Building VidFixa: A Video Downloader Built with Go, Nuxt, PostgreSQL and Bachs

I built VidFixa as a real project to learn, experiment, and actually ship something instead of building another tutorial project that never leaves my computer.

VidFixa is a video downloader that supports Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, and LinkedIn. The idea is simple: paste a video URL, let VidFixa process it, and download the video without a watermark.

Why I built it

I wanted a project that would force me to work on more than just CRUD APIs.

I wanted to deal with things like:

• Background processing
• Concurrency in Go
• External processes
• PostgreSQL
• Authentication
• Subscription management
• Payment webhooks
• Deployment
• Error handling
• Production issues

That made a video downloader a good project for me because the download itself is only one part of the system.

The stack

The backend is built with Go and Chi.

The frontend is built with Nuxt.

For data storage, I use PostgreSQL.

Video processing uses yt dlp, with FFmpeg where needed.

For payments and subscriptions, I integrated Bachs.

The application is deployed on Render.

How the download flow works

The basic flow looks like this:

User submits a video URL.

VidFixa identifies the request and checks the user's download allowance.

The download job is then placed into the background processing system.

A worker picks up the job and runs the download process.

The resulting file is stored and made available to the user.

One of the things I wanted to avoid was tying up the HTTP request while a video was being processed.

That pushed me toward using background workers and Go's concurrency features.

Learning concurrency with Go

One of the biggest reasons I chose Go for the backend was to get more comfortable with concurrency.

VidFixa uses background workers to process download jobs instead of trying to do everything inside the request handler.

This gave me practical experience with goroutines, channels, worker pools, context cancellation, timeouts, and controlling concurrent work.

Building these features into a real application helped me understand them much better than simply reading about them.

Authentication and anonymous users

I also wanted people to be able to try VidFixa without immediately creating an account.

Anonymous users are tracked with a signed cookie, while registered users have authenticated accounts.

This created an interesting problem because the application still needs to enforce monthly download limits without requiring every visitor to register.

Subscriptions and payments

VidFixa currently has three plans:

Free: 15 downloads per month

Plus: 85 downloads per month

Pro: 200 downloads per month

The monthly limits reset automatically and unused downloads do not carry over.

Bachs handles the subscription checkout and payment processing.

The backend also listens for payment events through webhooks so subscription state can be updated from payment events rather than relying only on the frontend.

This was another part of the project that taught me how different a real payment integration is from simply adding a payment button.

Some of the problems I encountered

Getting the application running locally was only part of the work.

Deployment introduced its own problems.

At one point, the backend deployed successfully but the environment did not have yt dlp available. Since the application depends on it, downloads could not work.

I had to update the Docker setup so the required dependencies were installed during the image build.

I also had to deal with routing problems, CORS configuration, favicon deployment, webhook testing, authentication, database connections, and platform specific download behaviour.

Some problems were caused by my code.

Others were caused by the environment.

That was probably one of the most useful parts of the project because production development is not just about writing code. You also have to understand the environment your code runs in.

What I learned

The biggest lesson from VidFixa was that building a complete product forces you to understand how different parts of software fit together.

I learned more about:

• Go concurrency
• HTTP APIs
• Authentication
• PostgreSQL
• Background workers
• External processes
• Docker
• Deployment
• Payment integrations
• Webhooks
• Error handling
• Production debugging

More importantly, I learned what it feels like to take an idea from a local development environment to a publicly accessible application.

What's next

There are still things I want to improve.

I want to continue improving the download pipeline, monitoring, error handling, user experience, and overall reliability.

There is also more I want to learn around scaling background jobs and handling larger workloads.

For now, the important part is that VidFixa is live and people can actually use it.

Final thoughts

VidFixa started as a project for learning Go and backend development.

It became a much bigger learning experience once I started dealing with payments, subscriptions, background processing, deployment, and production problems.

I am still learning, but I wanted to build something real instead of waiting until I felt ready.

Why I Decided to Learn Go

Back in 2025, right after my graduation and final exams, I experienced serious anxiety about my future. For the first time, every step I took had to be careful and calculated. I have never been more strategic than I was in the last five months.

When I started with my tutor, I clearly stated that I wanted to learn React and Python. Unfortunately, he did not work with React. Instead, he taught me Vue with Node.js and Express. It was not a bad stack at all. In fact, it was solid. However, from what I observed in the tech community, especially on X, React seemed to be more valued and widely discussed than Vue.

About four months later, I had to travel back to my hometown. This period happened immediately after my graduation, which made everything feel even more intense and urgent.

