Free AI tools aren't comparable until you check what's being capped

"Free plan" can mean very different things. When you line up a few AI tools, the caps are measured in different units, so the free tiers look similar but aren't.

Here are some examples from the AI tools we've reviewed:

Chat assistants like Claude and Gemini limit daily messages.
Grammarly gives about 100 standard generative AI prompts a month.
Copy.ai caps at 2,000 words a month, and Rytr at 10,000 characters.
Kling uses daily credits (66 on its free plan).
Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM) limits per feature: 50 chats a day, plus 3 audio and 3 video overviews a day.

Messages, words, characters, prompts and credits don't convert into each other, so "free" tells you very little until you map the cap to your real workload.

A quick way to compare

Write down the one task you want to speed up.

Estimate how often you'd do it in a week.

Check how the free cap counts usage, and whether your task fits.

Look at what happens after the free tier ends, including the renewal price. One website builder we reviewed advertises a low entry price on a 48-month term, then renews at a much higher monthly rate.

Run two candidates on the same real task before paying for either.

Check the license too. Many free tiers don't allow commercial use, which matters if you'll publish what you make.

What's the most surprising free-tier limit you've hit?

Limits are from our review notes at AI Suggestions as of October 2026. They change often, so check the vendor's page before relying on them.
