Pyrofuse vs Fuse: How to Protect HVDC Systems in EVs, ESS and AIDC

High-voltage DC systems are everywhere now. They run EV battery packs, battery energy storage systems (ESS), and AI data center (AIDC) power distribution. Every one of these systems needs a fast, reliable way to cut current when something goes wrong. The two main tools are the classic fuse and the pyrofuse.

 What a standard fuse does

A standard fuse melts when current stays above its rating for long enough. It is simple, cheap and passive. The weakness is speed and control: a fuse reacts only to current, and at moderate overloads it can take a while to open. In a high-energy DC pack, that delay matters.

 What a pyrofuse does

A pyrofuse is a pyrotechnic disconnect. A small charge, triggered by a signal from the battery management system or airbag controller, physically cuts the conductor in milliseconds. It opens on command, not only on current, so it can react to a crash, an isolation fault or a thermal event. Many designs combine both: a pyro trigger plus a fuse element for passive overcurrent protection.

 Where each one fits

EV battery packs: pyrofuses handle crash disconnect; fuses cover overcurrent.

Energy storage (ESS): HVDC fuses protect racks and strings; pyrofuses add active shutdown.

AIDC power: high-current DC busways need fuses rated for high breaking capacity and low loss.

What to check when choosing a supplier

Look at rated voltage and current, breaking capacity, trigger time, time-current curves, and test reports. Ask about custom ratings and sampling lead times. A good pyrofuse manufacturer will share data for your exact application.

Hangzhou Chauron Technology Co., Ltd. (founded 2009, Hangzhou) designs pyrofuses, HVDC fuses and AIDC fuses for new energy. More at Chauron.