By December 2025, I had to make one of the toughest decisions of my life. I spent a lot of time researching through platforms like Google, exploring discussions powered by OpenAI, and reading insights connected to xAI. I needed clarity before committing to a long term direction.

After deep research, I realized that Go was not just another programming language. It had strong niches that aligned with what I wanted to build and become.

Artificial intelligence
Blockchain and Ethereum_

That was enough clarity for me.

As of today, I have built an API service using Go, and I am just getting started. I look forward to building more scalable backend systems and strengthening my understanding of distributed systems.

This decision was intentional. And I am fully committed to mastering it.

Hey guys,it's me again,Bright Dev. greetings from wherever you're reading from, I trust yall are doing great. It has been a while since I posted here.

Well, guess what? There have been so many improvements on my side. Just on Monday here, I hosted and launched my very first website ( personal site)

though I still have some changes to make on the website, I'm sure you'll enjoy what you'll see.

I know you may ask , why launch a website when it is not fully ready?
Well, I have a few answers to that, to the reason I launched my website.

First of all, the website was launched to build a self confidence for myself and to see the result of sacrifices made for since the last 5 months.

Well, it's just to have a basic understanding of web hosting and how to get a domain.

I used https://www.namecheap.com/ to get my domain while I used https://www.asurahosting.com/.

Also, I learnt about Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and its importants to on my website. With this ssl , I was able to encrypt my website and made sure it's safe for visitors to view

Lastly, I learnt SEO (search engine optimization), though I haven't applied this on my website. But believe I'll soon. It's a gradual process.

So, with the SEO , I am able to understand its usefulness it will be my website.

It helped me to give more details about my website, thereby making it optimized by search engine.

Probably somewhere may ask, how do I make my website optimization?

Well, you need to code it , right there from your VS Code, in your html.

And we use the meta tag and its properties such as name, property, and content.

Basically, with these few details , your website can be optimized.

Hello,

My name is Onwuemeri Bright, I'm from the Southern Part of Nigeria, and I grew up in Agbor(Owa-alero). I'm a student at Delta State Polytechnic Ozoro and am currently in my 20s,

Well, I've got interest in Software Development And Forex Trading. But today I'm only writing on Software Development!!

It's great to be here, and I am looking forward to working with the online space.

Way back in 2019/2020, I had my first experience with coding. Back then, I used Notepad++ as my code editor, and I learnt a few basics of coding, like HTML and CSS. It was quite fun, but due to the reason, best known to me, I quit.

Fast forward to 2023, I took the journey again, but this time with much dedication seriousness and mostly supports from my family ( my mom and my elder brother).

So this time around, I got a new tutor with the mindset of being a Full Stack Developer and kick-starting my journey on the 7th of February, 2023. First, he introduced the subject course and everything to me, after we had to get some software applications installed (for me), so I got my Visual Studio Code, a GitHub desktop application, Stackoverflow, and others.

So far, I've good knowledge of Html while I still struggle with CSS. I'm glad I've got 35% knowledge of Html, including its characters and attributes and CSS of 10% knowledge/skill of.

PROJECTS

I'm proud to say I can work on my website frontend with the help of my tutor as always, though it hasn't been hosted yet. But yeah, it's something I'm proud of because it has only been 6 weeks since I started the journey and now I have something that could take 3 months or more to learn not to talk of building it.

Along the line, I had an idea for another project I worked on, it's a Barbershop though, I got the idea based on its where I take my shavings from and I was able to build an interface for that Barbershop.

My Journey

So far, I've learnt something about myself;
Putting God First: One can't do without the direction of Jehovah, so I make sure that I commit my daily activities to his hands.

Dedication: I made sure that I had the full mindset of what I wanted and how to achieve them.

Consistency: I've learnt to show up each day no matter how good/ bad the day is, I made sure that I can learn something new in the Coding World.

Hard work: Nothing works without hard work. I had to stay ready without getting ready!! Get the logic.

Challenges::
One of my biggest challenges here in coding is trying to remember each code line without having to look at my desktop or PC for guidance.

Overcoming::
So I did my best to always write off the head, and so far, it has been helping!! And be consistent and hardworking, there's no other way!

My Advice

Be questionable.
Pay attention to each detail.
Be eager to learn.
Don't depend fully on what your tutor is teaching you.

My mistakes;
Don't be hard on yourself.
Enjoy the process.
Avoid errors, it results in debugging and kills vibes.

My Goals

I want to be in a position where I can be a solution provided to the nation.

I want to be limitless.

And to make more money.
