Salaries are $90k-$130k+ depending on seniority. They hire globally too, which is clutch if you're outside the US.

 4. Fastly

Similar vibe to Cloudflare. More niche, but their remote program is legit. $88k-$115k range.

 5. DigitalOcean

Great for DevOps + networking roles. They're fully remote. Salary range $70k-$105k. Culture is pretty chill from what I've heard.

 What About Salary?

Honestly? Remote network engineer salaries in 2025:

Junior (0-2 yrs): $60k-$75k

Mid-level (2-5 yrs): $80k-$110k

Senior (5+ yrs): $110k-$160k+

But here's the catch - if you're in India or other non-US countries, the salary can be 30-40% lower. It sucks, but that's the reality. Some companies like Shopify and Stripe do try to pay market rates regardless of location though.

 Pro Tips I've Learned

1. Your GitHub matters

I can't stress this enough. If you have solid networking automation scripts (Python, Ansible, etc.) on GitHub, companies notice. I landed one gig just because my repo had a popular BGP automation tool.

2. Timing is everything

Q1 (Jan-March) companies usually have fresh budgets. Q4 they're cutting positions. Apply accordingly.

3. Network (pun intended)

LinkedIn is NOT dead. Actually posting about what you're working on gets you noticed. I've had 3 recruiter messages just from commenting on DevOps posts.

4. The interview will be technical

They'll definitely ask you to troubleshoot scenarios. Have your CCNA or equivalent fresh in your mind. Or better yet, keep learning new stuff.

 Challenges I've Faced

Timezone issues - Working with teams across 6 time zones is tough. Your standup might be at 8 AM or 10 PM.

Isolation - Remote work hits different when you're working solo from a home office. You need to build your own community.

Internet dependency - One bad ISP and you're done. I've learned to have a backup mobile hotspot always ready.

 Where to Look?

LinkedIn - Seriously, set up job alerts for "Network Engineer Remote"

GitHub Jobs - Lots of startups post here

We Work Remotely - Site dedicated to remote jobs

Stack Overflow Jobs - Tech-focused

Company careers pages - Cisco, Cloudflare, IBM all have dedicated remote sections

 Real Talk

If you're thinking about going remote as a network engineer - do it. The flexibility, the time saved on commute (which you can spend learning new tech or just chilling), and the fact that you can work from a coffee shop in Bali while earning US rates... it's worth the adjustment period.

Just make sure your home setup is solid, your internet is reliable, and you're good with async communication.

Have questions about remote networking jobs? Drop them in the comments. I'm monitoring and happy to share what I know.

Good luck out there! 🚀
