Stop Picking One AI Video Model: How I Route Shots Across Kling, Veo, Seedance, and Hailuo

I wasted a few months looking for the "best" AI video model. That question is a trap. What actually works is treating each model like a lens in a kit and routing the shot before you spend credits.

I'm Brian. I built PixelDojo because I got tired of juggling four subscriptions just to A/B the same prompt. Bias stated up front — the routing notes below are what I'd tell a friend even if I didn't run a studio.

Route by job, not by hype reel

Here's the split I use in production:

Veo — short hero clips where photorealism and native dialogue/audio matter. Close-ups, product holds with speech, anything that dies without sync sound.

Kling — people, motion, multi-shot beats. When a character has to walk, turn, or survive a cut, Kling is still the workhorse.

Seedance — longer takes and reference-heavy continuity. If you bring a face pack or product pack and need the model to stay honest across 10–20 seconds, start here.

Hailuo (MiniMax) — cheap draft lane. Block the scene, check physics and motion, then promote the winner to a flagship model.

Flux — stills and keyframes before you animate. Generate the hero frame first so the video prompt isn't guessing composition.

Runway still wins when the problem is editing after generation, not the first render. Local Comfy + open video models win when you care about reproducibility and hate per-second surprises. Different tools, different jobs.

 Failure modes I budget for

Pretty but unusable — gorgeous first frame, melted hands by second 4. Score "usable without regen," not single-frame screenshots.

Identity drift — character looks right once, then becomes a cousin. Lock references early (elements, multi-ref, or image-to-video keyframes).

Audio lottery — native sound that only works on the cherry-picked take. If dialogue is load-bearing, budget extra takes.

Host skew — "Kling on Platform A" ≠ "Kling on Platform B." Defaults, upscalers, and duration caps change the output as much as the checkpoint name.

Cost blindness — a $0.05 generation that needs eight rerolls costs more than a $0.20 one that lands on take two.

My rule of thumb: treat 5–8 seconds as the atomic unit, and assemble longer stories in a real editor.

 Disclosure

I run PixelDojo — Kling, Veo, Flux, Seedance, and Hailuo under one subscription, plus 310+ effects and Sensei as an AI director helper (AI Video Studio). If you're still learning the models, start on each vendor's free tier first; a hub earns its keep once you're comparing shots weekly.

If you have a routing rule that beats this, drop it in the comments.
