Use Cases: Tire Sizes API

The general rule of thumb is that tires can last anywhere between 25,000 to 50,000 miles before they need to be replaced.1 That means that going into year 2 most car owners start thinking about getting new tires.

Tire companies that have worked with CarsXE API have increased their conversions by over 30% because they provided a quick and easy solution for their customers with the least amount of friction.

As customers look online and locally for good deals tire shops need to quickly figure out what vehicle the user is driving so they can find all the options that fit that car. The provider that offers the least friction to the customer is likely to capture that buyer.

  Here's the problem:

Most customers don't know what's the make, model, year & trim of the vehicle they drive.

  Answer:

Most customers do know their license plate number or can figure out where to find the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).

CarsXE API provides all sorts of vehicle data through its API. One of the largest use cases of the Vehicle Specifications API is tire companies that would like to access the specific tire size of a vehicle from a VIN.

Companies also use our Vehicle Plate Decoder to get the VIN from a license plate which could then be used to get the tire size.

Let's see it in action.

  Step 1

Ask the customer for a license plate number & state. (You could also use the Vehicle Plate Image Recognition to extract the license plate number from an image.)

  Step 2

Get vehicle data from the license plate. More on that here:

  Step 3

Get tire size from VIN extracted. More on that here:

GET Vehicle Specifications Using An API

        #api
        #auto
        #tutorial
        #http

  Step 4

Congrats! From a license plate, we were able to find the tire size of the vehicle attached to the plate.

This process gives the user less friction and allows them to know their tire size. As you can see we could also expand this power beyond tire sizes as the Vehicle Specifications API provides many useful nuggets of information on the vehicle.

Decoding A Vehicle License Plate With An API

If you're building an application that involves vehicles whether it's an AI solution or mobile parking application a VIN is one of the most powerful pieces of information you can attain to learn more about the vehicle and its owner.

Every vehicle on the road has a unique vehicle identification number (VIN) but that number is usually small and hidden under the windshield. Furthermore, most car owners don't know their vehicle's VIN let alone that they have one.

One thing that is visible and every vehicle owner knows about is a vehicle's license plate. The license plate, like the VIN, is unique but it changes from owner to owner.

In this tutorial we're going to use the license plate number of a vehicle to retrieve the VIN, make, model, year and a sample image of the vehicle.

  Retrieve Data Using License Plate Number

We'll use the CarsXE Plate Decoder API and it's documentation to retrieve vehicle information using the license plate number.

Let's say I'm building a mobile parking application. In the app, I require the user to give me the license plate number and state of the vehicle.

The user provides the following information:

36619HT
- Plate number

MD
- Two-character state code for Maryland

So I need to make an HTTP GET request to the API requesting this data. I love JavaScript so I'll give an example using the request package in my NodeJS server application. Here's what I need to make the request:

Get a unique CarsXE API Key (by creating an account and adding a payment method)

Make the request to the endpoint
http://api.carsxe.com/platedecoder?

Set our
plate
query to our value:
plate=36619HT

Set our
state
query to our value:
state=MD

Set our
key
query to our CarsXE API Key:
key=<CarsXE_API_Key>

Set our
format
query to either
json
or
xml
depending on how we'd like the format of the response to be.

Ok, let's make the request!

var request = require('request');

const r = "http://api.carsxe.com/platedecoder?plate=36619HT&state=MD&format=json&key=<CarsXE_API_Key>";

request(r, function (error, response, body) {
  console.log('error:', error); // Print the error if one occurred
  console.log('statusCode:', response && response.statusCode); // Print the response status code if a response was received
  console.log('body:', body); // Print the HTML for the Google homepage.
});

Ok, let's see what the response of the API looks like!

{
    "success": true,
    "vin": "4T1BF22K5WU057633",
    "imageUrl": "https://api.carsxe.com/pic?image=@VG95b3RhIENhbXJ5IENFIC8gTEUgLyBYTEU=",
    "assembly": "United States",
    "Description": "Toyota Camry CE / LE / XLE",
    "RegistrationYear": "1998",
    "CarMake": "Toyota",
    "CarModel": "Camry CE / LE / XLE",
    "BodyStyle": "Sedan 4D",
    "EngineSize": "3.0L V6 EFI"
}

Isn't that amazing! Just from knowing the plate number and state which we required the user to enter we were capable of retrieving that the vehicle the user just parked is a 1998 Toyota Camry with a 3.0L V6 EFI engine.

Even more impressive is that we were able to pull the vehicle VIN for that specific vehicle which we can use to pull the vehicle's history, specs, and market value. We can know the owner of the vehicle, whether it's stolen, whether it's been in any accidents, or there are any liens on the vehicle and more.

I hope you can benefit from this tutorial and API as much as I have!

GET Vehicle Specifications Using An API

If you ever start developing an application that involves vehicles, chances are you'd like to query the specifications or attributes of a vehicle that make it what it is. Purchasers often do this on an individual level when deciding what car they want to purchase by using a VIN decoder.

A VIN is a vehicle identification number; each vehicle has a unique VIN.

The question that remains is, how can I query such specifications in an application? This is where an API such as the CarsXE Vehicle Specifications API comes into play.

The Vehicle Specifications API provides access to a library of vehicle specifications data.

Data covered in the API includes attributes, color options, equipment details, recall information, warranties, and photos. If none of these attributes are added to the include query only attributes and selections will be returned.

There is also another component to the API which allows for a "selections" request that can be used to retrieve lists of vehicles based on their year, make, model, trim, style, or ID. The selection requests can be done using Vehicle Selections API which is different from the specifications API.

  Retrieving Data

  Using The VIN

So let's say I have a BMW 3-series but I'd like to learn more about it. I look at the truck and find that the VIN is
1NXBR32E85Z505904
. In my application, of course, I can ask the user to enter or scan the VIN.

So I need to make an HTTP GET or POST request to the API requesting this data. I love JavaScript so I'll give an example using the
request
package in my NodeJS server application. Here's what I need to make the request:

Get a unique CarsXE API Key (by creating an account and adding a payment method)

Make the request

var request = require('request');
const r = 'http://api.carsxe.com/specs?vin=1NXBR32E85Z505904&include=selections,attributes,colors&format=json&key=<CarsXE_API_Key>';
request(r, function (error, response, body) {
  console.log('error:', error); // Print the error if one occurred
  console.log('statusCode:', response && response.statusCode); // Print the response status code if a response was received
  console.log('body:', body); // Print the HTML for the Google homepage.
});

If we look at the queries passed to the string we can see we passed:

vin=1NXBR32E85Z505904

include=selections,attributes,colors

format=json

key=<CarsXE_API_Key>

You can make this request in Python or any other language. Let's see what the request will return.

{
    "input": {
        "key": "2MZ9CTLX6L8IJ89",
        "vin": "1NXBR32E85Z505904",
        "include": "selections,attributes,equipments,colors,recalls,warranties,photos"
    },
    "selections": {
        "trims": [
            {
